Dowa Succeeds in Practical Application for Mass Production of a Deep Ultraviolet LED Chip Having the World`s Highest Output
      Mar 17, 2010
Dowa Electronics Materials Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Dowa Holdings Co., Ltd., has successfully developed practical applications for a deep ultraviolet LED that generates shorter wavelengths than the ultraviolet LEDs currently available on the market. Dowa Electronics Materials has begun to offer samples to develop a market.

The deep ultraviolet LED chip is expected to be used in a wide range of fields, including resin cure, adhesion, drying, medical treatment, analyses, photo catalysts, water purification, and sterilization, and is attracting the attention of companies worldwide. Compared with the existing mercury light source, the LED chip is expected to diversify wavelengths, create mercury-free light sources, and have a longer life. Because of a lack of suppliers able to mass-produce deep ultraviolet LEDs, the market is immature. However, if a supply system is established, we expect a market worth tens of billions of yen will emerge.

The deep ultraviolet LED consists of a nitride semiconductor and has been very difficult to manufacture. No manufacturers have therefore succeeded in mass-production. Dowa Electronics Materials has succeeded in developing a practical application for a deep ultraviolet LED chip that emits light with wavelengths of 300 nm to 350 nm. The company created an LED with the world's highest output power in wavelengths by combining its own AIN template (high-quality AIN film growing on the sapphire substrate) technology, and the newly obtained ultraviolet LED epi growth technology from Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) and RIKEN. The currently available sample has achieved an optical output power of 1.4mW with 20mA in wavelengths of 320nm to 350nm.

Dowa Semiconductor Akita Co., Ltd., a subsidiary manufacturer of Dowa Electronics Materials, is creating prototypes and is striving to start mass production. It will seek to increase the output power while at the same time developing deep ultraviolet LED chips that will emit light with shorter wavelengths.

Dowa Electronics Materials has the ability to manufacture many types of GaAs products and has more than 20 years of experience in the red and infrared LED business. The company has also in recent years been rapidly enhancing the Iineup of nitride semiconductors. In the first stage, it has launched a nitride electronic device

(HEMT) epi for high-frequency waves used at next-generation mobile phone base stations, etc. and for power semiconductors. The deep ultraviolet LED chip is a nitride product in the second stage. With the introduction of this product Dowa aims to bolster the base of its semiconductor business.

      Sumitomo Corporation
Enter Household Appliances Recycling Business in Tianjin
Aiming to Expand Environment/Recycling Business in China

Dowa Eco-System Co., Ltd (President: Yoshito Koga; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter “Dowa”), a subsidiary of Dowa Holdings Co., Ltd. (President and Representative Director: Masao Yamada; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and Sumitomo Corporation (President & CEO: Susumu Kato; Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter, “Sumitomo”) , have agreed to establish a joint company in the city of Tianjin to launch a business for recycling consumer electronic and home appliances in partnership with Tianjin City Green Angel Collection and Reuse of Recyclable Resources Co., Ltd. (President: Zheng Jianmin; Head Office: Tianjin City, China; hereinafter “Green Angel”).
While the new company is Dowa’s second recycling business based in China following a first recycling business based in Suzhou City, Jiansu Province to operate a general recycling business (Dowa Environmental Management Co., Ltd.), this agreement marks the first entry of Japanese general trading into the Chinese market for the recycling of household electronic appliances.
The Chinese recycling law to promote the adequate recycling of used or end-of-life household electrical appliances will take effect on January 1, 2011. On the back of Chinese remarkable economic growth in recent years, it is highly anticipated that consumer electrical and electronic products will be more widely used in China and also replaced by latest models at a faster pace, thereby resulting in growing demand in the near future for recycling of these products. Taking this significant opportunity, Dowa and Sumitomo agreed to jointly establish the company in April 2010 to expand the business in China.
The new company will take advantage of the respective strengths of the three participating companies: Dowa’s expertise and know-how in recycling waste consumer electronic and home appliances in Japan, China and Southeast Asia; Sumitomo’s know-how in business operation all over the world and its strong business network in
China; and the waste collection network that Green Angel operates in Tianjin to collect household recyclables from its 300 locations as well as electronics retail stores.
Besides the agreement on the Tianjin joint company, Dowa and Sumitomo are planning to expand the recycling businesses of household electronic appliances across the country on the back of China being increasingly conscious of resource recycling.
In addition, Dowa and Sumitomo are considering the possibility of expanding their environment/recycling business to other Asian regions, which are rapidly becoming aware of the importance of recycling waste products and using resources effectively.

Bloomberg reported that Dowa Metals & Mining Company plans to double the ore procurement rate from its mines to 30% in 5 years as it faces competition from China and India.

Mr Nobuo Yamazaki the unit’s president said that “To survive as a smelter in current conditions, it’s important to invest in mines. This will secure stable supplies as well as business returns.”

According to CRU Group, China and India are driving demand for copper to build homes, cars and power grids. Expansion of China’s smelting capacity has caused an ore shortage that will persist through at least 2014. Processing fees slumped 38% this year as smelters competed to process scarce raw material.

Mr Yamazaki said at the Asian Copper Club meeting that the company is looking for opportunities in mine investment including small and medium sized projects to reach the 30% target.

Dowa Holdings, in a venture with Sojitz Corporation and Furakawa Company said recently that it would spend USD 183 million to buy a 25% stake in the Gibraltar copper mine in British Columbia from Taseko Mines Limited.

Mr Yamazaki said that with the start of shipments from Gibraltar, the company plans to raise the procurement rate to 15% this year. Currently, the company secures 5% to 6% of its copper ore needs from Canada’s Huckleberry mine.

      Eiskratzen adé: Forscher entwickeln Alleskönner-Scheibe

      21.09.2010, 10:39 Uhr

      Keine Kratzer, keine Korrosion

Dowa Mining Holdings Co said that it plans to resume operations of its 200,000 tonnes per year Akita zinc smelter in northeastern Japan in early April.

The Akita plant is Japan's biggest zinc smelter, accounting for nearly 30% of Japan's total production.

Dowa also said it plans to restart its Kosaka copper smelter, with production capacity of 8,000 tonnes a year, in the northeast of Japan in early April.

Nearly 65% of Japan's production capacity of zinc, used in automotive steel sheet and construction materials, has been suspended since the March 11 earthquake that devastated coastal areas of northeast Japan.

Speciality metals: China squeezes, investors grab

      Wednesday, November 02, 2011

As with rare earths, so with speciality and rare metals - China is tightening its grip in metals in which it dominates global supply. From Beijing comes news that China will cut export quotas for tin, tungsten, antimony and molybdenum in 2012, all of which it is the world‘s top producer (in the case of antimony, accounting for about 75 per cent of global output).

The new totals (with 2011 quotas in parenthesis) are: tungsten 15,400 tonnes (15,700); tin 18,000 tonnes (18,900); antimony 59,400 tonnes (60,300); molybdenum 25,000 tonnes (25,500) and indium 231 tonnes (233).

This coincides with a Reuters report out of London that says many investors - put off gold and silver due to their present high prices - are turning to the minor metals market as a safe haven for their pension funds. 'We've always had a certain amount of interest from the rich in the Anglo-American sector. About four years ago it started to pick up within people with average wealth,' Gunther Maassen of German trading firm Haines & Maassen was quoted by Reuters as saying.

Meanwhile, a British investment website, London South East, reports that Frankfurt-based metals trader Tradium has set a 50,000 euro minimum for private investors to buy physical metal. Among the metals private investors ae now stocking up on are indium, germanium, gallium and hafnium - so much so that Tradium has opened a new storage facility in the Rhine-Main area. “At current prices, 50,000 euros worth of indium, for example, would amount to over 100 kg of metal,” the website says. There is also growing interest among European investors in REE as they recognise the importance of these elements in magnet production.

There have been separate reports that indium prices have overtaken those of gallium. They are sitting at between $US620 and 690 per kilogram and $US610-670/kg respectively.

As for tungsten, the metal has found a new use recently: in wedding rings, being much cheaper than gold - you can buy them for as little as $US179, although one with three diamonds will set you back $US745. And, because tungsten is one of he hardest metals around (which is why it is vital for machine tools), these rings don't get scratches. Now one of the big U.S. online retailers, Titanium-jewellery.com, has launched line of cobalt rings.

Again, as with REE, these minor and speciality metals are finding new uses - and new investors - every week.

ITO film demand expected to grow 25.6% in 2014 (ITO=indium tin oxide)
Siu Han, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Monday 24 November 2014]

ITO film demand is expected to grow 25.6% on year in 2014, showing a slowdown over the on-year increase of 40% in 2013.

The ITO film market will reach an estimated 31.4 million square meters in 2014, including that for metal mesh and silver nanowire technologies.

Demand has largely been driven by large-size applications in addition to wearables. Additionally, the ASP for the technology has dropped from US$40 in 2013 to US$20-25 in 2014, and is expected to further drop in 2015.

O-Film has been one of the main producers of the technology, and has been using low-priced solutions to gain orders in the notebook segment. However, the company has suffered from low yields.

Both China and Taiwan makers estimate increased shipments for ITO film in 2015 for small- to medium-size applications.
