Canaccord Genuity initiates coverage on SemiLEDs Corporation (NASDAQ: LEDS) with a Buy. PT $23.

Canaccord analyst says, "Given the IP risks outlined in this report (page 13-16) combined with the lack of history as a public company, we justify our valuation by applying an 18% discount to SemiLED’s main competitor, Cree (Nasdaq: CREE)...SemiLEDs is well positioned to benefit from the burgeoning SSL market in China. As a pure play on this secular trend, we believe the stock represents a good way for domestic-only funds to gain exposure to this opportunity."

"Based on our conversations with the Chinese Central Government, we believe
China is on the verge of announcing a national LED subsidy in its 12th fiveyear

LED Stocks Slide As SemiLEDs Whiffs Q2, Citing Price Pressures
      Apr. 5 2011 - 9:39 am | 0 views | 0 recommendations | 0 comments
Shares in the LED lighting sector are coming under selling pressure this morning following a disappointing earnings report by the Taiwan-based LED chip maker SemiLEDs (LEDS).

For the fiscal second quarter ended February 28, the company reported revenue of $9.96 million and a loss of 5 cents a share, well short of the Street consensus forecast of $11.2 million in revenue and a profit of 8 cents a share.

For FY Q3, the company is forecasting revenue of $6 million to $7 million and a loss of 7-10 cents a share, well shy of the previous Street forecast of $13.9 million in revenue and a profit of 14 cents a share.

What is particularly weighing on the stocks is the company’s commentary on the LED lighting sector. “While we believe the long term market opportunity of LEDs has not changed, the quarter did not meet our expectations relative to revenue, EPS or gross margin due to the aggressive, competitive pricing environment and our decision to preserve our market share,” CEO Trung Doan said in a statement.

No one wants to see “aggressive, competitive pricing.” Well, customers do. But shareholders don’t.

      Ergo, in this morning’s trading:

SemiLEDS is down $2.03, or 14%, to $12.43.
Cree (CREE) is down $2.49, or 5.5%, to $43.19.
Aixtron (AIXG) is down 65 cents, or 1.5%, to $44.23.
Veeco (VECO) is down 21 cents, or 0.4%, to $49.48.
Rubicon Technology (RBCN) is down 69 cents, or 2.5%, to $26.64.

China SemiLEDs aquires Novellus VECTOR LED system
      July 01, 2011
The highly productive PECVD system will be used for the manufacture of metal alloy III-V nitride based LED chips.

Novellus Systems, a maker of process equipment for semiconductor and LED manufacturing, has shipped a VECTOR plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) system to Xurui Guangdian (China SemiLEDs).

China SemiLEDs is a joint venture company in the People's Republic of China in which SemiLEDs Corporation, a leading manufacturer of high-brightness LEDs, is a partner. The VECTOR tool will be installed at the China SemiLEDs' plant in Foshan, China, and will be used for the manufacturing of SemiLEDs' MvpLED high-efficiency LED products.

SemiLEDs develops and manufactures metal alloy vertical LED chips in blue (white), green and UV using its MvpLED technology, which incorporates III-V nitride based layers. The company says this unique design allows for higher performance and longer lumen maintenance. SemiLEDs new high power I-core MvpLEDs can deliver over 120lm/W.

Cost-per-die and cost-per-lumen are critical factors in driving the adoption of LED technology into the mainstream lighting market. Current LED manufacturing technology is predominantly based on sapphire substrates in 2", 3" and 4" diameters. The inherently low-productivity manufacturing process used in making LEDs consumes a considerable amount of energy. On average, incredibly over 200 kWh of electricity is spent in making a 2" sapphire wafer.

The VECTOR system has leading process performance, a wide process window, and high productivity, a combination of factors which provides a lower manufacturing cost-per-die in comparison to traditional LED manufacturing solutions.

With a multi-wafer carrier configuration, the VECTOR LED system is capable of handling all wafer sizes -- 2", 3", 4", 6", 8" and 12" -- with exceptional throughput, film quality and uniformity at each size. In contrast to a traditional PECVD reactor used in LED manufacturing, the VECTOR LED also deposits films at lower temperatures, and is claimed to provide better manufacturing process control be more energy-efficient.

"The new VECTOR LED system is the LED manufacturing industry's most productive PECVD solution," said Sesha Varadarajan, senior vice president and general manager of Novellus' Electrofill and PECVD business units. "We are pleased to add VECTOR LED to the company's existing suite of products for LED manufacturing, including our process solutions for photoresist strip, descum, PVD, electroplating, and wafer polishing and thinning."

"In our continual effort to increase productivity and energy efficiencies, we will be placing the VECTOR LED system at China SemiLEDs' Foshan plant," said Marco Mora, general manager of China SemiLEDs. "Novellus' infrastructure and service capabilities in China made the selection of this vendor a very logical choice for China SemiLEDs."

SemiLEDs Reports Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year End 2011 Financial Results

HSINCHU, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- SemiLEDs Corporation (NASDAQ: LEDS), a developer and manufacturer of LED chips and LED components, today announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2011, ended August 31, 2011.

Revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 was $5.3 million, a 54% decrease from $11.5 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010.

GAAP net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 was $13.6 million, or a loss of $0.50 per diluted share, compared to GAAP net income attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders of $5.3 million, or $0.18 per diluted share, for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010. On a non-GAAP basis, net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 was $13.2 million, or a loss of $0.49 per diluted share, compared to non-GAAP net income attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders of $5.4 million, or $0.18 per diluted share, for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010.

"As expected, the market remained challenging in Asia for LED chips and components. The China market is not improving due to inflationary and monetary issues together with depressed economic conditions around the world. We continue to see pricing pressure due to the weak demand in the China outdoor street lighting market, together with the overcapacity of backlight that has spilled over to the general lighting market. The ASP erosion is not as extreme as in prior quarters and prices have stabilized somewhat," said Trung Doan, Chairman and CEO of SemiLEDs. "With so much uncertainty, we remain cautious in our near term outlook but continue to believe in the industry's long term market opportunities. When the Chinese government releases funds for the five year plan, we expect to benefit given that we are one of the few companies that meets the program's requirements and that we have local presence with our JV, China SemiLEDs," continued Doan.

Revenue for the fiscal year end 2011 was $33.9 million, a 5.2% decrease compared to $35.8 million for the fiscal year end 2010. GAAP net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders for the fiscal year 2011 was $16.1 million, or a loss of $0.88 per diluted share, compared to GAAP net income attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders of $10.8 million, or $0.24 per diluted share, for the fiscal year 2010.

On a non-GAAP basis, net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders for the fiscal year 2011 was $14.3 million, or a loss of $0.79 per diluted share, compared to non-GAAP net income attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders of $11.0 million, or $0.25 per diluted share, for the fiscal year 2010.

GAAP gross margin for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 was negative 93%, compared with 53% in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010. Operating margin for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 was negative 228%, compared with 42% in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010. Margins were negatively impacted by a charge of $4.3 million for the write-downs of inventory and a charge of $1.1 million for bad debt reserve.

The Company's cash and cash equivalents was $83.6 million at the end of the fourth quarter, compared to the prior quarter ending balance of $94.4 million. Cash used in operations was $2.0 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011.

      Financial Outlook

For its first quarter of fiscal 2012 ending November 30, 2011, SemiLEDs expects revenue in a range of $6.0 million to $7.0 million with GAAP net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders of $8.5 million to $8.0 million, or a loss of $0.31 to $0.29 per diluted share, based on an estimated 27.3 million diluted weighted average shares. GAAP gross margin is expected to be negative.

SemiLEDs’ S35 LED passes LM-80 test via Integrated Service Technology

LED chip and component maker SemiLEDs Corp of Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan says that, in cooperation with Hsinchu-based lab services firm Integrated System Technology Inc (IST), its S35 product line has completed the requirements of the stringent 6000 hour lumen maintenance test (LM-80) and that the results showed an extrapolated lifetime of up to 50,000 hours.

SemiLEDs claims that its S35 series is the first product to pass the third-party LM-80 test in Taiwan since IST received accreditation from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Results for further products, including the newly launched C35 family, will follow. SemiLEDs claims to be one of the few packaging firms in the Asian market to have passed the test on a certified third-party basis.

“LED components are sensitive to heat, and most failures in lighting fixtures involve thermal mistreatment,” says Kevin Tsui, VP of IST’s Reliability Engineering Department. “Therefore, verifying the degradation at various temperatures is very critical,” he adds.

Tsui further explains that LM-80 is required by US Energy Star and involves the collection of data based on three different case temperatures for at least 6000 hours. The lumen maintenance requirement is also defined. The test provides standardized quality assurance and quality certification for lighting fixture manufacturers and LED manufacturers, respectively.

SemiLEDs’ CEO Trung Doan states that the S35 and P2 warm- and cool-white LEDs (with color temperatures of 5700K and 3000K, respectively) were the firm’s first series to go through the 6000 hour tests at both 350 and 700mA currents. The test results from IST showed that lumen maintenance is 98.75% and 97.81% for 55°C and 85°C, respectively, for the 3000K emitter at 700mA drive current, far above the LM-80 requirements of 91.8% for domestic indoor applications and 94.1% for domestic outdoor and commercial usage.

SemiLEDs further explains that providing high-quality components to lighting fixture manufacturers is key to enabling quicker penetration of LEDs into the lighting market.

The S35 is SemiLEDs’ first series of emitters with a 35mm x 35mm footprint using a silicon housing material. The firm launched the C35 – the second generation of its 35mm x 35mm emitters – in June. The C35 incorporates SemiLEDs EV LED chip and a ceramic base. The thermal resistance complements SemiLEDs’ vertical chip on metal alloy substrate technology. Besides thermal management, SemiLEDs has also implemented its latest innovation in phosphor technology (‘Color Precision’ binning) to it C35 product family, allowing customers to be in control of their CCT distribution. The firm says that, with the new technology, consistent color can be produced within a single 7-step, 4-step or 2-step MacAdam Ellipse centered in ANSI-defined standard color spaces.

“Being a certified test lab, IST showed its professionalism and provided all the necessary assistance for us to verify our performance,” says Doan. “We look forward to further cooperation for new products in the pipeline.”
IST’s chief operating officer Jandel Lin notes that its LM-80 lab started up at the end of 2011 and has already been commissioned by more than 20 manufacturers to conduct the test. SemiLEDs’ S35 is first to pass the test at IST’s lab, and the results should significantly increase SemiLEDs’ marketing competitiveness in terms of quality, he reckons.

IST’s chief financial officer Selina Lin says that, at the beginning of this month, IST signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Intertek HK as the reporting body, and that it aims to continue strengthening its LED certification platform.

Was sagt ihr? Ist hier einer an Board?
