Epigenomics (ECX GR / Buy / TP EUR 5.00) Q3 results, guidance unchanged, product update
· On November 18th, Epigenomics reported Q3 2015 results as summarized below and held an earnings call. The positive revenue development was in large part attributable to growing sales in China, where the colorectal cancer blood test is being marketed by BioChain and was included in screening guidelines in July. The company reiterated FY 2015 guidance as issued in the context of the recent FDA response letter with respect to its Epi proColon colorectal cancer blood test: management continues to expect an operating loss of at least EUR10m to EUR11m and cash use of at least EUR9.5m to EUR10.5m in FY 2015. The company estimates its cash reach to H2 2016, but intends to raise additional capital as a bridge to expected future cash flow generation by Epi proColon in the US.
· With respect to Epi proColon, the company is in discussions with the FDA on potential next steps to make the test approvable in the US. Management expects to conduct a new study to demonstrate a compliance benefit for its blood test relative to alternative colorectal cancer screening methods such as stool tests in the real world. The potential design of such a study is under discussion with the FDA. While it is not possible to estimate timelines prior to the finalization of the study design, management noted that an assumption of a timeframe of less than 6-9 months was probably unrealistic.
· Positive preliminary data on a blood-based version of the lung cancer test Epi proLung were presented at the congress of the Association of Molecular Pathologists in Austin, Texas. Management intends to use the EUR2.8m EU grant to develop the test with a view to obtaining the CE mark that is the basis for commercialization in Europe, and is contemplating conducting a US study funded out of Epi proColon cash flows following FDA approval of the colorectal cancer blood test.
· Financials as well as the comments on Epi proColon timelines in the US are in line with our expectations. We are impressed with progress in China, but note that FDA approval of Epi proColon in the US remains central to our forecasts and investment thesis. Further development of a blood-based Epi proLung test represents upside to our forecasts.
· Conclusion: We view the earnings release and management commentary in the earnings call as incrementally positive, with progress in China and with Epi proLung as highlights. However, we expect prospects for FDA approval of Epi proColon to remain the primary share price driver and expect the company to update the market once the design of the planned new study has been finalized.
