TV-maker gains from leader's relentless drive

Andrew Johnson

Nov. 12, 2006 12:00 AM

An outsider might assume that Syntax-Brillian Corp. Chairman and CEO Vincent Sollitto Jr. is content with his company's position.

In the past two months, the Tempe-based maker of high-definition televisions reported its first profitable quarter in a year, announced a $26 million acquisition that will help it break into European markets, opened new production facilities in California and China, and began a marketing partnership with ESPN and ABC Sports.

"This is actually an impressive path for a company that had very little in revenues just a few years ago," said Tristan Gerra, a senior analyst with Robert W. Baird & Co. in Milwaukee who covers the company. advertisement

But Sollitto is not satisfied.

"We're definitely expanding, and it's really important," he said. "We have to get bigger faster. We're definitely getting into a major-league area here. I mean, HDTV is the hottest market going."

Sollitto said one of his key goals is for the company to reach $1 billion in revenue in 2007 or in 2008, a tall order considering the company's revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2007 was $87 million. For the company's fiscal year 2006 ending June 30, it reported revenue of $193 million.

The company is finally showing a profit after hemorrhaging money for several quarters. During the first quarter of fiscal 2007, Syntax-Brillian earned $3.8 million in net income, compared with a net loss of $658,000 a year ago.

The company reported a loss of $18.9 million for fiscal 2006.

The task will also be difficult because in the United States, Syntax-Brillian lacks the name recognition of heavy-hitter brands like Sony and Samsung.

The company's Olevia brand of liquid-crystal display TVs, the centerpiece of its product lineup, ranked 12th out of 29 brands in North America for LCD units sold during the third quarter with a 2.7 percent market share, according to data from flat-panel industry tracker DisplaySearch.

"They're just not a big enough company yet to become a household name, but they're growing, especially with sponsorship deals," said Paul Gagnon, director of North America TV market research for DisplaySearch.

Colleagues say Sollitto, 58, has the skills and the vision to reach his target. They point to Sollitto's role in steering the company through the merger that occurred last fall.

"There were times when the company was teetering on the edge of going away," said Wayne Pratt, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Syntax-Brillian. "I guess the thing that impressed me the most (was) Vinny, if he got discouraged, I never saw it. He was always calm and reassuring. I think it was because of Vinny that the team basically stayed together."

Syntax-Brillian was formed in November 2005 when Brillian Corp. acquired Syntax Groups Corp., a private company in California that was selling its Olevia brand of TVs.

Before the merger, Brillian was selling a high-end line of flat-panel TVs that cost about $8,000. Despite winning awards for its technology, the company was rapidly losing money.

Sollitto, who started his career at IBM in the early 1970s doing circuit and memory design, met James Li, the CEO of Syntax Groups, at an industry conference and immediately saw a merger opportunity.

Since then, Sollitto has worked to raise Syntax-Brillian's profile.

The company's deal with ESPN is a cornerstone of that effort.

The partnership, which lasts until March, allows the company to advertise through ESPN's print, online, radio and television platforms.

"This level of integration with ESPN is significant because it's not just tied to banner advertising or online advertising, so if you're interested in Olevia and you've seen it on ESPN, it's not unusual for the loyal ESPN fan to look for more information on ESPN.com," said Hope Frank, chief marketing officer.

The company has also taken steps to increase production capacity by forming joint ventures with equipment suppliers and opening new facilities in China and in California.

Last month, Syntax-Brillian opened a new production plant in Ontario, Calif., which will assemble its Olevia televisions for the U.S. and Canadian markets.

The company also opened a plant in Nanjing, China, last month through a joint venture with other companies to make the Olevia TVs for Asian markets.

Going forward, Sollitto said the company is focused on raising brand awareness in Europe.

The company's acquisition of Vivitar Corp., an Oxnard, Calif.-based maker of digital cameras and accessories, will help it expand into Europe quickly because Vivitar's products are already sold by major retailers there.

Syntax-Brillian's stock, which trades on the Nasdaq under the symbol BRLC, closed up five cents on Friday at $7.66 per share.

Pennant: A pennant is a small symmetrical triangle that begins wide and converges as the pattern matures (like a cone). The slope is usually neutral. Sometimes there will not be specific reaction highs and lows from which to draw the trend lines and the price action should just be contained within the converging trend lines

4. Fundamental Analysis
4.1. Number of Shares Outstanding
4.2. Liquidity
4.3. Revenues
4.4. Profits

5. General Overview

Man, this stock is hard to analyze. Analysts are seeing incredible growth here, and if they're right BRLC is trading at a huge discount.

Let's see, by parts:

- Technical analysis is very bullish, but the stock is up 300% in just 4 months or so. It may correct a chunk here.
- The increase in the number of shares outstanding is after all, normal. The big jump in the end of 2005 was because of the merger with Syntax, and the share count growth since then is the company financing itself to ramp up production, as demand is building.
- Probably the problems I see on the balance sheet is a seasonal thing. Inventories and receivables building up for the Christmas shopping season.
- Revenue and EPS growth is impressive, but even more impressive are estimates going forward

My general overview goes to this idea: wait for a pullback to get in. Probably the stock will come down to fill the gap at $6.38 or touch some of its ascending supports. I would buy then.

:look: ... es tritt wohl nicht ein ... :keks:

Global Plasma and LCD TV Sales Booming

Thursday, November 9th 2006 @ 11:15 AM PST

By Geoff Duncan
Staff Writer, Digital Trends News

Market analysis firm DisplaySearch has issued new figures on global LCD and plasma TV sales - they're both booming, but LCD sets are gaining fast.

Market analysis firm DisplaySearch has issued new reports on the global sales of plasma and LCD televisions during the third quarter of 2006. And guess what: sales are booming, even before the lucrative end-of-year holiday buying season gets into full swing.

Demand in the North American market spurred sales of plasma televisions during the third quarter of the year, with shipments rising 45 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago, and totaling some 2.3 million units. The figures also represent a 4 percent quarter-to-quarter increase in unit shipments. But all is not roses for plasma sets: despite a substantial 38 percent increase in demand from the North American market, shipments were down between 4 and 20 percent in other regions due to competition from LCD television and lower-than-expected sell-through during soccer's World Cup championships. In fact, LCD televisions outshipped plasma sets globally for the first time in the 37-inch and large category, and LCDs climed to a 41 percent market share in the 40+-inch category, and LCDs have already taken the market lead on the Chinese and Japanese markets.

"Given share losses at smaller sizes, plasma TV manufacturers are increasing their focus on larger sizes and becoming more dependent on the North American market, like microdisplay rear projection TVs, due to the North American consumer's appetite for big screen TVs," said DisplaySearch President Ross Young. "In Q3'06, North America accounted for 70% of all plasma TVs 50 inches and larger." Panasonic is still the leader among plasma makers, remaining the top manufacturer for the ninth consecutive quarter and reaching a record high unit share of 33 percent, with a revenue share of 34 percent.

LCD television shipments had a huge quarter, rising 99 percent during the third quarter of 2006, compared to the same quarter a year ago. North America also rose to 33.7 percent share of the LCD market, edging out Europe by a tenth of a percentage point as demand for new television sets for World Cup soccer matches largely failed to materialize. The LCD television market also has a new leader, with South Korea's Samsung taking the top spot for units shipped and overall revenue for the first time. Overall, 10.8 million LCD televisions were shipped during the third quarter of year, a record high, and accounting for 24 percent of the worldwide television market.

In terms of units shipped, the top five LCD television manufacturers are Samsung, Sharp, Philips, Sony, and LGE; however, in terms of revenue, Sony took the number two spot.

(kh)
