The Department of Mines and Pacific Wildcat Resources Geology last week issued Cortec Mining Kenya – a subsidiary of with a licence to mine high grade niobium at Mrima Hill in Kwale County.

Niobium is a high value metal used to strengthen high performance steels and production of steel products such as aircraft turbine blades and vehicles. Cortec Mining said it would start small-scale mining by end of this year and set up a processing plant by end of next year.

David Anderson, Cortec Mining managing director, said the licence cleared way for the firm to start commercial exploration on the 142-hectare site on Mrima Hill. The firm was in 2007 issued with a licence to prospect and explore for the metal.

The 21-year licence would see Kenya tap into the fifth largest Niobium deposit globally. Kenya will be one of largest producers of niobium in Africa.

“We expect to begin small scale mining by the end of this year with the main mining commencing for the pilot plant, subject to financing, by the end of 2014,” said Anderson.

“Initially, we aim to produce 50 per cent niobium pentoxide concentrate. This concentrate itself can be sold as it is.”

He added that Cortec Mining plans to put up a niobium concentrate plant to process the resources, both in the Kwale district as well as in the area of Mombasa in the future.

The firm has already commissioned preliminary designs for a ferro-niobium, a product with a huge global market.

The firm’s initial plan is to process 750,000 tonnes of ore. This will produce high-grade Niobium concentrate for the next 15-16 years.

The resource in Kwale County is estimated to be worth about Sh250 billion but has remained untapped mostly owing to political interference as well as dissent with the local community.

Cortec Kenya is expected to pay the Government a three per cent royalty on the gross sales of niobium and five per cent for rare earth as per its obtained permit.

PACIFIC WILDCAT: CLOSES FIRST TRANCHE OF NON-BROKERED PRIVATE PLACEMENT

Pacific Wildcat Resources Corp. has closed the first tranche of its non-brokered private placement (see news release dated March 19, 2013). Tranche one of the financing included the issuance of 8,333,333 units at a purchase price of six cents for gross proceeds of $500,000. Each unit comprises one common share in the capital of the company and one-half of one non-transferable common share purchase warrant. Each whole warrant will entitle the holder thereof to purchase one additional common share of the company at an exercise price of 10 cents per warrant share for a period of 12 months from the closing date of the private placement.

In accordance with the Canadian securities legislation currently in effect, the securities issued pursuant to the financing will have a restricted hold period in Canada expiring on Aug. 2, 2013.

Kanadischen Firma Pacific Wildcat Resources (PAW) hat die Größe der Fläche geschnitten, wo es Bergbau für Niob in Kwale Grafschaft nach der Überprüfung seiner besonderen Lizenz.

In einer Kenya Gazette Mitteilung vom 7. März Kommissar Minen und Geologie Moses Masibo gab eine frische Lizenz für die Firma, die ihre Prospektion Bereich ausgeschnitten ist auf etwa 351,1 Hektar.

"Die (Regierungs-) re-Zuschüsse Cortec Mining Kenya Limited (PAW lokalen Tochtergesellschaft) eine spezielle Bergbau-Lizenz zu verpflichten Exploration und Bergbau-Operationen in Mrima Hill, Kwale County," liest Teil des gazette kündigen.

Die neue Lizenz hat die 351,1 Hektar Stück Land in 47 bestimmten Stellen in dem das Unternehmen führen wird seine Prospektion und Bergbau aufgeteilt.

§ 17 des Mining Act, unter denen die frischen Lizenz auch erteilt wurde signalisiert, dass die Regierung anderen Bedingungen, einschließlich ihrer Zeit, Arbeit, Mieten, Lizenzgebühren und Gebühren bewertet.

The Minister made this declaration when he carried out a familiarization tour of Kwale county where Illumenite,Rutile and Zircon are expected to be mined by the Base Titanium company as well as where Niobium and Rare Earth minerals are expected to be extracted by the Cortec Mining Kenya company. These minerals are used in pigment industry to make colours and stabilise paints as well as make ceramics and tiles.

At Base titanium the Minister announced that all hurdles which were holding the mining of the mineral had been surmounted and work was progressing on schedule. The 250 million dollar investment is expected to earn the country 150 million dollars each year in exports. It expects employ 350 Kenyans when in operation but take on 1000 during construction period expec ted to start next year to take 20 m0nths to finish and be in production by mid 2013.

Colin Bwye, the Executive Director in charge of Operations and Development of the parent company and Kenya’s General Manger Joe Schwarz said that the company would initially have 30 expatriates who would be scaled down to five through technology transfer to Kenyans.
