Scotiabank in talks to acquire stake in Chilean bank13th August 2007
      By Julia Chan
According to Bloomberg, Toronto-based Bank of Nova Scotia, also known as Scotiabank, has confirmed that it is currently in exclusive talks with Inversiones Norte Sur, a key shareholder in Chile's Banco del Desarrollo, over its stake in the Chilean bank.
Media releases stated that the Canadian bank revealed in a statement that discussions were continuing with Inversiones Norte Sur, which, according to Reuters, holds a 39.4% stake in the Chilean bank, making it the principal shareholder.

AdvertisementBloomberg reported that the Canadian finance group was seeking to expand in countries such as Chile, where it currently has 56 branches and 115 ATMs in operation. Citing Diario Financiero as a source, Bloomberg also reported that Scotiabank may launch a bid as much as $1.08 billion to buy 100% of Banco del Desarrollo.

If the transaction is successful, Scotiabank will reportedly increase its Chilean market share to 6.5% from 2.5%.

Bank of Nova Scotia "sector perform," target price reduced

      Wednesday, August 01, 2007 4:49:39 PM ET
      RBC Capital Markets

NEW YORK, August 1 (newratings.com) - Analysts at RBC Capital Markets reiterate their "sector perform" rating on The Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS.NYS), while reducing their estimates for the company. The 12-month target price has been reduced from C$57 to C$54.

In a research note published this morning, the analysts mention that the wholesale and wealth management divisions of Canadian banks face the risk of continued sluggishness in the capital markets. Domestic retail operations make the lowest contribution to The Bank of Nova Scotia’s earnings mix among its peers, the analysts say. The company’s international division is exposed to the negative impact of the increased risk aversion on the valuation of emerging market assets, RBC Capital Markets adds. The EPS estimates for 2007 and 2008 have been reduced from C$4.04 to C$3.99 and from C$4.32 to C$4.22, respectively.

Scotiabank Gets Good Returns From Mexico Business
Posted on Jul 31st, 2007 with stocks: BNS

FP Trading Desk submits: Solid second quarter results from Bank of Nova Scotia’s (BNS) Mexican banking business showed net earnings rose 15% on a quarterly basis to $994-million pesos.

Blackmont Capital analyst Brad Smith thinks this should more than offset the 5% quarterly gain for the Canadian dollar as reflected in Scotiabank’s third quarter results.

He continues to rate BNS a “buy” with a C$61 price target, representing upside of more than 20%.

Scotiabank closes deal to buy 25 per cent of Thailand's Thanachart Bank
      Wed Jul 18, 10:26 PM

TORONTO (CP) - Bank of Nova Scotia (TSX:BNS) says it has closed the deal to buy a minority investment in Thailand's Thanachart Bank, further expanding its operations in the Asia-Pacific.

Scotiabank is paying about C$225 million for about 25 per cent of Thanachart Bank, Thailand's eighth-largest lender and a leading auto loan specialist.

Toronto-based Scotiabank said Wednesday it has received all the necessary regulatory approvals in Canada and Thailand to close the deal.

Thanachart has about C$9.1 billion in assets and 6,000 employees. It has 142 branches and 260 banking machines across the Southeast Asian country. The bank has 24 per cent of the auto lending market in the country, with 500,000 outstanding loans.

Officials at Scotiabank, which has been operating in Thailand for 26 years, said at the time of the purchase in March that it is attracted by Thailand's low bank concentration, compared with other Asian countries, young demographics, rapid rate of economic growth of four to five per cent, and an expanding middle-class.

"For more than a century, Scotiabank has recognized that unique opportunities for growth can be found beyond Canada's borders," Rob Pitfield, executive vice president, international banking for Scotiabank said in a release Wednesday. "This partnership with Thanachart builds on our solid track record of strategic investments in high potential markets like Thailand."

The transaction gives Scotiabank representation on the Thanachart board of directors and in its management.

Scotiabank's agreement also gives it the option to increase its ownership stake to 49 per cent for an equivalent price by the end of the year.

The option subject to a one-year extension and further call rights for a four-year period.

"A good business plan is a powerful tool whether you're applying for
financing, creating a management roadmap, or communicating your goals to
business partners or employees," continues McNamara. "It should be no more
than 10 pages in length, and will consist of two main sections. The first half
of the plan outlines the structure of the company, the product or service, the
sales and marketing strategy, and the marketplace the business operates
within. The second half is the financial plan that will allow you, your
stakeholders and advisors to assess if the numbers accurately reflect the
business you've described in the first half."
