Möchte auf diesen interessanten Wert aufmerksam machen. Im 2. Halbjahr werden
      hier einige bahnbrechende Nachrichten erwartet:

      - Phase 3 Ergebnisse zu Qnexa (Fettleibigkeit)
      - Phase 3 Zwischenergebnisse Avanafil (Erectile Dysfunction)
      - Phase 2 Ergebnissse Qnexa (Typ-2 Diabetes)

The second product Estradiol MDTS, is a low dose estrogen only treatment for the symptoms of menopause. Acrux completed Phase 1 and 2 studies. The pivotal Phase 3 clinical trial for this New Drug Application (NDA) was discussed with the FDA during the End-of-Phase 2 Meeting. It will be a three-month efficacy study to demonstrate reduction of hot flushes in menopausal women.

      Vivus: Still Undervalued
      May 12, 2009

Vivus (VVUS) announced first quarter results and held a conference call, on which, uncharacteristically, there was only one question. Essentially, the story has not changed, which is good:

Top-line data from the pivotal Phase III EQUIP and CONQUER trials is expected in 3Q09
The first Phase III avanafil data is expected in 4Q09
The Qnexa for obesity NDA is still expected to be submitted "late 2009"
Cash is $165 million and expected to be at $100 million by year-end.

I have updated my complete EV/DCF valuation and currently it looks like this:

Qnexa for obesity, today's expected value: $4.38 per share
Qnexa for diabetes, today's expected value: $7.24 per share
Avanafil for ED, today's expected value: $1.94 per share

This is now assuming only a 50% chance that Qnexa for diabetes reaches the market, since management sounded a little more nebulous about the prospects for this indication.

Total: $13.56 per share, compared to VVUS recent closing price of $4.45 per share. Sounds like a buy to me.

Luramist ist auch noch in der Pipeline. Nach der Phase 2 wurde die
Entwicklung gestoppt.

      The Market
According to the American Urological Association, 40 million women (usually postmenopause) in the U.S. suffer from some form of sexual dysfunction. Some studies suggest that treatment with testosterone improves libido in these women.

      The Product
VIVUS acquired the exclusive U.S. rights to develop and commercialize testosterone Metered Dose Transdermal Spray (MDTS®), an investigational spray delivery system of testosterone for treatment of low sexual desire in women, also known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). Luramist™ is a small, easy-to-use, hand-held transdermal spray containing testosterone
and proprietary skin penetration enhancers. Phase 2 studies evaluating Luramist showed a statistically significant improvement (twice as many as in the placebo group) in the number of satisfying sexual events in pre-menopausal patients with HSDD.

      Status
VIVUS’ partner, Australian based Acrux, has conducted two phase 1 clinical studies to evaluate the pharmacokinetic profile of Luramist and determine the optimal physiologic replacement doses. These studies demonstrated that the MDTS system could provide sustained delivery of testosterone over a 24-hour period and restore physiologic blood levels to the mid-to high normal range in women with low testosterone. Phase 2 results for Luramist showed a statistically significant improvement (twice as many as in the placebo group) in the number of satisfying sexual events in pre-menopausal patients with HSDD. We have agreed to the design of a pivotal program with the FDA. We are advancing the development of Luramist and concurrently seeking a partner for this product.

      Hallo zusammen,

Vivus Falls After Cowen Note on Drug’s Side Effects (Update1)
      2009-10-27 17:57:33.578 GMT

(Adds analyst comments in 11th and 14th paragraphs.)

      By Elizabeth Lopatto
Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Vivus Inc. fell the most in two
months in Nasdaq Stock Market trading after a Cowen & Co.
analyst said the company’s experimental obesity drug had
side effects that may restrict its use and regulatory
      approval.
Shares of Mountain View, California-based Vivus fell
      $1.19, or 12 percent, to $8.61 at 1:40 p.m. New York time,
after sinking as much as 16 percent, the biggest intra-day
slide since Aug. 3. Shares of rival weight-loss drug
developers, Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Orexigen
      Therapeutics Inc. also fell.
Data presented Oct. 24 at the meeting of the Obesity
Society in Washington showed that in two studies the higher
of two doses of Vivus’s weight-loss pill, Qnexa, caused
patients to drop out of the trial because of cognitive
symptoms such as memory loss and attention disturbance,
said Ian Sanderson, an analyst from Cowen & Co. in a note
today to investors. About 2 percent of patients stopped
treatment at that dosage in two late-stage trials, due to
the side effects, compared with less than 1 percent of
      patients taking a dummy pill.
“Our clinical consultants believe Qnexa’s safety and
tolerability profiles will prove to be regulatory and
market issues,” Sanderson wrote in the note. If the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration approves Qnexa, the pill will
probably be closely monitored, Sanderson wrote.
A call to Vivus wasn’t immediately returned.

Vivus Obesity Drug Also Helps Sleeping Disorder: Study

Biotech firm Vivus Inc. (VVUS) said Thursday a clinical study has shown its obesity drug Qnexa helps treat sleep apnea by improving weight loss.

Vivus said subjects who took Qnexa had a 69% reduction in sleep apnea events. They also lost more weight than those who took a placebo, experienced lower blood pressure and higher oxygen levels during sleep.

Sleep apnea is a condition in which people struggle to breathe or stop breathing while they sleep.

Vivus asked the Food and Drug Administration to approve Qnexa as a treatment for obesity in late 2009, and additional approvals are sure to boost sales.

Vivus shares plunge in premarket trading after FDA panel recommends against weight loss drug

Story Tools NEW YORK (AP) - Shares of Vivus Inc. plunged more than 50 percent in premarket trading Friday after a Food and Drug Administration panel recommended against approving the company's potential weight loss drug Qnexa, citing safety concerns.

The panel of experts voted 10-6 against the drug, citing potential risks from long-term use. The FDA normally follows the recommendation of its experts, though it is not required.

Shares of Vivus fell $6.42, or 53 percent, to $5.69 in premarket trading. The stock closed at $12.11 on Thursday.

The blow comes as competitors in the weight loss drug market gear up for their own FDA panel meetings this year. Wall Street has been following the development of Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s Lorcaserin and Orexigen Therapeutics Inc.'s Contrave to determine which will be the strongest potential competitor.

Vivus' Qnexa has been lauded by Wall Street as showing the best results out of the three, but side effects have been an issue. In a briefing document, the FDA cited concerns over rates of depression, memory and concentration lapses, and heart-related issues, among others.

The FDA is scheduled to make a decision on Qnexa before Oct. 28.

Meanwhile, the FDA is set to review Arena's Lorcaserin in September, while Orexigen's Contrave will be the subject of a December panel hearing.

Shares of Arena rose 59 cents, or 15 percent, to $4.51 in premarket trading while Orexigen shares remained stable.

FDA Panel Vote Against Vivus Brings More Obesity Drug Questions
      Vivus (MM) (NASDAQ:VVUS)
      Intraday Stock Chart
      Today : Saturday 17 July 2010
A Food and Drug Administration panel review of Vivus Inc.'s (VVUS) experimental weight-loss drug Qnexa was expected to bring clarity to the approvability of the latest crop of obesity drugs, but instead it only has raised more questions.

The rejection, by a vote of 10 to 6, by the panel of outside experts was largely driven by the lack of long-term safety data on a drug that could be used by millions of Americans for an indefinite period.

That panel's concerns, especially about the lack of long-term data, seemed to differ from FDA's assessment of the drug, as represented in briefing documents before the meeting. It is unclear if the panel's worries are specific to Qnexa or if they represent a general nervousness about obesity drugs in general.

The obesity drugs under review by the agency, including Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s (ARNA) lorcaserin and Orexigen Therapeutics Inc.'s (OREX) Contrave, all work by affecting the patient's central nervous system to quell appetite. Although the need is high, the area has been plagued with multiple disappointments, tough regulators and lackluster sales. No new treatments have been approved since 1999 in the U.S.

If the panel's issues were about Qnexa, then the other drugs, and even Vivus, may have a shot at swaying the FDA with data and post-marketing plans to mitigate any risks. But if the concerns are about obesity treatments in general, which could be taken for a long time by many patients that have no other major health issues, then all the drugs may have major hurdles.

Vivus will work with the FDA and remains confident in the approvability of Qnexa, which will have two-year data by the end of September, but the path is unclear without feedback from the FDA itself.

Qnexa is a combination of the stimulant phentermine, which cuts appetite, and topiramate, which increases the sense of feeling full. Both drugs have been on the market for years. Notably, Vivus' studies of the drug were done under a special protocol assessment, an agreement with the FDA on study design that meets regulatory requirements for a new drug application.

The FDA's briefing documents said "both drugs have reasonably well-established safety profiles because of their widespread use." Overall, the briefing documents were widely viewed as benign, raising known questions about safety, including neurologic and psychiatric effects, cardiovascular impact, and the potential for the drug to cause birth defects.

The agency said in the documents that the side effects "were not unexpected based on the known safety profiles of phentermine and topiramate."

Given the tone of the documents and even the discussion of the panel, the vote surprised many observers, including FDA officials who spoke to the media afterward.

After listening to the entire panel discussions, John Fraunces, managing partner at Synaptic Capital Group, believes the panel wants to approve new obesity drugs. But the totality of the side effects paired with the need for longer data were too great for the voters to overcome, he said. Fraunces owns shares of Orexigen and Arena.

Although the FDA is free to approve the drug, it is rare for it to go against a panel recommendation. Needham & Co. analyst Alan Carr said it would be a challenge for the agency to approve Qnexa without committee support, especially with the recent focus on safety.

Safety was in the spotlight this week as the same panel reviewed GlaxoSmithKline PLC's (GSK, GSK.LN) diabetes drug Avandia to determine if it should be pulled from the market. Many have speculated that the Avandia review made the Vivus panel concentrate on side effects rather than Qnexa's effectiveness in weight loss.

Canaccord Adams analyst Adam Cutler believes the panel had Qnexa-specific concerns and worries that the drug would be used by a wider population beyond any label restrictions.

That is certainly an issue that could impact Arena and Orexigen as they face their own reviews, although Cutler believes that those companies may have a better chance at passing the panel's scrutiny.

Lorcaserin has a relatively clean safety profile, and Arena's clinical trials were closely monitored for heart problems because the drug's mechanism is similar to fenfluramine, which was pulled from the market in 1997 as part of the notorious fen-phen combination. One of its large two-year studies was published in the New England Journal of Medicine this week.

Meanwhile Orexigen's Contrave will face the FDA panel review last, in December, and that time may allow it to better prepare for the meeting. The drug is viewed as having fewer side effects issues, but is also a combination drug that can draw on the long-term data of its components.

Regardless of the positives of these drugs, they have numerous issues and FDA panels are notoriously unpredictable. Furthermore, many observers believed that Qnexa had a strong and thorough case for approval right up until Thursday's vote.

      Medizin FDA-Gutachter gegen Abmagerungsmittel Qnexa

Positive Results From Avanafil Phase 3 Study in Diabetics Presented at the 47th EASD Annual Meeting

      13 Sep 2011

Diabetic Patients Treated with Avanafil Experience Significant Improvement in Erectile Function [/b]

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, USA | September 13, 2011 | VIVUS, Inc. (NASDAQ:VVUS - News) today presented positive results from the avanafil phase 3 study in diabetics. In the REVIVE-Diabetes study (TA-302), male diabetics receiving avanafil had significant improvement in erectile function. Dr. Irwin Goldstein, Director of Sexual Medicine at Alvarado Hospital, San Diego, CA, presented the results of the study during the poster session at the 47th European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal. Results of the study have been previously reported, but this was the first public European presentation of avanafil safety and efficacy data in diabetic patients.

The study included 390 patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes treated over 12 weeks with avanafil 100mg, 200mg, or placebo. Diabetics are disproportionately affected by erectile dysfunction (ED), which can worsen with increased duration of disease, and these patients are often considered less responsive to therapy.

This study population consisted of men with an average age of 58 years and a mean duration of diabetes of eleven years and ED of five to six years. The majority were type 2 diabetics, with approximately 10% having type 1 diabetes. Avanafil was associated with significant improvements in erectile function relative to placebo (calculated as least-squares (LS) mean change from baseline for all of the co-primary endpoints (P< 0.0001)). Subgroup analyses demonstrated that improvements in the percentage of successful intercourse attempts with avanafil 100 mg and avanafil 200 mg were observed regardless of diabetes classification (type 1 or 2), duration of diabetes, or baseline ED severity (P<0.05). Successful intercourse was achieved in some subjects in 15 minutes or less after dosing with avanafil. Some subjects had successful intercourse more than six 6 hours after dosing. The most common adverse events in the avanafil treatment groups were headache, nasopharyngitis, flushing, and sinus congestion.

A copy of the poster titled, "Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction in Men With Diabetes: Results of a Phase 3, Multicentre, Randomized, Controlled Trial of Avanafil" is available on our website at www.vivus.com.

UPDATE 2-Vivus obesity drug may get broader label

      Mon Jan 9, 2012 9:06am EST

      * FDa asks co to remove contraindication for women of child-bearing potential

      * Drug to remain contraindicated for pregnant women

      * Shares up 18 pct in premarket trade (Adds details, background, share movement)

Jan 9 (Reuters) - Vivus Inc said the U.S. health regulator asked the company to remove a contraindication in the proposed label of its obesity drug Qnexa, a move that could help it reach a broader patient population.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked Vivus to remove the Qnexa contraindication for women of child-bearing potential.

A contraindication means the drug should not be used in specific diseases or patient classes due to potential risks.

However, Qnexa will remain contraindicated for women who are pregnant.

The company is currently revising its proposed risk evaluation and mitigation strategy based on the change in the contraindication and plans to discuss details during an upcoming panel meeting.

Qnexa contains topiramate, which is used to treat migraine and epilepsy, and last month, data from a trial showed topiramate posed risks for pregnant women.

Vivus, which has faced multiple regulatory hurdles on Qnexa, had resubmitted a marketing application for the drug with a narrower indication that excludes women of childbearing potential, in October, a year after regulators rejected it and sought data to prove Qnexa did not increase heart risks.

Obesity, a leading cause of diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems, has reached epidemic proportions in the United States with nearly a third of the population falling into the category.

Obesity drug developers Arena Pharmaceuticals, Orexigen Therapeutics and Vivus have hit several roadblocks in recent times as the FDA has set a high bar for treatments that are likely to be taken by a large number of people.

While Arena's lorcaserin has been connected to possible cancer risks, Orexigen's Contrave was sent back on heart safety concerns.

REVIVE Trial Results for Avanafil Published in JSM Demonstrate Significant Improvement in Erectile Function

      17 Jan 2012

Results indicate low side effect rates with intercourse success reported by up to 71% of patients within 15 minutes of dosing

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, USA I January 17, 2012 I VIVUS, Inc. (NASDAQ: VVUS - News) today announced that results from the REVIVE study were published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine (JSM), a peer-reviewed journal with broad, multidisciplinary readership. REVIVE (TA-301) was a randomized, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study evaluating the safety and efficacy of avanafil, an investigational drug currently under review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). In addition to significant improvements in erectile function and low rates of side effects common to phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, the study also found that patients who attempted intercourse within 15 minutes of dosing were successful 64%, 67% and 71% of the time with 50, 100 and 200mg of avanafil treatment, respectively, versus 27% for placebo (p < 0.0001). The data suggest that avanafil may provide a rapid-onset, well-tolerated and effective treatment option for erectile dysfunction.

"While PDE-5 inhibitors are currently used as first-line therapy for treatment of ED in the general population, what's new and novel about avanafil is that it has a fast onset of action and high selectivity," said lead Investigator Irwin Goldstein, MD, Director of San Diego Sexual Medicine at Alvarado Hospital. "For patients, this means that avanafil, if approved, could be taken on-demand with potentially fewer side effects."

An overview of the results as published in JSM is as follows:

Following 12 weeks of treatment, without restrictions on food or alcohol, all three doses of avanafil (50mg, 100mg and 200mg) were significantly superior to placebo for all primary endpoints (p </= 0.001).
A secondary analysis using Sexual Encounter Profile, question 3 (SEP 3) to evaluate the number of successful intercourse attempts at various time points post-dosing revealed that avanafil was associated with a significant treatment response as early as 15 minutes and beyond 6 hours after dosing.
Nearly 80% of all sexual attempts among patients in the 200mg dose group of avanafil had erections sufficient for intercourse.
72% of study participants had tried at least one other ED treatment.
The most common side effects were headache, flushing, nasal congestion and back pain and no drug-related serious adverse events reported.
The completion rate in REVIVE was 85.1% and discontinuations due to adverse events were 1.9%, 3.1%, 2.5% and 3.1% for the 50mg, 100mg, 200mg and placebo groups, respectively.

      About the REVIVE Study

REVIVE (TA-301) was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study of avanafil in 646 men in the general population with a history of ED for at least six months; 72% of study participants had tried at least one other ED treatment. Patients underwent a four-week, non-treatment run-in period followed by 12 weeks of treatment with one of three doses of avanafil: 50mg, 100 mg and 200mg or placebo. Patients were instructed to attempt sexual intercourse 30 minutes after taking avanafil, with no restrictions on food or alcohol consumption. The primary endpoints of the study were improvement in erectile function as measured by the Sexual Encounter Profile (SEP) and improvements in the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score; secondary endpoints included patient satisfaction with erections and with sexual experience. The phase 3 study was conducted under a Special Protocol Assessment with the U.S. FDA.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Shares of VIVUS(VVUS_) doubled after Wednesday's closing bell as investors reacted to positive news about Qnexa, the company's proposed treatment for obesity in adults.

The stock was last quoted at $21.12, up 100%, on volume of 2.6 million, according to Nasdaq.com.

VIVUS said the committee voted 20-to-2 in favor of making the recommendation for approval based on a "favorable benefit-risk profile."

The company noted that the recommendation doesn't guarantee the drug will receive approval from the FDA. Rather the guidance will be considered when the FDA reviews the company's new drug application for Qnexa, which was submitted in October 2011. A previous bid for approval of Qnexa failed because of health safety concerns.

Even before Wednesday's news, VIVUS shares were on a roll, rising nearly 40% in the past year based on the regular-session close at $10.55, and hitting a 52-week high of $13.18 on Feb. 7. Wall Street had a bearish lean on the company ahead of the report with eight of the 14 analysts covering the stock at hold (6) or sell (2), although the median 12-month price target sits at $14

      http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phentermin

      FDA Advisers Bless Weight-Loss Pill

      By JENNIFER CORBETT DOOREN

A federal advisory panel overwhelmingly backed the weight-loss drug Qnexa, clearing the way for the Food and Drug Administration to potentially approve a prescription diet drug for the first time in more than a decade.

The vote raised fresh hopes that drug makers have finally found a pill to help the millions of Americans who struggle to shed pounds. With two-thirds of Americans considered overweight or obese, the market could be worth billions.
      Diet Woes

      Weight-loss drug setbacks

1997: American Home Products pulls Redux and Pondimin, components of "fen-phen," off the market on concerns they cause heart valves to leak.
2007: Sanofi-Aventis withdraws application to sell Acomplia in the U.S. after an FDA panel rejected the drug because it was linked to depression and suicidal thinking.
2008: Merck halts development of experimental antiobesity drug taranabant because of side effects including psychiatric events.

2010: Abbott Laboratories removes Meridia from the U.S. market amid concerns it is linked to heart attack and stroke. FDA also rejects Qnexa by Vivus on the grounds it needs more information about possible cardiovascular effects and rejects lorcaserin by Arena Pharmaceuticals.
2011: FDA rejects Contrave from Orexigen Therapeutics and Takeda Pharmaceutical and asks for another clinical trial on long-term heart risk.

Qnexa, which is made by a small California firm called Vivus Inc., and two other weight-loss drugs were rejected by the FDA in the past two years on concerns about potential safety risks. But on Wednesday, a panel of non-FDA medical experts reviewed additional clinical data that convinced panelists the drug's benefits outweigh any dangers.

The panel's 20-2 vote amounts to a recommendation that the FDA approve the drug for sale. The agency usually follows the advice of its panels but isn't required to. The FDA is expected to make a final decision by April 17.

The development of obesity compounds has been a tough area for companies since the fen-phen drug combination was taken off the U.S. market in 1997, after one of the medication's components was linked to heart-valve damage.Abbott Laboratories removed its weight-loss drug Meridia from the U.S. market in 2010 amid concerns about the drug's risk of side effects like heart attack and stroke.Roche Holding AG's Xenical is the only long-term prescription weight-loss drug on the market, though it hasn't gained wide usage partly because of gastrointestinal side effects..

Several panel members said they were impressed with the magnitude of the weight loss seen with Qnexa. They said plans by the company to conduct long-term safety studies on potential heart risks and sell the drug through a limited number of mail-order pharmacies swayed them in favor of supporting the drug despite limited safety data.

Qnexa is a controlled-release formulation that combines low doses of two older generic drugs: the stimulant phentermine, which cuts appetite, and topiramate, which increases the sense of feeling full. Topiramate is also sold under the brand name Topamax by Johnson & Johnson to treat migraines and seizures.
      Journal Community

Some doctors are already using the combination of the drugs to treat obesity, which is why some FDA panel members said it was important to get Qnexa on the market so that patients have appropriate benefit and risk information.

Qnexa would be targeted at adults who are considered obese or who are overweight and have another weight-related condition like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. Patients have lost about 10% of their bodyweight on average from the drug. The pill would be given once daily.

Still, FDA approval of Qnexa isn't guaranteed. In 2010, a similar FDA panel voted 13-7 to support Orexigen Therapeutics Inc.'s Contrave, but the agency went against its panel's advice and asked the company to conduct a long-term cardiovascular outcomes trial before the FDA would again consider the drug. Orexigen has said the study will likely start later this year.

Qnexa was invented by Dr. Thomas Najarian in 2003, then a full-time scientist at Vivus who remains at the company part-time. The company, based in Mountain View, Calif., also developed an erectile-dysfunction treatment but doesn't yet have meaningful revenue.

"We are certainly optimistic," Peter Tam, Vivus' president, said of the chance of having Qnexa approved. "This is a big step for us." Vivus wouldn't comment on how much Qnexa could cost if it hit the market.

Vivus shares, halted during the market's regular session Wednesday as the FDA panel met, reopened during after-hours trading and jumped 87% to $19.79. Shares of other obesity-drug makers also surged in after-hours trading following the panel's backing. Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. added 14% to $2.07, while Orexigen gained 15% to $3.69, after rising 5.6% during the regular session.

In addition to Qnexa, the FDA is again reviewing Arena's lorcaserin. That drug will also face an FDA panel before a June agency decision.

When FDA rejected Qnexa in 2010, the agency asked Vivus for two-year clinical data clinical data rather than the one year's worth of data that was available then. At the time the FDA said the drug resulted in "significant" weight loss but the agency said it was concerned about a possible risk of birth defects and an unknown impact on the heart.

Clinical studies showed Qnexa led to an increased heart rate in some patients but it also reduced blood pressure, making the long-term effects on the heart unclear.

Other studies of the topiramate in Qnexa have suggested an increased birth-defect risk. The FDA said exposure to topiramate in pregnancy "is likely to be associated with a two- to fivefold increased prevalence of oral clefts," a defect of the mouth that can be later treated with surgery. Vivus has proposed a program to educate women of childbearing age about the risk of Qnexa and the need to use birth control while taking it

Ok I'm going to bring some honest discussion to what Vivus is worth now, or soon, as a company. Others please feel free to pine in respectfully.

      1) I think with the 20-2 vote today (1,000% more independent medical professionals on the panel recommended that the FDA approve the drug than did not) we can assume with about 99% confidence that Qnexa will become FDA approved at or before April. Of course they will have to do a post-approval CV study, and the cost of that will be carried by Vivus.
      2) Qnexa peak annual sales can range anywhere from $2B to $5B
      3) 3-4x peak annual sales is standard multiplier to what biotech stock with a new drug translates to in terms of market cap. This means Qnexa is worth potentially $6B-$20B.
      4) Since that high end seems a little ridiculous, even though it's possible, I'm going to make the range more conservative and lower those numbers to 3-3.5x, and $2-$3.5B. That still equates to $6B-$12.25B market cap with about a $9B expected value middle of that range.
      5) Avanafil has probably an 85-90% chance of getting approved. It's a slight change from the viagara molecule but makes it faster acting, more potent, and fewer side effects i.e. superior.
      6) Avanafil estimate: $400M-$800M peak annual sales
      7) This equates to $1.2B-$2.8B market cap with about a $2B expected value middle of that range
      8) Total company estimate in less than two months is therefore $7.2B-$15B, with expected value of $11B in the middle of that range
      9) This equates to a stock price of $80.68 to $168.08, with a $123.26 expected value using the averages of the expected ranges

I understand that you have to discount from these numbers FOR NOW, because there is still risk that either one doesn't get approved before April, but with the 99% chance for Qnexa and the probably 90%+ for Avanafil, I wouldn't discount it by much.

So to those saying that this stock can't go to $40 tomorrow, I strongly, strongly disagree. Once people realize the true value of Qnexa and of what just happened today, they'll realize that VVUS is a steal even at $40/share now. It not only could, but might be considered expected to, gain 100-200% even from that $40 figure in the next 2-3 months. Count in about 15M shares short and it could get to $40 and hold based purely on supply/demand economics soon.

      10) This also assumes no buyout. I'd estimate that there's a 50% chance that Vivus gets bought out by one smart big pharma by mid-May, in which case you would have to add a 25-50%(estimate) premium on top of the prices given.

Feel free to challenge these assumptions but at the high end, this could honestly be a $200/share stock in May...

JP Morgan has published a research report on VIVUS (NASDAQ: VVUS [FREE Stock Trend Analysis]) and has raised the price target from $13 to $30 after the company's positive vote by the FDA to approve Qnexa.

In the report, JP Morgan writes, "We reiterate our OW rating on VVUS following the resounding positive vote by the FDA's Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee (EMDAC) to approve Qnexa for the treatment of obesity. VVUS shares were halted all day but nearly doubled once they opened after hours. We would still be buyers given the magnitude of today's vote, the company's 100% global ownership of this asset, substantial P&L and NPV leverage, 18% short interest, and the fact that this stock is under owned by most healthcare investors. We are raising our target to $30 from $13, and we believe this is still based on conservative assumptions."

JP Morgan maintains its Overweight rating on VIVUS, which closed yesterday at $10.55

      zur shortsituation

The good news for the longs is the other call options that are outstanding. You can assume that most of these calls were covered calls, that is that some long stock holder sold the call option to take in some income or as a hedge if the stock were to drop. Most of the March calls were written in the past few days. Now that the stock popped these longs can't sell their stock because they have written deep in the money calls.

Bad news for the shorts. The company has 88mm shares outstanding with a float of 55mm. As noted above about 7mm shares are tied up with option trades. Throw in another 10mm or so shares in mutual fund indexes and ETFs and your effective float drops to 38mm shares.

effective float 38mm shares and effective shorts 10-11mm shares on a stock flying higher will make it hard to cover. This should = maximum pain for the shorts.

Mhh mal guckn'

New Patents Broaden Protection for Qnexa

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 8, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- VIVUS, Inc. (Nasdaq: VVUS) today announced the issuance of three additional patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) covering Qnexa, an investigational new drug candidate for the treatment of obesity. The three new patents are the second, third, and fourth patents to be granted in a series of patent applications VIVUS has filed that are directed to the Qnexa product and methods of using Qnexa in various therapeutic applications. U.S. Patent No. 7,659,256 affords broad composition-of-matter protection as well as expanded protection on the use of Qnexa to effect weight loss in patients who may be overweight or obese. In addition, U.S. Patent No. 7,674,776 broadly claims Qnexa dosage forms, controlled release formulations, and methods of use, including the treatment of Syndrome X, a common multisymptomatic disorder often found in obese patients, and the treatment of other conditions that can be alleviated with loss of body weight, such as sleep apnea. U.S. Patent No. 7,553,818 also expands on the method-of-use coverage provided by the initial VIVUS patent in this series, U.S. Patent No. 7,056,890, issued June 6, 2006.

"The three new patents significantly expand on the intellectual property coverage afforded Qnexa, and the issuance of these patents indicates that the USPTO clearly continues to recognize the unique aspects of Qnexa," stated Peter Tam, president of VIVUS. "Together with the original Qnexa patent, these new patents provide substantial protection for our Qnexa franchise into at least 2020."

      About VIVUS

VIVUS is a biopharmaceutical company developing therapies to address obesity, sleep apnea, diabetes and male sexual health. The company's lead investigational product in clinical development, Qnexa, has completed Phase 3 clinical trials for the treatment of obesity and is currently being considered for approval by U.S. and EU regulators. VIVUS received a Complete Response Letter, or CRL, to the initial Qnexa NDA on October 28, 2010. We resubmitted the Qnexa NDA in October 2011, with an FDA action date of April 17, 2012. In January 2012, we received the 180-day LOI from the CHMP. In order to perform additional analyses to allow further insights into the data as previously presented, we requested and have received an extension to respond and we plan to submit in the second quarter of 2012.

Qnexa is also in Phase 2 clinical development for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea. In the area of sexual health, VIVUS has submitted an NDA for avanafil, a PDE5 inhibitor being studied for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, with an FDA action date of April 29, 2012. hier ein excellentes posting aus dem yahoo-forum bezgl. der Diskussion um den leicht erhöhten Herzzschlag und die Verwendung und Dosierung von Phentermin in qnexa.

VVVUS Watcher you do bring up a good point and if you have an answer to this part of the approval argument I will consider your opinion and purchase put protection. Either way I appreciate you doing your research and sharing your oppinion! We will take Topiramate out of the equation/argument since it has no cardio history.

      1. Did you consider that phentermine is the most prescribed anti-obesity drug ever as colabarated at the 3-28 meeting.

      2. In addition this drug has 58 years of use aka almost 6 decades including being attached to the famous fen. Do you think the FDA has enough safety data and confidence?

3.Every trial lawyer/medical expert tried to link Phentermine to the cardio vascular issues of that Fen/Phen with no success. Clean bill of health!!! Most scurinized drug ever!!!

      4. Phentermine is approved at 30 mg and is used off-label for long term use and is well documented.

      5. Qnexa dosing of phentermine: low 3.75mg mid 7.5 mg and high 15mg.

Better explained: 12.5%, 25% and 50% of the dose of the most prescribed drug ever for obesity (Phentrmine)

      6. Finally the most promising thing about phentermine is actually the rise in Heart beat in yr 2 of 1.6 per min. This tells me this is not just a 6 month fix but from a pharmacological standpoint it tells me this could be a longterm/successful option for pts.

      7. 1.6 for Qnexa vs. 2-4 for cup of coffee. walk accross room 4-6 beats per minute. Watching vvus go up and down 10 beats per minute. Its mechanism of action is a stimulant and the heart rate tells me its working and is very managable and acceptable increase. This also does not include REMS programs.

In conlusion do you feel the FDA will take the 58 years of clinicalexperience of Phentermine and realizing the much lower dosing of the same compound (Qnexa) and draw a conclusion that the heart risk is managable and post approval study is ok?

Also 10.5% to 15% Efficacy vs. 5%-7% for its rivals. Putting this into perspecitve double the weight loss. I heard the words risk/beneift in every other statement made at all these panel meetings and this will supercede your argument.

Thoughts? And do you beleive the FDA considered this in their decision and also why did they not request the cardio studiesin the CRL back in 2010. How do they tell a company it was not an issue and wait 2 yrs to tell them we were wrong we should of issued a CRL with pre-approval study? Anything is possible but highly unlikely.

Merrill Lynch on Lorcaserin approval hurdles

More work to be done before lorcaserin gets approved
ARNA management held an investor call this morning following yesterday’s positive advisory committee vote for lorcaserin in obesity treatment. Management indicated that it has had only preliminary discussions with FDA for any post
approval requirements for the drug. Despite ARNA’s belief that its drug has no safety signals, we expect at a minimum that the PDUFA decision date will be delayed beyond June 27th in order to develop a valvulopathy monitoring program,
a possible post approval cardiovascular outcomes trial, and potentially a cancer monitoring registry, all collectively suggested by panel members. We also expect post approval discussions regarding DEA assignment to further delay the launch. We maintain our Underperform rating with a $5 PO.

Model adjustments post Eisai Marketing agreement

Arena has amended its marketing agreement with Eisai to include most of North and South America. Upon approval, lorcaserin will be manufactured by Arena’s
subsidiary in Switzerland and sold to Eisai for ~31% of the selling price. Our riskadjusted sales estimate for lorcaserin in 2017 is $530mn, which is below our $900mn and $1.8bn respective risk-adjusted sales estimates for Orexigen’s Contrave and Vivus’ Qnexa, driven largely by relatively efficacy differences. Our EPS revisions were due to an expected lower tax rate and amended milestones
      from Eisai.

Vivus US Provides Update on Timing of European Decision for Qnexa

Oral Hearing Scheduled for September 2012 Meeting of the CHMP

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 5, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- VIVUS, Inc. (Nasdaq:VVUS) today announced that the European Medicines Agency's (EMA) Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has rescheduled the decision process on the Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for Qnexa, an investigational drug for the treatment of obesity.

In April, VIVUS submitted its response to the Day 180 List of Outstanding Issues from the CHMP, and was invited by the CHMP to participate in an oral hearing in order to provide additional explanations of the Day 180 response. An oral hearing is a customary part of the EMA approval process.

VIVUS requested additional time to prepare for the oral hearing, and the CHMP has agreed to schedule the hearing in September 2012. The CHMP opinion on the Qnexa MAA is now expected following the September meeting.

"We appreciate the flexibility of the CHMP to work with us on the timing of the oral hearing and the scheduling in September," said Peter Tam, president of VIVUS. "We look forward to presenting to the CHMP in September, but are currently focused on working with the FDA ahead of the July 17, 2012 PDUFA and the potential Qnexa launch in the U.S. in the second half of this year."

Insider Sales at Vivus: Sign of Things to Come?
By Reza Ganjavi - July 4,

With two weeks to go before the PDUFA date for Qnexa, the heavy selling of shares by the CEO of Vivus (NASDAQ: VVUS) has raised a few eyebrows among some investors. One would normally assume that if Vivus gets FDA approval for Qnexa the company should be worth more than today given Qnexa is the company's most important drug. So why have institutions sold more shares than they bought, and why is the CEO selling before PDUFA? There are a number of reasons discussed among investors, (for example, in this thread), besides the classic explanation that insider sales are automatic/pre-planned sales:

      1) Vivus has been in discussions with the FDA over a REMS program for some time. Many investors believe the REMS program and the label could put heavy restrictions on access to Qnexa (e.g., limitation on women in child-bearing age due to risks of birth defects, which is a major concern).

      2) The company might not be able to do any marketing and promotion, or at least a highly restrictive one, for an extended period of time.

      3) The company wants to set up its own sales organization and "go it alone" in the US. Shorting these types of launches is a favorite of some short sellers because many self-launches fail.

      4) Competitive pressure from Arena Pharmaceutical (NASDAQ: ARNA) is huge. Arena is in the game with a boutique drug, Belviq, which is safer than Qnexa; a strong partner, Eisai, which already has hundreds of sales people in the US, ready to hit the ground running; and an FDA label that is better than what most folks could dream about.

      5) Quiet period: perhaps after approval insiders enter a quiet period, which would prohibit sales.

      6) Vivus' current valuation seems to be over-hyped and many retail investors are predicting a bubble burst. The reasons behind this inflated valuation could be related to several analysts and hedge funds who were proven wrong in their predictions on Arena's success, and were basically caught on the wrong side of the equation. There was a consensus among some analysts that FDA's AdComm would turn Arena down, then they were giving FDA approval a small chance, then they were predicting REMS. Despite being wrong on all these counts, some analysts continued their version of reality against Arena, perhaps to save face, by further promoting Vivus. A good synopsis on this idea can be found here.

Some speculate that the CEO may be selling because Vivus may be overhyped and overpriced, for no other reason than to contain Arena's momentum because there are around 40,000,000 shares of Arena shorted.

Whatever the reason for the insider sales, PDUFA date of July 17 will bring a lot of clarity to this so-called obesity drug race.

      My predictions are:

      a) I give Qnexa's approval a 50/50 chance. Some argue that due to safety issues it should not be approved. On the positive side, it may limit use of unsafe generics.

      b) If approved, a very strict label and REMS program will be demanded by the FDA.

      c) If approved, Qnexa will have a slow launch.

      d) Most doctors will prefer Belviq due to its better safety profile.

      e) If approved, Qnexa's launch will be "shorted" and the valuation will drop to a much more realistic level (perhaps half of what it is today).

      f) As sales numbers roll in, analysts will have no choice but to acknowledge the facts vs. the "fiction making," to paraphrase Jim Cramer, which has dominated the obesity drug race so far.

      g) Arena will get a boost from a restrictive approval of Qnexa and claim the biggest piece of this huge pie.

Has Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ARNA) Peaked or will Biopharmaceutical Company See Greater Gains in the Near Future?
Posted on July 13, 2012 by Editor

To think that less than three months ago shares of Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ARNA) were trading as low as 2.00 is mind-numbing but with an FDA approval comes plenty of rewards and shareholders of the biopharmaceutical company experienced that first hand when the agency made lorcaserin, to be marked under the commercial name Belviq, the first obesity medication to win favor in 13 years.

That FDA approval came back in late June and shares climbed as high as 13.50 following the news but since that time ARNA has seen a noticeable pullback with shares falling as low as 10.08 on Thursday. While shares have managed to climb to the 11.20 mark on Friday there are concerns about where the price will go in the near future as the company could be facing some competition.

Just how likely it is that the FDA issues yet another approval for an obesity medication is yet to be seen but Vivus Inc. and their shareholders will find out next week with their Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA), or FDA `Action` date, for Qnexa, scheduled for July 17th. The overwhelming belief is that Vivus will win approval and that could spell trouble for ARNA and their shareholders.

Of course ARNA’s success isn’t dependent upon what happens on July 17th, the facts seem to support the belief that Belviq has fewer side effects than Qnexa and will be accessible to a larger market. That market is massive considering that the FDA approved lorcaserin for those who are obese or who have a body mass index (BMI) of 27 and have another risk factor like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes. What that equates to is nearly two-thirds of the population in the United States.

As it stands there are still some concerns over what risks are presented by lorcaserin, namely how it could play a role in heart disease. While those concerns may have some merit the reality is if you are obese then you are already carrying risks of heart disease. That’s not to say that the risks of lorcaserin should be overlooked but common sense should prevail.

Whether or not Vivus and their Qnexa obesity medication can compete with ARNA’s Belviq remains to be seen but one thing is for certain, Qnexa doesn’t have the same market to work with. Even with an FDA approval Qnexa is facing tighter restrictions as IPQ Analytics, an independent research firm, has warned of “risks that exist which are not currently being factored into expectations.” This could lead to a risk management program that would accompany an approval for Qnexa, something that Belviq was able to avoid.

That could be of substantial benefit to ARNA as the risk management program for Qnexa could place restrictions on prescriptions for women of childbearing age and/or those with cardiovascular risk given the fact that the drug had been sent back for additional studies due to concerns about heart valve damage, a permanent and life-threatening side effect.

Not lost on investors is the fact that a number of insider transactions among executives at Vivus have taken place, giving some skeptics reason to believe that the company has its doubts about Qnexa and its impact on the market. While these transactions are well within the rights of executives and may simply be seen as an opportunity to grab profits the timing does appear odd.

Aside from the potential competition in the way of Qnexa, ARNA is also facing doubt from those who believe the company’s diet drug won’t earn as much as they expect. Jim Cramer has been among the most vocal on this front, predicting Arena will gain just below 40% of its revenue from treatment, substantially lower than what the company has predicted.

Without question there are legitimate concerns investors should be aware of when it comes to ARNA, namely that the company’s shares have already jumped more than 500% for the year. That leaves many to question whether or not ARNA has already peaked. With shares as high as they are right now it may make sense to wait for a pullback and if Vivus gets that approval next week there will almost certainly be a downturn for ARNA shares which could then provide an excellent opportunity for investors to build a position.

UPDATE 2-U.S. FDA approves Vivus weight-loss pill Qsymia

      Tue Jul 17, 2012 9:49pm EDT

      * Second new diet pill meets high FDA hurdles for approval

      * Qsymia approved for obese adults, some overweight adults

      * Vivus to conduct post approval heart-safety study

      By Ilaina Jonas

NEW YORK, July 17 (Reuters) - U.S. drug regulators approved Vivus Inc's obesity drug late on Tuesday, the second new diet pill approved in the last month, as health advocates push for new solutions to combat obesity.

Approval for the pill, to be sold under the brand name Qsymia, follows last month's go-ahead for Arena Pharmaceuticals' Belviq, but the approvals come after a 13-year dry spell for long-term weight loss drugs due to safety problems with past medicines.

Vivus was set to head a pack of three companies vying to get new drugs approved, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration delayed its decision for three months to review the company's plan for reducing risks once the drug is sold, such as birth defects and elevated heart rate.

Shares of Vivus fell nearly 8 percent, or $2.24, to close at $26.46 on the NASDAQ, after the FDA failed to come out with a public decision during regular trading hours. After hours, shares rose to $24.65.

Despite the delay, analysts say Vivus may still capture greater market share than Arena because its pill helped patients on average lose at least 10 percent of their weight after a year of treatment in pivotal clinical trials - compared to the average 5 percent weight loss seen in trials of Arena's Belviq.

"We believe that Qsymia has a significant advantage over Belviq, given its considerably better efficacy," Cowen and Co analyst Simos Simeonidis wrote in a research note.

Wall Street sees a successful new diet drug raking in billions of dollars.

The FDA, knowing that millions of Americans would be tempted to take weight-loss pills, set a high bar for approval because of safety problems and even deaths seen with past medicines. The most notorious, known as the "fen-phen" diet-drug combo, was pulled from the market in 1997 after being linked to serious heart valve damage.

But with some two-thirds of Americans considered overweight or obese - and the related costs to public health and the economy skyrocketing - the FDA has been under mounting pressure to approve new weight loss treatments.

"The degree and severity of obesity and the lack of effective pharmacological interventions that we face as a society were two primary reasons for the development of Qsymia," Vivus president Peter Tam said in a statement.

Qsymia was expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2012, he said.

The FDA approved the pill for use in obese adults, and in overweight adults who have at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.

"Qsymia, used responsibly in combination with a healthy lifestyle that includes a reduced calorie diet and exercise, provides another treatment option for chronic weight management in Americans who are obese or are overweight and have at least one weight-related comorbid condition," Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement.

      Drugs
FDA approves weight loss drug Qsymia, but we say skip it
      Jul 18, 2012 5:25 PM

The Food and Drug Administration Tuesday approved Qsymia, a combination of the stimulant phentermine and the anti-seizure drug topiramate extended-release, to help obese and overweight people lose weight. But our medical advisers say the pill should be avoided because it can cause several serious side effects.

According to the evidence submitted to the FDA, Qsymia appears to help people drop a few pounds. In studies, obese and overweight people who took Qsymia for one year lost 3.5 to 9.3 more pounds than those who took a placebo. But that small benefit is probably not worth the risks of birth defects, heart attacks, and strokes. In fact, two years ago the FDA rejected the drug, then called Qnexa, due to these concerns, and it is not clear why the FDA reversed course this time, since those side effects are still an issue.

The drug also carries a warning that it can increase heart rate and should not be used by people who have heart disease or have suffered a stroke. Due to the heart concern, Vivus, the manufacturer of Qsymia, is required to conduct a study to determine whether the drug poses a risk of major cardiovascular problems, including heart attack and stroke. Also too, pregnant women should not take Qsymia because it increases the risk of their children being born with a cleft lip or palate.

Qsymia will only be available through specially certified pharmacies under a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy, or REMS, which is intended to inform doctors and patients about the possibility of birth defects.

"The very idea that a post marketing risk evaluation strategy was a condition required by the FDA for approval of this combination drug product seems like putting the cart ahead of the horse," says Marvin Lipman, M.D., chief medical adviser for Consumer Reports. "Such a study may very well result in preventable mortality and morbidity, a high price to pay in exchange for a few pounds of flesh."

Qsymia contains several additional warnings, including that it can increase the risk of glaucoma, kidney stones, mood problems such as anxiety and depression, and suicidal behavior or thinking about suicide (ideation).

"This drug should only be used in the confines of a research trial in which consumers have been fully informed of its risks and benefits and, someone is responsible for the complications that occur. All the rest of us should wait until we know a lot more about its safety," says John Santa, M.D., director of the Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center.

Bottom Line: We recommend avoiding all weight-loss drugs and supplements. Their benefits are usually marginal. And even if they do help you to shed a few pounds, the side effects can be troublesome and even dangerous.

If you need to lose weight, increasing exercise and limiting portion size when it comes to food are better options.

Vivus (NASDAQ:VVUS): Why FDA Approval Is Not the Prescription

While the company has been busy furthering their FDA submission and selling stock, Vivus has simply avoided confronting the reality that they might not even be able to go to market.

The foundation stone of Vivus' IP protection is a patent licensing deal signed a decade ago with a Dr. Najarian, an obesity doctor and researcher who filed as sole inventor for Qsymia's two-drug combo. One question that has been hanging over the company for years is the possibility of patent infringement on one of Qsymia's two active ingredients, topiramate, a patent held by Johnson & Johnson, who used to sell the drug as an obesity treatment before it went generic. It affords patent protection until 2017.

It originally was filed by a researcher named Shank on June 29, 1996 (US PTO No. 6,071,537)[/i]

There is no evidence of the validity of this patent ever being challenged, either at the USPTO or the corresponding EP patent (EP0915697) filed here. There are no mentions in Vivus' filings of the Shank patent, and therefore no clues as to how Vivus plans to deal with it.

How exactly does Vivus overcome the Shank patent to sell topiramate for weight loss? Citron rates this unresolved question a substantial risk factor.

Vivus has had not just the last 5 months, but 5 years since questions about the Najarian, Shank and McElroy patents were posed by analysts, to create enough clarity to go to market.

Yet to this day, all we hear from the company is assurances that they have legal opinions in hand stating "they are OK". No joint ventures, no counterparty agreements, no releases.

Quite a cloud of uncertainty for a "multi-billion dollar opportunity" resting on the combination of two common generic drugs, don't you think?

If this were a solid pharma with high management credibility, maybe investors could give them the benefit of the doubt. But this management?

      Conclusion

Despite years of lead time, Vivus' executives have failed to provide strong patent protection for Qsymia. Taken together, these points provide the best explanation yet why Vivus hasn't been able to recruit a high-profile deep-pocketed pharma partner to leverage its expertise while taking some of the risk of marketing its newly approved diet combo drug.

Instead of selling a stake to a credible pharma marketer, they sold stock – over $230 million to …. you guessed it. The hope that a big pharma company is going to ride in pay $3 billion for Vivus is ludicrous – the strategy of trying to pierce its patent protection for a few million in legal fees is a far lower risk.

The more marketing hype about the FDA approval of this combination of two well-known and inexpensive legacy generic drugs, the more Vivus sets up its own ambush – by legal challenges to its patent, and generic drug competition starting before they can even get to market.

Vivus falls on concerns of patent protection for diet pill

      Thu Jul 19, 2012 4:12pm EDT

(Reuters) - Shares of Vivus Inc fell sharply on Thursday afternoon after well-known short-seller Citron Research cast doubts on the drugmaker's ability to protect its weight-loss pill's patents.

Citron in a report on its website pointed out the possibility that Johnson & Johnson could challenge Vivus in court over patents that cover usage of anti-seizure drug topiramate -- one of the key ingredients in Vivus' freshly approved Qsymia.

The Citron report comes two days after U.S. health regulators approved Qsymia for use in obese and overweight adults who have at least one weight-related condition. The drug was expected to have the potential to bring in more than $1 billion in sales.

Citron is run by California-based investor and notable short-seller Andrew Left.

It also pointed to possible problems with another Vivus patent, with claims related to methods for treating disorders that include obesity "using sulfamates (including topiramate) in combination with psychostimulants (including phentermine)".

Qsymia's second important ingredient is phentermine. The brokerage points to possible copy-cat versions eating up Qsymia's market as the product is made of two key ingredients, which are already available in the market as generics.

Competitor Orexigen Therapeutics Inc's shares also fell 10 percent after the report went public. Orexigen's experimental drug, Contrave, is a combination of slow release versions of naltrexone and a mild psychostimulant, bupropion.

Orexigen is currently conducting a trial to study risks of heart complications from using Contrave.

Shares of Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc -- the first drugmaker to get a diet pill approved in 13 years -- were down 2 percent at $9.75 on the Nasdaq. Arena got the approval late last month.

Vivus shares, which had gained 10 percent in value a day after its diet pill was approved, fell 13 percent to a low of $25.15 in afternoon trading.

      Und neu von J.P.Morgan, 18.Juli:
Qsymia's Approval Should Ensure that VVUS
Investors Are Well Fed, but the Skinny on OREX and
      ARNA May Be Mixed

J.P. Morgan does and seeks to do business with companies covered in its research reports. As a result, investors should be aware that the firm may have a conflict of interest that could affect the objectivity of this report. Investors should consider this report as only a single factor in making their investment decision.
After a roller coaster of a day with sharp but temporary stock drops and retracted media reports, FDA approval of VVUS’s obesity drug Qsymia (formerly Qnexa) finally became official last night. We see this as a clear (if not obvious) positive for VVUS, which is now further de-risked with two approved, unpartnered products. We also believe this development further strengthens the OREX story, as it gives us greater confidence in both of the company’s obesity assets. On the other hand, we suspect that shares of ARNA could come under pressure on the heels of this news.

       VVUS (OW): Qsymia’s label and REMS largely in-line with expectations;
weight loss thresholds better than expected.
 VVUS: Wed morning conference call could shed light on additional details.
 VVUS: Qsymia’s approval reinforces company’s substantial scarcity value.
 VVUS: we reiterate our OW rating and are upping our target to $38 from
      $35.

VVUS: Vivus: Deja vu all over again-Qsymia concerns take us back to 2009 -
      Rodman & Renshaw (25.78)

Rodman notes VVUS shares were rocked in the marketplace by a negative report by an independent research organization that called the co's intellectual property position on Qsymia into question. While firm will not attempt to rebut this report point-by-point, it is firm's opinion that the tone of the report is meant to create "FUD" (fear, uncertainty, doubt) but does little to inform those followers of VVUS who have kept an eye on the co for more than a ear. Further, VVUS seems to be a unique stock in the ire that it appears to enerate in reaction to good news. Feels like firm has been transported back to 2009 - Qsymia "issues" have been around for a while, firm has pretty much seen it all.

"Questions on the patent as there always is. So we have a fairly robust patent estate. This has been looked at several times by probably half a dozen folks in the room and several high-priced law firms here in New York City. In any event we feel very comfortable with the patent position that we have, we do have patent protection through 2020 both in the US and in Europe."

"40 year-old father of four who is the sole employee of Citron"

"The full 57-page report – which queries Evergrande’s financial reporting – led to a huge sell-off in the company’s stock. On June 21 the Hong Kong-listed firm had over $1 billion wiped from its market capitalisation.

Xu and his executives quickly fought back, issuing a point-by- point rebuttal via an investor conference call. Nine international investment banks also refuted Citron’s findings. Xu confirmed the company had Rmb13 billion of cash and denied that his firm – of which he owns 63% – is at all troubled. Calling Citron’s report “outrageous”, Caijing Magazine reports that Xu added: “The accusations against the company’s cash [position] are too ridiculous. How could a listed company fake its cash position on the company’s books when there are accounting firms conducting audits?”

In the ensuing weeks, Evergrande’s stock has recovered much of its losses, with Sina, a news portal, noting that it had “weathered the short-selling storm”.

However, given the scale of the publicity unleashed by the report, many are now asking who is behind Citron Research.

The answer is an American called Andrew Left and 21CN Business Herald tracked him down in Los Angeles. Left, the newspaper reports, is a 40 year-old father of four who is the sole employee of Citron. How, it asks, could an “ant” like Left have taken on an “elephant” like Evergrande, which generates over Rmb80 billion in sales?"

Vivus announced a near doubling of Qsymia prescriptions in December compared to November. Of course, if Vivus know the total number of Qsymia prescriptions for the fourth quarter, the company also knows how much revenue was generated from those Qsymia prescriptiosn. My guess is Vivus chose to publicize prescriptions totals while keeping sales hidden because the latter number is small and disappointing.

      Moin lunatics,

      Heute rauf morgen runter.
