LONDON, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Shares in German generic drugmaker
Stada (STAGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) rose as much as 4.9
percent on Monday on market talk of bid interest from U.S. group
Wyeth (WYE.N: Quote, Profile, Research), traders said. By 1410 GMT,
shares in Stada were up 3.2 percent at 46.72 euros, topping gainers
in the German midcap index (.MDAXI: Quote, Profile, Research),
which was down 0.6 percent.
A Stada spokesman said the company never commented on market
rumours, while Wyeth officials were not immediately available.
Stada has often been tipped as a takeover target in a consolidating
generic drugs sector, although the group has so far refused to
consider selling outl.
In the past, interest has been rumoured from major generic drugs
players like Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (TEVA.O:
Quote, Profile, Research), Swiss-based Novartis (NOVN.VX: Quote,
Profile, Research) or Iceland's Actavis.
Analysts were surprised at the suggestion of a bid from Wyeth,
which does not currently have a generics business, although it does
sell over-the-counter medicines.
"I can't see why Wyeth would want to do it," Frances Cloud of
Nomura Code Securities said.
More than 588,000 shares were traded in Stada compared with average
full-day volume of 550,000 shares traded over the past 30 days.
