Tri-Vision licenses U.S. V-chip to Syntax-Brillian Corp.

TORONTO, Aug. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Tri-Vision International Ltd./Ltee (TSX:TVL) today announced that it has licensed its V-chip technology under United States Patent # 5,828,402 (the '402 Patent) to Syntax-Brillian Corporation, (Nachrichten) Digimedia Technology Co., Ltd., and Taiwan Kolin Company. The license covers all digital receiver products produced for sale in the United States. The license is valid through the expiration of the patent in 2016. Syntax-Brillian licensed the Company's Canadian Patent in February of this year.

In Tri-Vision's growing licensee family 28 companies have been awarded a U.S. License. Other companies which have acquired V-chip licenses for Tri-Vision's U.S. '402 Patent include: LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, Pioneer, Funai, Orion, Korat Denki, World Electric, Eastech, Erae Electronics, Seiko Epson, Shenzhen KXD, Optoma, Coretronic, Akai, Chunghwa, NEC, Humax, Viewsonic, Shinco, Lite-On and a number of major corporations, including Dell Inc., have committed to selling televisions under Tri-Vision's license.

As part of the transition to a digital television broadcast system in the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated phased-in rules to ensure that the V-chip can respond to any rating system changes in all digital television receiver products by March 1, 2007. Tri-Vision's open V-chip (also known as V-chip 2.0) is the only known patented technology capable of accepting modified or new rating systems. The FCC ruling took effect on March 15, 2006.

Olevia Debuts a New Family of LCD TVs

It looks like 7 might be a very lucky number for anyone looking to buy an HDTV soon. Syntax-Brillian has announced its new Olevia 7 Series line of affordable high-def LCDs.

Three products round out the new line: the 42-inch Olevia 742i and the 47-inch Olevia 747i LCDs and the 65-inch 565H LCoS.

Any of them would make a great addition to your home theater, with HD native resolutions of 1920 x 1090 and a speedy 8ms response time for fast-action viewing (4ms for the LCoS). All sets also boast a SiliconOptix Realta Hollywood Quality Video processor powered by Teranex technology with an ATI Xilleon RF front end. It all sounds impressive to me!

However, the most striking feature in the 7 Series are the prices per unit. You might have to call an installer to get one; however, each model will also be available at a few select retailers starting next month. -- Rachel Cericola

Taiwan-based Kolin and US-based Syntax-Brillian, the collaborators behind the success of the Olevia-brand LCD TVs in the US, are gearing up efforts to develop the China market, with the brand already ranked number five in the 27-inch segment in China, according to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN). While teaming up with major retail chains in China, such as Gome and Yongle, the two companies have set up a joint venture in Hong Kong, and the new firm will establish branch offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing, with the aim of selling 150,000-200,000 LCD TVs during the high season, between October and March, in China, the paper said.

(go)

Taiwan market: Kolin overtakes Sony in LCD TV sales in August

Max Wang, Taipei; Emily Chuang, DigiTimes.com [Monday 18 September 2006]

Taiwan-based Kolin was the number one LCD TV vendor during last month in the Taiwan market, according to market sources. The company shipped more than 4,000 LCD TVs last month, thanks to its two new low-cost 32-inch LCD TVs which were priced at NT$29,000 (US$880), the sources indicated.

Sony overtook Panasonic to be the top vendor in Taiwan\\\'s LCD TV market in July with a sale volume of 5,400 units, ahead of Panasonic\\\'s 5,000 units, sources said at the middle of August. However, due to a tight supply of its Bravia lineup, Sony lost its top position to become the number four vendor in Taiwan in August, the sources pointed out.

Trailing after Kolin, Chimei (the brand name of Chi Mei) and Panasonic took second and third place, respectively, in terms of sales volume during August, noted the sources.

Other Taiwan-based home appliance makers such as Tatung, Sampo, Teco Electronic & Machinery, recently cut prices to boost sales in the local market. Teco cut the price for one of its 32-inch LCD TVs to below NT$30,000, down from NT$32,000-33,000, said the sources. Tatung is now offering 37-inch LCD TVs at less than NT$40,000, the lowest level among local home appliance makers, according to the Chinese-language Apple Daily.

The sources also estimated that LCD TV shipments in Taiwan will grow 20-30% sequentially in October.

In related news, to better compete with LCD TVs in the local market, Panasonic Taiwan recently decreased the price for one of its 42-inch PDP (plasma display panel) TV (TH-42PM50T) to NT$69,900, a reduction of 14.3%, according to a recent report from the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN).
