LED makers look to 20-30% sequential revenue growth in 2Q11

Siu Han, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Friday 1 April 2011]

Taiwan-based LED chip makers Formosa Epitaxy and Epistar expect their second-quarter 2011 revenues to grow 20-30% on quarter, while LED packaging houses Everlight Electronics and Unity Opto Technology look to sequential growth of about 30%, according to industry sources.

Although Formosa Epitaxy saw sapphire substrate costs decrease slightly in the first quarter, its quotes for LED chips have dropped more, and therefore its gross margin for the quarter may slip to below 20%, the sources indicated. Mainly because of expected peak sales of notebooks during the early May Labor Day vacation in the China market, Formosa Epitaxy will see increased shipments of LED chips used to make backlight units, and therefore revenues for the second quarter will hike 20-30% sequentially to NT$1.3-1.4 billion (US$44.0-47.5 million), the sources said.

Epistar has received orders with shipments scheduled for April-May and current utilization of its blue LED capacity is 20-30% higher than in January-February, the sources noted.

Everlight's overall utilization has risen to about 80%, while Unity Opto has seen increasing orders for LED backlight units for LCD TVs as well as T5 and T8 LED light tubes, the sources indicated.

Everlight expects continuous ASP drop in 2H12
Siu Han, Taipei; Jackie Chang, DIGITIMES [Monday 3 September 2012]

Rising price competition and negative impact from the debt crisis in Europe have been causing Taiwan-based LED firms to report on-year decreases in their financial results for first-half 2012. According to LED packaging house Everlight, ASPs in the LED market in first-half 2012 fell by double-digit basis points. Everlight's ASP also fell by 10% in the first half of the year, but the firm expects the price fall to ease in the second half, at around 5%.

The firm reported that second-quarter 2012 revenues saw a 13.5% sequential increase and capacity utilization rate was close to 80%. In the second quarter, Everlight saw net profits reach NT$235 million (US$7.89 million), an on-quarter increase of 179%. According to Pang-Yen Liu, Production Business Group GM and spokesperson for Everlight, the firm expects financial performance in the third quarter to be better than the second as the backlight and lighting markets enter the traditional boom season.

In the first half of the year, Everlight had an average gross margin of 22.01%, lower than the gross margin of 25% in the same period in 2011. Due to relocation of its headquarters and amortization at older plants, operating expenses increased by NT$52 million in the first half. Also, losses incurred from investments in LED chipmakers caused net profits in the first half to be NT$313 million, down 64.7% on year, and EPS at NT$0.75, a figure that was significantly lower than the NT$2.05/share in first-half 2011.

Revenues from mobile phone and consumer electronics applications accounted for 51% of total revenues in the first half of 2011. However, in 2012, the figure dropped to 49%. Nevertheless, with increasing penetration of LED TVs, revenues from backlight units (BLUs) in first-half 2012 increased to 19% from 16% in 2011. Revenues from lighting dropped to 8% in 2012 from 9% in 2011. The remaining 24% of total first-half revenues were from applications such as billboards and automobiles.

Liu believes the growth rate of the LED lighting market will continue to accelerate as the price of light bulbs from various brands has been dropping to US$10/unit and will continue to drop further in second-half 2012. Hence, the sweet spot of LED light bulb prices in 2013 is expected to be lower than previously forecast.

Liu added that in the future, Everlight will push both building its brand and increasing the percentage of OEM orders as its business model. However, revenues from LED lighting in the first half of the year were mainly from own-brand products, hence Everlight will continue to expand its distribution channels, develop large-size corporate clients and enter government project bids. Revenues from LED lighting are to account for more than 10% of total 2012 revenues, Everlight stated.

Despite the fact that revenue growth in the first half of the year was mainly from backlight products due to increasing penetration rate of LED TVs, side-lit models are still the mainstream, said Liu, and shipments of BLUs for direct-lit LED TVs have not increased significantly.

Liu explained that development of direct-lit LED TVs was curbed due to problems with patents and lens supply in the first half of the year. With increasing brightness efficiency and the release of new models with larger sizes, Everlight expects shipments of direct-lit LED TVs to increase in second-half 2012.

The third quarter has been seen as a boom season for BLUs as notebook firms are likely to increase orders for new models. Everlight expects revenues of backlight products to account for 20% of total 2012 revenues.

Jury Finds Nichia's LED Patents Invalid In Win For Everlight
      By Kurt Orzeck

Law360, Los Angeles (April 22, 2015, 11:25 PM ET) -- A Michigan federal jury on Wednesday unanimously found two LED patents owned by Nichia Corp. to be invalid due to obviousness, marking a major win for rival Everlight Electronics Co. Ltd. in the companies’ long-running, sprawling patent-infringement dispute.

While the jurors said Everlight hadn’t sufficiently shown that claims in U.S. Patent No. 5,998,925 were invalid due to anticipation or lack of enablement, they said the company had provided enough evidence that claims in the patent were invalid due to obviousness. The jury also said Everlight sufficiently showed that claims in U.S. Patent No. 7,531,960 were invalid due to obviousness and lack of enablement.

Everlight brought suit in April 2012 seeking a court judgment of non-infringement and alleging its rival didn't perform certain experiments described in the '925 and '960 patents. Generally, the patents relate to the invention of light-emitting diodes using phosphors....

Nichia’s Patent Has Expired and EVERLIGHT’s Product Aren’t affected

      New Taipei City, Shulin – October 20, 2016 –

Nichia’s October 22 press release referred to a lawsuit filed by Nichia against EVERLIGHT’s distributor E&E Japan and customer Tachibana Eletech for infringing Nichia’s Japanese Patent No. 2780618 by selling EVERLIGHT’s 1254-15ASUBC/S400-X9(ELJ) and 7344-15ASUBC/S400-X9(ELJ) products. The patent is directed to the structure of blue LED chip. As for the Tokyo District Court’s finding, it should be noted that the patent has expired on November 6, 2013 and therefore no longer affects Everlight’s products.

EVERLIGHT will continue to devote in research and development in new products, materials and manufacturing process and to strengthen its intellectual property portfolio and products. EVERLIGHT respects intellectual property rights and will continue to advocate for the interest of its customers and shareholders.

Siu Han, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 11 January 2017]

A Germany court of appeal has upheld a ruling in favor of Japan-based Nichia's LED patent infringement case against Taiwan-based Everlight Electronics.

The Dusseldorf Court of Appeal ruled Nichia's YAG (concerning white LED) patent EP (European Union patent) 0 936 682 (DE 697 02 929) was infringed by Everlight and its Germany-based subsidiary Everlight Electronics Europe in six white LED product items available in the Germany market, according to Nichia.

The latest decision upheld the Dusseldorf District Court's ruling made on September 3, 2013 that the Taiwan-based LED packaging service provider had infringed Nichia's YAG patent. Everlight could still appeal to the German Federal Court of Justice.

In related news, Nichia in late December 2016 filed four patent infringement charges with the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The defendants in the four lawsuits are US LCD TV distributor TTE Technology, and its parent company, China-based LCD TV maker TCL Multimedia Technology Holdings; US LCD TV vendor Vizio; Lowe's Home Center, a US-based retailer of LED lighting and other products, and Lowe's affiliated US distributor L G Sourcing; Feit Electric Company, a US-based LED lighting maker and distributer.

In these lawsuits, Nichia asserts that defendants have infringed its US Patent No. 9,490,411. Nichia seeks an injunction prohibiting the defendants' sale and distribution of products involved in the infringement as well as damages.

Digitimes Research: Nichia tops LED packagers in 2016 revenue
Jessie Lin, DIGITIMES Research, Taipei [Wednesday 12 April 2017]

Japan-based Nichia generated revenues of US$2.423 billion from LED packaging in 2016, the highest among all LED packaging service providers around the world, according to Digitimes Research.

Taiwan-based Everlight Electronics ranked second with US$963.5 million, followed by South Korea-based Seoul Semiconductor with US$841.8 million, China-based MLS with US$800.2 million, Germany-based Osram Opto Semiconductors with US$787.6 million and South Korea-based LG Innotek with US$613.2 million, Digitimes Research indicated.

However, MLS and China-based Hongli Zhihui and Foshan Nationstar Optoelectronics recorded the highest on-year growths at 42.2%, 40.4% and 36.3% respectively in 2016 revenues, mainly due to their expanding production capacities, and mergers. In contrast, Japan-based Toyoda Gosei, LG Innotek and Nichia saw the highest on-year decreases of 44.3%, 11.5% and 9.8% respectively.
