Starz Entertainment to Increase HD Program Distribution With Motorola Encoding Technology and Advanced Modulation
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola (Nachrichten/Aktienkurs) announced today that Starz Entertainment will utilize a Motorola four-channel, high-definition (HD) MPEG encoding system for the upcoming launch of its new HD channels -- Starz Comedy, Starz Edge and Starz Kids&Family. The technology, offered by Motorola's Home and Networks Mobility Group, compresses, encrypts, and modulates the HD signals within a single integrated transmission system.
The new HD system is configured for STARZ using Motorola's Modular Uplink System which will support Starz's planned future migration to MPEG-4 compression technology. Motorola's MPEG-4 AVC technology has been optimized for today's content requirements, handling both 1920 x 1080I and 1280 x 720P resolutions at approximately half the bandwidth required with similar MPEG-2 coded signals.
A key component of the enhanced content delivery chain is Motorola's new DSR4410MD multi-program demodulator/decryptor. The new 1 RU product receives DVB-S2 modulated signals and decrypts up to 64 services from a single MPEG-2 transport stream. Testing with STARZ signals has shown reliable transmission at 77.5 Mbps using a 36 MHz, C-Band transponder -- which translates into four- to-five MPEG-2 HD streams or as many as 10 MPEG-4/AVC HD streams.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge James Peck dismissed four counts of the complaint by Iridium's Committee of Unsecured Creditors, which sued Motorola on behalf of the Iridium estate to recover billions of dollars from the mobile phone maker.
The four counts were dismissed as they depended upon a showing Iridium was insolvent or had unreasonably small capital during the four-year period before its bankruptcy, according to the 114-page ruling.
The creditor committee had not "carried its burden of proof in establishing that," Peck wrote.
Motorola established that "when it came to valuation, market participants had not been misled about the expected performance of the Iridium system and were reasonably well versed regarding its capabilities," Peck wrote. "The capital markets synthesized and distilled what all the smart people of the era knew or believed to be true about Iridium."
Iridium was the pioneer of satellite-based mobile phone services, which allowed users to communicate anywhere in the world via a satellite connection. The company was formed in 1992 and began launching satellites for its service in 1997.
But the company was forced to file for bankruptcy protection in 1999 after it failed to attract customers willing to pay as much as $7 a minute to make phone calls with bulky Iridium phones.
"The fact that Iridium failed in such a spectacular fashion stands out as a disturbing counterpoint to the market's optimistic predictions of present and future value for Iridium, but in the end, the market evidence could not be denied," Peck wrote.
Peck set a hearing for September 12 regarding the remaining four claims in the case.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A New York court has ruled against creditors of once-bankrupt satellite system Iridium (Charts) and in favor of Motorola Inc. (Charts, Fortune 500) in a lawsuit that could have meant billions in damages due to Iridium's "huge and embarrassing failure" in 1999.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge James M. Peck said Friday that even though the capital markets turned out to be "terribly wrong" about Iridium's hopes of huge profits from satellite telecommunications, the start-up's ability to raise money in the market means it was not "insolvent" during a critical period.

The ruling lets Motorola off the hook in a lawsuit where Iridium's creditors were trying to force it to return $3.7 billion it was paid to build Iridium's 66-satellite constellation.
Iridium's satellites were supposed to carry telecommunications traffic for well-heeled business users, according to market research and Wall Street believers.
Nine months after Iridium's satellite system was activated in November 1998, the company was in bankruptcy.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A New York court has ruled against creditors of once-bankrupt satellite system Iridium (Charts) and in favor of Motorola Inc. (Charts, Fortune 500) in a lawsuit that could have meant billions in damages due to Iridium's "huge and embarrassing failure" in 1999.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge James M. Peck said Friday that even though the capital markets turned out to be "terribly wrong" about Iridium's hopes of huge profits from satellite telecommunications, the start-up's ability to raise money in the market means it was not "insolvent" during a critical period.

The ruling lets Motorola off the hook in a lawsuit where Iridium's creditors were trying to force it to return $3.7 billion it was paid to build Iridium's 66-satellite constellation.
Iridium's satellites were supposed to carry telecommunications traffic for well-heeled business users, according to market research and Wall Street believers.
Nine months after Iridium's satellite system was activated in November 1998, the company was in bankruptcy.
