Latest European pilot line will focus on free-form micro-optics

CSEM-led 'PHABULOuS' consortium gets €15M to raise manufacturing readiness levels of free-form micro-optical components

Several industrial partners, including a number of photonics SMEs, are involved in a new four-year European project to set up a pilot manufacturing line capable of producing free-form optics.

Intended to help develop applications of the novel technology in areas such as microdisplays for augmented reality (AR) and innovative designs for professional, automotive, and transportation lighting, the partners in the “PHABULOuS” effort will share a total project budget of €17.5 million - including €15 million provided by the European Commission via the industrial leadership pillar of the Horizon 2020 program.

SME involvement
Officially launched last week by project coordinators at the Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM) in Neuchâtel, the effort also features Austria-headquartered Swarovski, the Swiss firm SUSS Micro-optics, Netherlands-based Morphotonics, Finland’s Nanocomp, and UK-based PowerPhotonic.

Among the potential users also involved are the German automotive lighting giant Hella and Austria’s Zumtobel Lighting, while the European Photonics Industry Consortium is among the participants.

Rolando Ferrini, who heads up the CSEM lab’s thin-film optics work, is the project’s principal investigator. In a statement issued by the research and development center, he predicted:

“PHABULOuS will open a new era for free-form micro-optics enabling the industrial manufacture of innovative micro-optical components for a wealth of different photonics applications.”

Ferrini added that the pilot line should become a “unique entry point” in Europe for the production of devices integrating free-form microstructures - thus attracting both SMEs and large companies alike.

SUSS Optics CEO Reinhard Voelkel pointed out that expertise on offer in wafer-level optics and free-form structures ought to improve the competitiveness of both European photonics companies and manufacturing in the region in general.

Officially, Hella is one of the six industrial use “case partners” involved in the effort. Daniela Karthaus, who has responsibility for new optical technologies at the company, said:

“Within the PHABULOuS project, Hella looks at highly innovative micro-optics for miniaturizing the existing automotive lighting solutions to enable new design possibilities, as well as the reduction of construction space and weight to contribute to an efficiency increase for electric vehicles and autonomous driving.”

Use cases
In the official European Commission abstract describing the new pilot line, the project partners state that over the next 5-10 years they anticipate an increasing need for free-form micro-optics to address the challenges set by the photonics market.

“The industrial demand for free-form microlens arrays (FMLAs) is a current market reality,” adds the team. “However, the high access barriers to pre-commercial production capabilities in Europe prevent companies, especially SMEs, from commercially exploiting the FMLA technology.”

Specific topics that the consortium will focus on include developing industrially relevant predictive software packages and manufacturing tools and processes, as well as characterization methods for in- and off-line quality inspection - all deemed necessary for demonstrating successful pre-commercial production runs.

The partners have also identified four key goals. The first of those is to mature FMLA manufacturing processes and functionalities from technology readiness level (TRL) 5 to TRL 7, and the overall manufacturing readiness level (MRL) of the pilot line to MRL 8-9, partly by adapting predictive algorithms into simulation packages.

Overall, six industrial use-cases are set to be implemented, alongside the establishment of an open-access, sustainable, distributed pilot line infrastructure with a single entry point. Finally, the plan is to validate the pilot line’s services through the implementation of 20 industrial pilot cases.

As well as solid-state lighting applications, those could include uses in photovoltaics, displays, consumer electronics and wearables, and anti-counterfeiting and branding.

Paris, 14th October 2019 – The demonstration, created in partnership with pureLiFi, uses light within an access point installed in the ceiling to send large amounts of data at Gbps speeds to a laptop. Using light for wireless communications can help overcome significant connectivity challenges across several industries.

Zumtobel is demonstrating to customers how repurposing light for high-speed communication can help solve challenges within sectors such as medical, defence, industrial and manufacturing.
LiFi is more secure and virtually interference-free compared to other wireless solutions. With the use of LiFi, often wireless communications can be deployed in environments where Wi-Fi cannot, such as surgical theatres, RF hostile manufacturing floors and highly sensitive secure environments. Zumtobel is currently evaluating the technology with their customers to develop new use cases that solve its customer’s connectivity challenges.

More broadly, LiFi can help enhance the wireless user experience for the general consumer by providing interference-free communications and ultra-fast speeds.
Zumtobel will be exhibiting at the REXEL EXPO in Paris from the 14th to the 18th of October, at booth M09 (Lighting Area). Zumtobel has installed pureLiFi’s system, alongside its LED lights being exhibited at the Paris expo. The system enables data transmission via light at high-speeds through small adjustments in brightness. The result is a high-speed Internet connection that is more secure, reliable, and able to deliver bandwidth far beyond the capabilities of conventional wireless communications like Wi-Fi.

Im Zuge der neuen Partnerschaft kooperieren der österreichische Anbieter für ganzheitliche Lichtlösungen und der finnischen Hersteller von Echtzeit-Lokalisierungssysteme für eine kombinierte Asset-Tracking-Lösung. Angewendet etwa im Handel, im Industrieumfeld oder im Bürogebäude bietet sich ein Lokalisierungsdienst, der mittels Messen und Analysieren von Besucherströmen, Warenflüssen oder Laufwegen auch darin unterstützen soll, die Gesamtkosten zu senken. „Die Partnerschaft zwischen Zumtobel und Quuppa unterstreicht die strategische Bedeutung der Lichtindustrie im Bereich des Internets der Dinge und Asset Tracking“, sagt Thomas Hasselman, Chief Marketing Officer bei Quuppa.


Mit der Partnerschaft möchten Zumtobel und Quuppa die Installation und Nutzung von Indoor Location Services in Retail-, Office- und Industrie-Anwendungen vereinfachen.

Integriert wird künftig die intelligente Lokalisierungstechnik von Quuppa in die Zumtobel-Lichtinfrastruktur. Basierend auf einer Bluetooth-Low-Energy-Technologie können Objekte und Geräte nahezu in Echtzeit, mit einer Genauigkeit von unter einem Meter verfolgt werden. Durch die Möglichkeit eines kostengünstigeren Ausrüstens oder Nachrüstens von Zumtobel-Leuchten mit der neuen Asset-Tracking-Technologie sollen den Kunden künftig Vorteile in Planung, Kommissionierung und Wartung einer solchen kombinierten Infrastruktur entstehen, unterstreicht Tomasz Zareba, Director Digital Services bei Zumtobel. Dabei würden Anwender bei der Umsetzung von Location-Services-Projekte zugleich von dem Know-how des Vertriebs- und Digital-Services-Teams profitieren.


Mithilfe von integrierter Sensorik in Leuchten können Objekte mit einer Genauigkeit von unter einem Meter lokalisiert und verfolgt werden.

Bluetooth Low Energy Tags, die beispielsweise an Einkaufswägen angebracht sind oder Smartphones, die über die entsprechende App lokalisiert werden, erfassen Daten, welche für ortsbezogene Dienste und Anwendungen zur Verfügung stehen. So lassen sich im Handel beispielsweise Besucherströme oder die Kundenverweildauer in verschiedenen Warengruppen analysieren. Im Industrieumfeld wiederum ließen sich die Warenflüsse überwachen oder Lager-, Kommissionier- und Produktionsprozesse optimieren. Integriert als Lokalisierungsdienst in Bürogebäuden biete sich dazu eine Zugangskontrolle und Indoor-Navigation für Besucher, wodurch Raumnutzung, Nutzererfahrung und Betrieb des Gebäudes gesteigert werden könnten.

So ich bin nach zwischenzeitlichen Ausstieg wieder drin... die letzten Q.zahlen waren gut und ich kann mir vorstellen, dass die nächsten nicht schlechter sind , soviel Rückschlag nach unten wird es im
Worstcase nicht sein... Wir reden hier von einem Unternehmen mit 1 Mrd. Jahresumsatz und keiner
Bastelklitsche. Das Lichtgeschäft ist auch zukünftig Thema der Wirtschaft.

Von daher sehe ich hier auf 12 Monate ein Verdoppler - Potenzial! Nur meine Meinung, faktisch begründet mit meinem Bauchgefühl

das ist Eur 3,00 pro Papier, oder ein 50 % discount.
Der Titel hat vor 2 Wochen bei 5,15 nur 1 cent vor dem ATLow gedreht und nach einer langen Durststrecke einen halben Euro zugelegt. Zumtobel ist nicht unbedingt vom Gesamtmarkt abhängig.
