Do-it-yourself home renovations are going to soon regain popularity, which is good news for lumber companies.
Prices for wood have swung wildly in recent months as seemingly insatiable demand for home makeovers helped drive lumber prices to record highs — only to crash after the hikes reached consumers and sticker shock set in.
Now, people are spending money on activities like eating out and travel as economies reopen. That has hurt demand for lumber, but producers are saying it won’t last forever. When cold weather returns during the Northern Hemisphere’s autumn, stores will need to replenish stocks and consumers are expected to return to their home improvement projects with lower prices reflected on the shelf.
“There will be more work from home. I don’t think it’s the end of the repair and remodel section,” Remi Lalonde, chief executive officer of Montreal-based Resolute Forest Products Inc. said in a phone interview Thursday. Consumers are just “taking the summer off” after being cooped up during the pandemic.

Lumber futures rose, posting the biggest percentage gain in more than a year on concern that wildfires in western Canada will reduce supply and spur more curtailments at sawmills.
British Columbia, Canada’s biggest exporter of lumber to the U.S., declared a state of emergency, and Canfor Corp. said it would trim output as the fires snarl transportation and supply chains. Lumber jumped 7.7% in Chicago, the largest advance for a most-active contract since April 2020. The price is still more than 60% below the record-high reached in May.
The gain extends wild gyrations in lumber. Futures had surged in the past year on a pandemic-fueled construction boom, only to hit an eight-month low earlier this week after demand eased and supply was replenished. Further price increases may be held in check by rebuilt stockpiles and the slowdown in orders, analysts said.
Lumber for September delivery gained $42 to settle at $584 per thousand board feet on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
Rail transportation in British Columbia has been hindered since a June 30 fire damaged the tracks of the two main railways that carry goods to Vancouver for export, causing congestion at the port. Lines have since been repaired, but rail movement has been slow and sporadically halted due to fires.

Tumbling lumber prices are also “pieces of Canfor’s equation,” Wilde said, noting the steep two-month collapse in pricing as do-it-yourself renovation demand has dropped by a reported 40% at big-box retailers.
“At those levels, some B.C. mills may need a snorkel,” he said.
“After a year of ‘chasing inventory,’ the market is now struggling with bulging inventories at many mills in the U.S. and Canada,” he said.

Der Markt, in dem Svenska Cellulosa tätig ist erscheint mir unabhängig von aktuellen Tradingpositionen längerfristig sehr vielversprechend. Neben einem Trend hin zu nachhaltigen Rohstoffen stellt auch der Forstbesitz mit einer Fläche von 2,6 Mio Hektar einen grossen substantiellen Wert dar.

Just to back up for a second, Dean’s earlier argument was that the runup that we saw was a de facto short squeeze … that all of these lumber yards had made commitments to homebuilders, but then the market proved to be much more tight than they were expecting, forcing them to buy at any price in order to meet their obligations to customers.
I talked to him by phone this afternoon, and he says in the last few weeks there’s been a behavioral shift on the part of buyers that signals the squeeze is over.
"When I started seeing the industry buying, ahead of time for summer, that was kind of ahead of time for summer, that was a behavioral change,” he said. “That started happening the past four or five weeks… Folks changed their philosophy from just in time, hand to mouth, to anticipatory purchasing. Trying to get long."
Furthermore, you can see it in the futures, he notes. "Four or five weeks in a row, the CFTC report, showed commercial hedgers lifting shorts and adding longs,” said Dean
The bottom line is not that prices can’t go back up to their old highs, but that commercial players aren’t short anymore, either in terms of their inventory or their position in the futures market.
He called it a “complete change in behavior” from earlier this year, adding that “for the next five weeks, we’re going to see a lot of selling pressure.”
