AMD (longs) halten möchte, halte ich still.

001: Sun to use Intel chips in some servers
002: SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) - Server and software maker Sun
003: Microsystems Inc. has agreed to use chips from Intel Corp. in some of its
004: servers and for Intel to endorse Sun's Solaris operating system, a person close
005: to the deal told the AP late Sunday night.
006: An announcement is expected Monday, according to the person, who requested
007: anonymity because the deal had not been made public. Specifics of the
008: arrangement were not disclosed.
009: The companies scheduled a joint news conference with Intel Chief Executive
010: Officer Paul Otellini and Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz for Monday morning in San
011: Francisco to announce the alliance.
012: Intel's stock was trading up 10 cents at $20.92, and Sun shares rose 3 cents
013: to $5.74, both in morning trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
014: The deal marks a major design win for Intel, the world's largest computer
015: chip maker, which has been fighting to reverse plunging profits and regain
016: market share lost to archrival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
017: adoption of its servers and software products.
018: Shawn Dainas, spokesman for Sun Microsystems, declined to comment. Intel
019: spokesman Tom Beermann also declined to comment.
020: The partnership comes amid an intensifying fight for market share between
021: Intel and AMD.
022: Both companies have been slashing prices and incurring heavy expenses to
023: transition to a more advanced manufacturing technology that will allow them to
024: shrink the size of the circuitry on their chips.
025: They have also been waging an inch-by-inch battle for market share that has
026: been particularly painful for Intel, whose previous generations of chips began
027: falling out of favor for their high energy consumption.
028: Last year, Intel lost more than 5 percent of the overall computer chip
029: market to AMD, according to Mercury Research. Longtime Intel loyalist Dell Inc.
030: said it would also begin using AMD chips in its PCs and servers.
031: Some of AMD's most dramatic market-share gains have come in the high-margin
032: server and laptop markets, areas where Intel traditionally had little
033: competition.
034: However, Intel, which still commands about three quarters of the overall
035: chip market, fired back at AMD last year by unveiling a new line of chips based
036: on an upgraded design that industry observers cheered for delivering higher
037: performance while giving off less heat.
038: The competitive pressure appears to be taking its toll on AMD, which is
039: scheduled to report fourth-quarter earnings on Tuesday and has warned investors
040: that plunging processor prices would "substantially" reduce operating income for
041: the quarter.
042: AMD's focus on energy-efficiency helped the company lure away clients like
043: Sun while Intel was still overhauling its product line.
044: AMD and Sun entered into a partnership in 2003, and in recent years Sun has
045: relied exclusively on AMD to supply server chips based on the popular x86
046: microarchitecture, or design, used in many personal computers and servers.
047: Intel was also providing processors for Sun's x86 server line at the time,
048: but was pushed aside out of concerns about the chips' power consumption.
049: Under the current deal, Intel will again provide chips for Sun's x86 line,
050: though this time its Xeon processors are more powerful and boast dramatically
051: improved energy-saving features.
052: Sun, which also makes its own line of Sparc branded processors, will still
053: use AMD chips in some of its products, the person close to the deal said.
054: Sun, which is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings on Tuesday, is
055: still clawing its way back to profitability after its gutting during the dot-com
056: fallout.
057: The Santa Clara-based company has lost more than $5 billion since 2002,
058: after tech-related spending dried up and demand plummeted for high-priced
059: servers like Sun's that were snapped up during the boom but fell idle after the
060: dot-com bust.
061: Intel's endorsement of the company's Solaris operating system is also an
062: important victory for Sun, as many servers that use chips based on the x86
063: design often run on Linux or Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.
064: Rumors of a Sun-Intel partnership had circulated since Friday, when Banc of
065: America Securities analyst Sumit Dhanda wrote in a research note that Sun was
066: considering using Intel's Xeon processors for its fast-growing x86-based server
067: product lines.
068: Though Sun is a "fairly small player" in the market for x86-based servers,
069: coming in sixth in terms of market share, Dhanda said, the company's sales in
070: that market are growing rapidly.
071: Dhanda said such a partnership could allow Intel to gain as much as 50
072: percent of Sun's x86 business, which could translate into $25 million to $50
073: million in lost revenues for AMD.
074: "(W)hile the impact to Intel financials is not meaningful in the near-term,
075: we think the shift away from AMD bodes well for momentum in Intel's server
076: business over the course of the upcoming quarters," Dhanda said in the note.

"...there is a rumor coming out from the websites in China currently that AMD is planning to launch R600 on 8th or 9th March and be officially named as Radeon X2K series...
...It seems like ATi has successfully taped out a A15 silicon that is able to work at 1GHz...
...According to our sources but still a rumor revealed R600 as X2800 series. There are 2 variants for XTX; 1GB and 512MB. X2800XTX runs at 750MHz core, 2.2GHz memory, 512-bit memory interface and GDDR4..."
