Panax Geothermal strikes steam in SA
      Tuesday April 6, 2010, 4:24 pm

A geothermal energy company has struck the environmentally friendly equivalent of oil in South Australia's southeast, in doing so putting the federal government on track to meet its promised green energy targets.

Panax Geothermal's drilling rig at its Salamander-1 geothermal well in the Otway Basin near Penola has hit steam.

Geothermal energy is heat from the earth's crust that has zero emissions and is an environmentally-sustainable, natural resource that is baseload-ready for electricity production.

Unlike other renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar, geothermal energy is continuous rather than reliant upon the weather.

Panax Geothermal managing director Bertus de Graaf said Tuesday's announcement means the company was one step closer to having a demonstration power plant in operation by May 2011, subject to the results of Salamander-1.

"This has shown there is a reservoir that can flow and the temperature projections have been confirmed, so we were more or less spot on ... so far so good," he told AAP.

SA Premier Mike Rann said the hot sedimentary aquifer project was the most advanced in the country.

"South Australia's Otway Basin contains what geologists call an anomalously high heat flows relatively close to the national electricity grid," he said.

"This means successful projects in the Otway Basin are much closer to the electricity grid than the hot rock geothermal projects now being explored in the remote far north of the state."

The government hopes a success could eventually lead to renewable geothermal energy being tapped into the national electricity market.

"It is still too early to draw any conclusions as to the quality of the reservoir tapped by the Salamander-1 well."

Dr de Graaf said the quality of the reservoir would be determined by mid-May.

Federal Energy Minister Martin Ferguson welcomed the breakthrough.

"It is a very important step forward in the development of baseload renewable energy in Australia," he told AAP.

At the well's official opening last month, Mr Ferguson said wind power was not reliable whereas geothermal was the clean equivalent of a coal-fired power station.

"This (geothermal energy) is where we have to make the breakthrough otherwise we will find it challenging to actually meet 20 per cent," Mr Ferguson said.

"The early growth is going to be in wind power but the real breakthrough we need is in areas such as geothermal because its baseload reliable power that is akin to a coal-fired power station."

Although Dr de Graaf was happy about the announcement, he said the entire renewable energy sector was being let down because there is no price on carbon and a discrepancy in the price of renewable energy certificates.

Panax shares closed 1.5 cents higher at 14 cents on Tuesday.

23 April 2010 ASX ANNOUNCEMENT Short Flow Test Results of Salamander-1 Well Panax Geothermal Ltd (“Panax”) advises that results of the recently completed short term clean-up flow indicate that the Salamander-1 well requires further clean-up before the long term flow or well productivity test can be undertaken. This second clean-up has been scheduled to be carried out in the week starting 10 May, 2010. As a consequence of the above, the long term flow or productivity test, which is designed to convert part of the established “Measured Geothermal Resources” into “Geothermal Reserves” (see attached diagram), is now rescheduled to take place in June, 2010.

The costs of this additional clean-up flow can easily be accommodated from current cash reserves. Long Term Flow or Well Productivity Tests Step 1 Step 2 1. Flow well using air lift; 2.

Panax Geothermal achieves temperature of 171.4°C in Salamander-1 well
      company news image

Following the steam produced at the Salamander-1 well in South Australia in April, Panax Geothermal (ASX: PAX), Panax has today reported a bottom hole temperature of 171.4°C was recorded in the well at a depth of 4,000m.

The new temperature is significant as it is well above the projected temperature of 160°C and 15 degrees hotter than previously reported.

As importantly, increased geothermal temperatures in the target reservoir rocks "have a highly positive effect on the overall economics of the Penola Project."

The new bottom hole temperature was measured earlier today, managing director Bertus de Graaf said, during well logging, conducted as part of the well clean-up flow operations.

De Graaf said it was too early to draw any specific conclusions from the result.

      2 June 2010 ASX ANNOUNCEMENT
Panax Pursues Brownfield Geothermal Opportunity in
Sumatra and Completes an Indonesia-wide MOU with
      Bakrie Power
Panax Geothermal Ltd (“Panax”) is pleased to advise that good progress has been made in
advancing its geothermal interests in Indonesia. During meetings last week in Jakarta,
Panax entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) with PT Bakrie Power (“BP”),
regarding joint exploration and development of geothermal resources and reserves across
the whole of Indonesia. PT Bakrie Power is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bakrie Group of
Companies, led by PT Bakrie & Brothers Tbk (“Bakrie Group”), a publicly listed company
established under the laws of the Republic of Indonesia. In line with Bakrie Group’s interest
in the infrastructure sector, BP was founded in 1994 to pursue opportunities in the power
      generation business.
Under the terms of this MOU, Panax will be the operator with a 51% interest, with the
remaining equity being held by BP. The initial focus of this collaboration will be on the
supply of base-load geothermal power to PT Dairi Prima’s underground zinc/lead mine in
Northern Sumatra. The above mentioned MOU will partially replace the earlier announced
MOU with PT Dairi Prima, with the exception of Panax’s right to directly supply the Dairi
Prima mine with geothermal power, i.e. BP will replace Dairi Prima in funding the geothermal
power development costs and share in the future power supply to the mine....

      16 August 2010 ASX ANNOUNCEMENT

Panax Finalises two Binding Agreements for Geothermal Developments with Indonesian Companies: “PT Bakrie Power” & “PT Dairi Prima Minerals” Panax Geothermal Ltd (“Panax”) is pleased to announce that it has completed a “Binding Terms Sheet Agreement” with PT Bakrie Power (“Bakrie”) regarding a Joint Venture for the exploration, development and generation of power from geothermal resources across the Republic of Indonesia. The new agreement replaces the previous “Memorandum of Understanding” between Panax and Bakrie as announced in June 2010. The Joint Venture includes: • Geothermal project areas that have already been awarded to Bakrie; • Geothermal areas that Bakrie has already tendered for in Indonesia; • Additional geothermal areas that Panax and Bakrie will jointly identify as suitable for geothermal development.

The Joint Venture will initially focus on: • The development of existing geothermal resources of the Sokoria Project located on the Island of Flores, for the development of a 30 MW geothermal power plant; and • The direct supply of approximately 25 MW of base-load geothermal power from existing geothermal resources to PT Dairi Prima’s planned underground zinc/lead mine in northern Sumatra. Panax and Bakrie have also completed a “Binding Terms Sheet Agreement” with PT Dairi Prima Minerals (“PTDPM”) for the supply of up to 25 MW of geothermal power for PTDPM’s Dairi Prima mine in northern Sumatra. The Sokoria Project, Flores (Panax 45% working interest) Bakrie won a tender in September 2009 to develop 30MW of power generation at the Sokoria geothermal field at an electricity tariff of USD12.5c/kWh (or USD$125/MWh), excluding applicable carbon credits.

The Sokoria geothermal field is well explored and includes three completed exploration wells. A bottom hole temperature of 188°C has been measured at a depth of 532m. Geothermal reservoir temperatures at depths of 1,500m to 2,000m are estimated at >230°C.

The Sokoria project has an excellent infrastructure, being located only 30km from the island’s capital of Ende, which has well established port facilities. The Sokoria region has a geothermal resource potential in excess of 100 MW. The island of Flores has a total population of 1.5 million and currently relies solely on diesel power generation.

5 October 2010 ASX ANNOUNCEMENT Panax Optimistic about Salamander-1 Well Potential Panax Geothermal Ltd (“Panax”) is pleased to advise that the final well test report as completed by SKM (New Zealand) has now been received. This report presents the results of five production/discharge tests and one injection test. The results of these tests are not different from those already reported previously by Panax*).

However, it now appears likely that the test results reflect the status of the well itself, rather than the quality of the intersected target reservoir rocks. By adopting appropriate well completion techniques/methods, we are optimistic that the Salamander-1 well can still be developed into a production well. The pioneering 4,025m deep Salamander-1 well met its primary objectives by intersecting more than 1,100m of target reservoir rocks, the Pretty Hill Sandstone.

Over the interval 2,900m-3,570m, it intersected 675m of reservoir sandstones with an average porosity of 13.2%, followed by 411m of reservoir sandstones over the interval 3,570-4,000m, with average porosity of 10.2%. Interpretation of the petrophysical logs (wireline logging data) of the target open hole section indicates that the total thickness of the intersected permeable zones (transmissivity = capacity to flow, also known as Darcy meters or Dm or as kh) has a “most likely” value of 6.7 Dm and this would meet the requirements for a Demonstration Plant, which could meet all the power requirements for Penola. The interpreted petrophysical logs have also indicated that the transmissivity could be as high as 13.5 Dm, some 30% higher than that originally targeted for Salamander-1.

The bottom hole geothermal temperature was measured at 171.4°C, exceeding the projected target temperature by more than 10°C. Well test results show that the transmissivity of the well significantly decreased with each successive production/discharge test, with the final test showing a transmissivity of less than one tenth of its starting value. Also, results clearly indicate that the acid treatment, which was carried out after the fourth discharge test, decreased the remaining transmissivity by approximately 50%.

Salamander-1 is a pioneering HSA well, with a 1,100m lined, open hole section. From the outset we were aware that precautions had to be taken with drilling the long open hole section of the well. According to regulations, Salamander-1 had to be drilled with overweight drilling *) see ASX announcement 21 June & 5 July, 2010 and June, 2010 Quarterly Report.

Theindonesiatoday.com - Panax Geothermal Limited has acquired 45% participating interest in the Sokoria Project in Flores Island, Indonesia.

"This outcome was achieved following the execution of a share sale and purchase agreement between Panax and PT Bakrie Power, with Panax now owning 45% equity in PT Sokoria Geothermal Indonesia," Panax told investors this morning.

PT Bakrie Power established PT Sokoria Geothermal Indonesia (SGI) following the award of the project by Indonesian government in September 2009.

Sokoria is a near term geothermal development project, with the target reservoir at approximately 2,000m depth. Indications are that the overall potential is well over 100 MW generating capacity, while SGI has already been awarded concessions to generate power for the first 30 MW. (Theindonesiatoday.com)

29 January 2011 Dear Shareholder Re: Quarterly Report for Period ending December, 2010 Please find enclosed a copy of the December Quarterly Report. I am pleased to let you know that Panax further consolidated its position in Indonesia, with the Company now owning 45% equity in PT Sokoria Geothermal Indonesia, the owner of the of 30 MW Sokoria development project located in Flores. Panax will be the initial operator, with the well site selection studies now in progress.

Panax is also working with its Indonesian partner PT Bakrie Power to advance the 25 MW Dairi Prima project in N. Sumatra, with further initiatives planned for the current quarter. Shareholders should know that Panax remains committed to the Penola Project in the Limestone Coast area of South Australia.

An expert review (in progress) has thrown new light on the Salamander-1 well testing results and these justify being followed-up. However, with Australia’s renewable energy policies and investment framework still a work in progress (no pun intended), further major investments in this project will be subject to improved market conditions for our sector and/or the attraction of a Joint Venture partner. It is pleasing to note that the recent independent research report on Panax by the Bakers Investment Group noted that Panax is differentiating itself within the Australian geothermal sector through its focus on “lower risk, short time-to-market projects, with clear returns from long term power purchase agreements (PPAs) at highly favourable tariffs.” The recent increase in the PAX share price, which restored Panax to the #2 position within the Australian geothermal sector, occurred shortly after the release of the Bakers report in early December 2010.

Plans are in place to market Panax by presenting “our case” to selected investors and brokers in a number of Asian financial centers. As announced, and as part of a longstanding plan, I will retire from my position as Managing Director/CEO at the end of this month (but will remain on the Board as a non- executive director) and will be succeeded by my co-Director Kerry Parker, who has been with Panax since its inception. I leave my position with mixed feelings, especially as market conditions for renewable energy in Australia did not develop according to expectations, especially in the light of the real threat of global warming.

At the same time I feel confident that Panax, with its team of dedicated professionals and world class advisors, ....
