RIM’s Customers Working on Contingency Plans: Corporate Canada
Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) customers from GoDaddy Group Inc. to asset manager Thames River Capital UK Ltd. are preparing for the worst: the loss of the BlackBerry service their employees depend on to communicate.
RIM’s stock has slumped more than 70 percent in the past year, and tumbled 19 percent on June 29 after the company posted a quarterly loss and delayed the BlackBerry 10 operating system, increasing the pressure on RIM to find a buyer or sell assets. While RIM has built infrastructure to ensure continued service, some customers are devising backup plans as RIM prepares to face shareholders at its annual meeting tomorrow.
“In the past three months there’s been a lot of concern that the BlackBerry platform won’t be around in the future,” said Maribel Lopez, founder of Lopez Research, a wireless- industry consultant based in San Francisco. “It’s not unheard of for a large phone manufacturer to go out of business.”
Corporate customers, the backbone of RIM’s business, are fortifying contingency plans so they won’t be affected by a possible breakup of the BlackBerry-maker or other setbacks. With millions of employees connecting to the office through mobile e- mail, companies have been eager to establish a fallback or replacement plan, said Avi Greengart, a technology research director at Current Analysis.
Thames River Capital supplies about 140 of its 170 employees with smartphones, most of them BlackBerrys, said Robert Cockerill, head of infrastructure at the London-based money manager. With the delay of BlackBerry 10 and a service contract with RIM expiring this year, Cockerill said he expects much of his staff to switch to Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone or devices based on Google Inc.’s Android platform.
Service Disruption
Cockerill has brought in MobileIron Inc., a Mountain View, California-based developer of software that helps companies manage and protect data on mobile devices and tablets. MobileIron provides security for Thames River Capital including encryption and password protection for non-BlackBerry devices such as iPads, he said.
Thames River Capital is preparing for scenarios where BlackBerry service may be shut down, disrupted, or if a competitor such as Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) acquires RIM and converts the operating system to its Exchange e-mail service, he said.
“There is a risk of RIM getting bought,” Cockerill said in an interview. “But if you have the right support you can be agnostic and it won’t really matter.”
MobileIron Chief Executive Officer Bob Tinker said his customer list includes 100 Fortune 500 companies, and about a quarter of those customers are financial services firms.
Embrace Innovation
“Large enterprises don’t want to be locked in with a single vendor anymore,” Tinker said in an interview. Customers want to embrace all the innovation in mobile and RIM’s delay of BlackBerry 10 doesn’t help that, he said.
“CIO’s are now asking us: ‘What do we do if RIM gets acquired or if they restructure,”’ said Tinker.
Norton Rose LLP, a law firm with 6,000 BlackBerry-equipped employees, is using MobileIron’s software to support iPhones and iPads, which were given to some staff members as secondary devices, said Vlad Botic, group enterprise architect at the London-based firm.
Botic, who said Norton Rose would like to continue using BlackBerrys, began exploring alternatives last year after the three-day BlackBerry outage that caused users around the world to lose data services amid a network failure.
“RIM isn’t in a good position right now,” Botic said in an interview. “The problem with BlackBerry, which was highlighted when the service went down, was that the only way to solve it is with an entirely new device.”
‘Significant Outage’
While the chance of BlackBerry service getting shut down is slim, Botic said he has scheduled a meeting with RIM this week to seek assurances that there won’t be a disruption in the event of a takeover.
GoDaddy, an Internet domain-name and hosting company, could switch users to iPhone or Android devices “within hours,” said Auguste Goldman, chief infrastructure officer at the Scottsdale, Arizona-based company.
In the event of a “significant outage” for BlackBerry devices, GoDaddy has a plan to migrate users to other platforms, Goldman said in an interview.
“The BlackBerry infrastructure and services are among our most valuable assets,” said Nick Manning, a spokesman for Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM. “BlackBerry customers depend on our robust network and they can continue to depend on it going forward.”
iPhone, Android
Six staffers at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. first began planning for the possibility of a disruption in BlackBerry service last year. To prepare, Nationwide retained Good Technology Inc., whose software for servers and phones can provide secure corporate e-mail and calendar services to iPhones and Android devices.
“You could see that RIM started to decline,” Robert Burkhart, director of new technology innovation at Nationwide, said in an interview.
Today, the number of BlackBerrys Nationwide associates use is down to 7,000 from about 8,500 a year ago, while the number of non-BlackBerry devices used has risen from zero to 4,450, Burkhart said.
“We are well on our way to having a dual environment, so if RIM did go out, we’d be okay,” Burkhart said. “If people are starting contingency plans now, they are behind the eight ball. They should have been looking at this all along.”
Good Technology, which works with 4,000 corporate customers worldwide, including eight of the top 10 financial services companies, has seen an inflow of customers concerned about RIM’s prospects and making contingency plans.

“We’ve had two meetings this month with large financial services firms on this topic,” Brian Carr, senior vice president of worldwide sales at Sunnyvale, California-based Good Technology, said in an interview. “In the last year, I talked with half of Fortune 100 companies, and it’s a concern for all of them. Every single one of them is looking at contingency plans.”
The concerns are prompting many companies to speed up their transition from BlackBerries to other types of mobile devices, Carr said.
RIM has struggled to keep up with Apple’s iPhone and devices based on Google’s (GOOG) Android platform. Last month, RIM said it would cut 5,000 jobs and posted a quarterly loss that was five times bigger than projected. Sales last quarter plunged 43 percent as RIM’s share of the global smartphone industry fell by more than half to 6.4 percent in the first three months of the year, according to research firm IDC.
BlackBerry Migration
“RIM’s situation is dire, but even in a worst-case scenario, RIM’s servers aren’t likely to get turned off anytime soon,” said Current Analysis’s Greengart. “Still, IT managers are looking more seriously at alternatives to BlackBerry. There’s a whole industry ready to provide security and management around Apple and Android,” he said.
The migration from BlackBerrys started two years ago for Ken Lawonn, senior vice president of strategy and technology at Alegent Health, an Omaha, Nebraska-based health-care provider.
The shift was prompted by user preferences, rather than concerns about the future of RIM, said Lawonn who uses Good Technology’s software. The number of Alegent’s 300 smartphone users with BlackBerrys has shrunk to 10 percent from about 50 percent two years ago, he said.
“Should something occur, we believe that’s going to be a fairly easy transition,” Lawonn said. “If my BlackBerry broke down, I’d look at the options, and if a BlackBerry wasn’t available, I’d pick up an iPhone and be on my way.”

Research in Motion (RIMM) said in a Friday blog post that the BlackBerry App World has topped 3B downloads. The company notes that the number does not include apps downloaded from third party BlackBerry app stores, or those pushed internally at companies around the world, or those downloaded directly from the web.

Facebook, the largest social networking site and Amazon, largest online retail site are in talks with Research in Motion (RIM), the owner of the BlackBerry phone, the world’s largest push mail messaging system, to acquire its struggling phone business as efforts to resuscitate the platform continue to hit brick walls despite changes in management.
BlackBerry has struggled to cope with the new designs and feature smartphones from Apple’s iPhone stable and Google’s Android phones as traditional smartphones from Nokia and BlackBerry fail to compete in the market place. Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy S series tablets have also compounded BlackBerry woes.
Last month, RIM said it had enlisted JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to help it evaluate various financial strategies, including “opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives”.
RIM is considering a split of its operations and selling off its handset manufacturing side to either Amazon or Facebook. The struggling company would retain its email processing services. RIM had previously confirmed that it had hired advisors to develop a strategy to turn the company’s fortunes around and that such proposals could include a sale or lease of its technology assets.
Facebook has long been rumoured to be working on a mobile phone, and acquiring the BlackBerry manufacturing skills would help overcome reported difficulties the hardware services, mainly in the form of its Kindle ebook reader, but it is unclear software based company is having in moving to a hardware platform. Amazon has what benefit the company would gain from moving into the smartphone market.
The messaging platform may also be licensed to Google or Apple the newspaper report added. RIM will report its latest quarterly earnings (ended June 2) later this week. The firm has already warned it will post an operating loss with “lower volumes and highly competitive pricing dynamics in the marketplace” impacting the business.

RIM (NASDAQ: RIMM) had their annual shareholders meeting yesterday, and as you could imagine shareholders and executives weren’t roasting marshmallows and singing Kumbaya together.
There were some very unhappy investors and many felt that there should be a shakeup similar to what happened at CP Rail where the entire board was changed along with a complete shakeup. Though some investors voiced their opinion about RIM's board and the problems that the company is facing, all members of the board were re-elected though some withheld their votes as a sign of dissatisfaction with the board’s performance.
Those who have seen the company fall from over $100 a share to under $8 would be hard pressed to view any current board members who were with the company during their huge descent as capable. Though this could be very true, RIM is not a railroad ... it's a company in the midst of the most crucial product launch in its history. RIM needs to be doing what they are doing, which is slowly changing the old guard while continuing to attempt to innovate a new product launch and be able to successfully release it in a variety of markets on a variety of continents.
The shares recently plunged further after RIM announced layoffs and a delay in the release of BB 10 till the first quarter of 2013. During the meeting the company disclosed that a probable January launch for BB10 was in the works.
RIM shares plunged further after the meeting as reports surfaced those investors were still unhappy with the company and the direction it is choosing to take. I find this particularly strange as RIM has done everything that traditionally one would expect form a company attempting a turnaround. They have reduced expenses, they have changed management and they have delayed a product launch so as to be able to improve the product and not have it rushed to market.
It seems the only news that the market will positively react to concerning RIM is a potential breakup of the company and sale of the parts or a takeover by a cash-rich tech giant. Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) paid $12.5 billion for Motorola Mobility, which at the time was over a 60% premium to what the shares were trading at. Google’s android OS has been adopted by several major handset makers and has grabbed a major piece of the mobile pie. Google is more interested in being the mobile search gateway for users as it has become the premier gateway to find stuff in the traditional internet. We sometimes forget that though Google has come out with a lot of cool products and services most of its revenues come from ads. Google’s mobile play is in its essence an attempt to improve its potential revenue in the mobile ad space.
Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) has its successful future strongly tied to how it can monetize the growth of its mobile user base. After its IPO it is flush with cash and has been courting the idea of getting into the mobile handset market. Investors see this as a savior for RIM and a way to recoup some of the lost equity many long-time investors have suffered. That will arrive much sooner than an outright bankruptcy, regardless of how steadfast management is today at focusing on a turnaround.
Can RIM be saved? Regardless of the answer, I strongly think it is worth much more then it is trading at now even with all the potential negative outcomes priced into the stock. RIM has over $2 billion in cash and earns over $4 billion just on licensing fees from mobile providers. Its market cap has dipped under $4 billion, which to me makes absolutely no sense.
Regardless of what happens the company can sell its parts or itself in a complete sale for triple that amount easily. I bought into RIM when the shares were in the low $20s and have seen my investment lose over 70% of its value. I have written several blogs about RIM and my perceived exaggeration of the market on how bad things are at RIM. When the stock dipped below $8, I took this opportunity to double up on my investment and put my money where my mouth is, so to speak. I was able to reduce my overall buy-in on RIM to $12 a share.
I strongly think that the market has overreacted to RIM and its prospects and see it being worth at least $15 a share in the next year to a year and a half. Whether RIM accomplishes the turn around, is sold to the highest bidder in parts or as a whole it will be worth much more than $7 a share. This is my opinion, which I fully understand is not shared by many, but as honesty is the Foolish way, I felt that I should put this down in writing.

$RIMM: Spike iPhone Case Comes With A Physical Keyboard

For iPhone detractors, the lack of a physical keypad on the device has long been a rallying cry against the top-selling smartphone.
But Cody and Robert Solomon, the father and son co-founders of SoloMatrix, are hoping their "Spike" iPhone case and keyboard hybrid will change that for good. The product may force BlackBerry users everywhere to take a second look at the iPhone.
While Spike is hardly the first attempt at creating a physical keyboard for the iPhone, an Amazon search for similar products reveals many of them to be clumsy creations with lousy reviews. But unlike other iPhone keyboards, Spike doesn't need Bluetooth, a power source or a dock connection. It's not a standalone item, but an attempt to work the keyboard into the physical body of the iPhone, within a protective case.
The Solomons are currently fundraising on Kickstarter to try and bring the Spike case to life in two versions, Spike 1 and Spike 2. Spike 1 is a case with the physical keyboard stationed on the back. The case splits in two, so when users want to type, they can split that bottom half and reverse it so the keyboard faces the front. Spike 2 features a 360-degree hinge that tucks into the back of the phone case, making both access to and hiding of the keyboard a bit easier. Both Spikes would allow users to type with gloves on, a feature currently unavailable when using the iPhone's own touchscreen. The Spike 1 will retail for $35, while the Spike 2 will retail for $60.
The development of Spike was aided by Robert Solomon's work with keyboards for more than 25 years. In the Kickstarter video, he talks about working with Datadesk Technologies, which helped to develop and manufacture some of the first keyboards for Macintosh. At SoloMatrix, both Solomons have spent two years developing and attempting to obtain a patent for the TypeSmart technology that's behind Spike.

For iPhone detractors, the lack of a physical keypad on the device has long been a rallying cry against the top-selling smartphone.
But Cody and Robert Solomon, the father and son co-founders of SoloMatrix, are hoping their "Spike" iPhone case and keyboard hybrid will change that for good. The product may force BlackBerry users everywhere to take a second look at the iPhone.
While Spike is hardly the first attempt at creating a physical keyboard for the iPhone, an Amazon search for similar products reveals many of them to be clumsy creations with lousy reviews. But unlike other iPhone keyboards, Spike doesn't need Bluetooth, a power source or a dock connection. It's not a standalone item, but an attempt to work the keyboard into the physical body of the iPhone, within a protective case.
The Solomons are currently fundraising on Kickstarter to try and bring the Spike case to life in two versions, Spike 1 and Spike 2. Spike 1 is a case with the physical keyboard stationed on the back. The case splits in two, so when users want to type, they can split that bottom half and reverse it so the keyboard faces the front. Spike 2 features a 360-degree hinge that tucks into the back of the phone case, making both access to and hiding of the keyboard a bit easier. Both Spikes would allow users to type with gloves on, a feature currently unavailable when using the iPhone's own touchscreen. The Spike 1 will retail for $35, while the Spike 2 will retail for $60.
The development of Spike was aided by Robert Solomon's work with keyboards for more than 25 years. In the Kickstarter video, he talks about working with Datadesk Technologies, which helped to develop and manufacture some of the first keyboards for Macintosh. At SoloMatrix, both Solomons have spent two years developing and attempting to obtain a patent for the TypeSmart technology that's behind Spike.

Inhaltlich ist aber doch klar, dass die alten Produkte EWIG Verluste produzieren werden. Ist ja nett, wenn man 200 Mio USD weniger verloren hat als erwartet. Die Überlebensdauer wird verlängert. Aber ist das 20% mehr wert???
Experten: Habt ihr mal eine Rechnung angestellt, wieviele RIM10-Phonse verkauft werden müssen, damit der Laden wieder profitabel wird??? Werden die RIM Lumia schlagen können? Ich bin mir sicher, dass die alten Geschäftskunden die neue RIM-Serie annehmen werden. Die Infrastruktur ist ja da. Die Frage ist meiner Meinung nach aber: Reicht das für den Turnaround????

Ein anderer positiver Punkt für RIM ist die Übernahme. Das Volumen kann eine Technikfirma locker stemmen. Und RIM ist fokussiert auf Geschäftskunden und Smart-Phone.
Bei Nokia hingegen kauft man den riesigen Massenmarkt von Symbian-Phones, bei denen die Margen schrumpfen werden. Auch die Inder wollen lieber ein Smart-Phone als so ein Daddel-Handy zu 19 EURO. Klar werden die gebraucht. Aber viel verdienen kann man da nicht mehr. Und die ganzen Investitionen der Vergangenheit werden hohe Abschreibungen benötigen, wenn die Fabriken geschlossen werden.
Gefahr sehe ich durch Kleinweich. Die sind ja im Geschäftsereich aktiv und das Betriebssystem läuft dann auf dem Bürorechner und dem Lumia-Phone. Microsoft hat da gute Karten, Nokia ist nur ein Me-Too-Produzent.
Wenn also auch am Geschäftskundenanteil bei RIM gehnabbert wird, dann wird es böse....

Ja, ist wirklich ruhig um RIMM und eigentlich ein großer Name. Es werden sicherlich auch Businesskunden abspringen, weil ganz klar die Nachfrage aus der Belegschaft auch über den Consumer Markt getrieben wird.
Habe mich bei Nokia und RIMM positioniert und spekuliere auf einen Turnaround bei einem oder der beiden. ;-)

Es springen Nokia und RIM an, beide sind in unterschiedlichen Marktnischen, was nicht stört. Außer Apple kann sich die übertriebene Marktabschottung per Gericht jetzt schenken und sollte seine Gewinne lieber schonen. Die hohen Preise sind wohl bald nicht mehr zu halten.

Mit dem QNX-basierenden Mobile-Betriebssystem Blackberry 10 versucht Research in Motion Boden gegenüber Android und iOS gut machen. Die COMPUTERWOCHE hatte die Gelegenheit, sich eine noch nicht ganz endgültige Version der Software auf einem Entwicklungsgerät anzusehen.
Ähnlich wie Microsoft mit Windows Phone will auch RIM mit der Neuauflage des Blackberry-OS alte Zöpfe abschneiden. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf bislang eher von Android und iOS bekannte Eigenschaften, die mit einem einfachen Update des alten Blackberry-Betriebssystems kaum mehr zu bewerkstelligen waren, wie etwa weniger Komplexität, eine bessere Touch-Steuerung und allgemein eine einfache, fast intuitive Bedienung. Gleichzeitig bemühen sich die Kanadier, natürlich auch die hehren Business-Tugenden, für die Blackberry nach wie vor steht, nicht aus den Augen zu verlieren.
Was zunächst als Kreuzung zwischen iPhone und eierlegender Wollmilchsau klingt, glaubt RIM nun gefunden zu haben – wenngleich sich der Launch-Termin mit dem 30. Januar 2013 allerdings deutlich nach hinten verschoben hat. Auch wenn es nach wie vor schwer ist, überhaupt aussagekräftige Bilder des neuen Systems zu bekommen, hatte die COMPUTERWOCHE die Gelegenheit, sich selbst einen Eindruck von Blackberry 10 am lebenden Objekt, kryptisch Dev Alpha B genannt, zu verschaffen. Die Eindrücke wollen wir Ihnen natürlich nicht vorenthalten:
Flow, Glance und Peek
Der Einstieg zu Blackberry 10 erfolgt über einen Lockscreen, auf dem sich - abgesehen vom Hintergrundbild - fast verloren – nur Datum, Uhrzeit sowie Informationen über eingegangene Mails befinden. Hier muss man allerdings einschieben, dass laut RIM beim User Interface das letzte Wort noch nicht gesprochen ist. Nach dem Hochziehen gelangt man zum Hauptmenü. Dieser umfasst zum einen eine Seite mit den aktiven Apps/Panels – am besten mit der Darstellung auf dem Blackberry Playbook zu vergleichen. Auf den Seiten rechts davon werden – ähnlich wie bei Android oder iOS – die installierten Apps mit Icons aufgeführt. Wischt man in die andere Richtung, landet man auf dem Blackberry Hub: dieser wesentliche Bestandteil von Blackberry 10 stellt eine Art Kommunikationszentrale dar, in der eingegangene Mails, Anrufe, SMS, Mitteilungen via BBM, Kalendereinträge, aber auch Status-Updates aus sozialen Netzen aufgeführt sind. Wie RIM-Manager Ulrich Brünger bei der Vorstellung erklärte, können künftig auch Drittanbieter via APIs ihre Anwendungen in den Blackberry Hub integrieren. Weitere Details über das dazugehörige Procedere konnte er allerdings nicht liefern.
Apropos Apps: Wie das eng verwandte Playbook-Betriebssystem unterstützt auch Blackberry 10 angepasste Android-Apps – wenn sie vom Entwickler entsprechend präpariert und eingestellt wurden. Da es in Sachen Usability und Funktionen Unterschied zu nativen Apps gibt, wirbt RIM natürlich fleißig um Entwickler. Die Gesamtzahl ist dabei – zumindest für die Kanadier – sekundär, bis zum Start will RIM aber für alle Länder die jeweiligen Top50-Apps anbieten – teilweise wird hier auch mit Kooperationen nachgeholfen.
Auf Daumenbedienung getrimmt
Generell hat RIM das Bedienkonzept von Blackberry 10 nicht nur stark auf Eine-Hand- sondern sogar auf Ein-Finger-(Daumen-) Bedienung ausgelegt. Dazu tragen verschiedene Gesten bei, die unter dem Begriff „Flow“ zusammengefasst sind und eine nahtlose Navigation durch geöffnete Anwendungen (Glance) und den Blackberry Hub ermöglichen sollen. Wie RIM-Manager Brünger erläutert, wolle seine Company das Paradigma aufbrechen, dass man von einer App rausgehen und in die andere reingehen müsse. Dies wird unter anderem mit Peek bewerkstelligt, so bezeichnen die Kanadier in Blackberry 10 die Möglichkeit eine geöffnete App mit einer Wischbewegung zu verkleinern, um schnell in andere Anwendungen zu wechseln. Dies ist beispielsweise praktisch, um eine eingegangene Mail einzusehen. Beim neuen Browser wiederum befindet sich das Feld für URL-Zeile nicht wie gewohnt oben, sondern unten, wo der Daumen sitzt.
Dieses ist aber nur ein Feature des neu entwickelten Browser. So gibt es etwa eine Lesefunktion, in der Bilder und Werbung aus der Darstellung entfernt wurden und der Nutzer nur den Volltext einer Website angezeigt bekommt. Wie RIM unlängst bekannt gab, hat der Blackberry-10-Browser außerdem den HTML5-Test Ringmark mit 484 Punkten bravourös bestanden. Zwar ist dies angesichts der Tatsache, dass der Browser selbst auf HTML5 basiert, kein Wunder – Fakt ist allerdings, dass er damit die Konkurrenten Android und iPhone um Längen schlägt.
Bereits bekannt und vielfach beschrieben ist die neue virtuelle Tastatur. Sie unterstützt die Nutzung von drei Sprachen gleichzeitig, lernt Vokabeln und macht darauf basierend während des Tippens Wortvorschläge. Diese werden diese bei der Texteingabe direkt über dem nächsten potenziellen Buchstaben eingeblendet und können so schnell mit einer Wischgeste nach oben verwendet werden. Dies soll ermöglichen, dass der Schreibfluss nicht unterbrochen wird. RIM verweist in diesem Zusammenhang auf eine Untersuchung, wonach die Tippgeschwindigkeit dank dieser Technik um bis zu zwei Drittel reduziert wird. Inwieweit dies auch für die Eingabe in Deutsch gilt, wo häufig nur die Wortendung variiert, sei dahingestellt. Möglicherweise sind hier sogar Anwendungen wie bei Android, wo mehrere Vorschläge oberhalb der Tastatur eingeblendet werden, im Vorteil. Mit dem QNX-basierenden Mobile-Betriebssystem Blackberry 10 versucht Research in Motion Boden gegenüber Android und iOS gut machen. Die COMPUTERWOCHE hatte die Gelegenheit, sich eine noch nicht ganz endgültige Version der Software auf einem Entwicklungsgerät anzusehen.
Ähnlich wie Microsoft mit Windows Phone will auch RIM mit der Neuauflage des Blackberry-OS alte Zöpfe abschneiden. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf bislang eher von Android und iOS bekannte Eigenschaften, die mit einem einfachen Update des alten Blackberry-Betriebssystems kaum mehr zu bewerkstelligen waren, wie etwa weniger Komplexität, eine bessere Touch-Steuerung und allgemein eine einfache, fast intuitive Bedienung. Gleichzeitig bemühen sich die Kanadier, natürlich auch die hehren Business-Tugenden, für die Blackberry nach wie vor steht, nicht aus den Augen zu verlieren.
Was zunächst als Kreuzung zwischen iPhone und eierlegender Wollmilchsau klingt, glaubt RIM nun gefunden zu haben – wenngleich sich der Launch-Termin mit dem 30. Januar 2013 allerdings deutlich nach hinten verschoben hat. Auch wenn es nach wie vor schwer ist, überhaupt aussagekräftige Bilder des neuen Systems zu bekommen, hatte die COMPUTERWOCHE die Gelegenheit, sich selbst einen Eindruck von Blackberry 10 am lebenden Objekt, kryptisch Dev Alpha B genannt, zu verschaffen. Die Eindrücke wollen wir Ihnen natürlich nicht vorenthalten:
Flow, Glance und Peek
Der Einstieg zu Blackberry 10 erfolgt über einen Lockscreen, auf dem sich - abgesehen vom Hintergrundbild - fast verloren – nur Datum, Uhrzeit sowie Informationen über eingegangene Mails befinden. Hier muss man allerdings einschieben, dass laut RIM beim User Interface das letzte Wort noch nicht gesprochen ist. Nach dem Hochziehen gelangt man zum Hauptmenü. Dieser umfasst zum einen eine Seite mit den aktiven Apps/Panels – am besten mit der Darstellung auf dem Blackberry Playbook zu vergleichen. Auf den Seiten rechts davon werden – ähnlich wie bei Android oder iOS – die installierten Apps mit Icons aufgeführt. Wischt man in die andere Richtung, landet man auf dem Blackberry Hub: dieser wesentliche Bestandteil von Blackberry 10 stellt eine Art Kommunikationszentrale dar, in der eingegangene Mails, Anrufe, SMS, Mitteilungen via BBM, Kalendereinträge, aber auch Status-Updates aus sozialen Netzen aufgeführt sind. Wie RIM-Manager Ulrich Brünger bei der Vorstellung erklärte, können künftig auch Drittanbieter via APIs ihre Anwendungen in den Blackberry Hub integrieren. Weitere Details über das dazugehörige Procedere konnte er allerdings nicht liefern.
Apropos Apps: Wie das eng verwandte Playbook-Betriebssystem unterstützt auch Blackberry 10 angepasste Android-Apps – wenn sie vom Entwickler entsprechend präpariert und eingestellt wurden. Da es in Sachen Usability und Funktionen Unterschied zu nativen Apps gibt, wirbt RIM natürlich fleißig um Entwickler. Die Gesamtzahl ist dabei – zumindest für die Kanadier – sekundär, bis zum Start will RIM aber für alle Länder die jeweiligen Top50-Apps anbieten – teilweise wird hier auch mit Kooperationen nachgeholfen.
Auf Daumenbedienung getrimmt
Generell hat RIM das Bedienkonzept von Blackberry 10 nicht nur stark auf Eine-Hand- sondern sogar auf Ein-Finger-(Daumen-) Bedienung ausgelegt. Dazu tragen verschiedene Gesten bei, die unter dem Begriff „Flow“ zusammengefasst sind und eine nahtlose Navigation durch geöffnete Anwendungen (Glance) und den Blackberry Hub ermöglichen sollen. Wie RIM-Manager Brünger erläutert, wolle seine Company das Paradigma aufbrechen, dass man von einer App rausgehen und in die andere reingehen müsse. Dies wird unter anderem mit Peek bewerkstelligt, so bezeichnen die Kanadier in Blackberry 10 die Möglichkeit eine geöffnete App mit einer Wischbewegung zu verkleinern, um schnell in andere Anwendungen zu wechseln. Dies ist beispielsweise praktisch, um eine eingegangene Mail einzusehen. Beim neuen Browser wiederum befindet sich das Feld für URL-Zeile nicht wie gewohnt oben, sondern unten, wo der Daumen sitzt.
Dieses ist aber nur ein Feature des neu entwickelten Browser. So gibt es etwa eine Lesefunktion, in der Bilder und Werbung aus der Darstellung entfernt wurden und der Nutzer nur den Volltext einer Website angezeigt bekommt. Wie RIM unlängst bekannt gab, hat der Blackberry-10-Browser außerdem den HTML5-Test Ringmark mit 484 Punkten bravourös bestanden. Zwar ist dies angesichts der Tatsache, dass der Browser selbst auf HTML5 basiert, kein Wunder – Fakt ist allerdings, dass er damit die Konkurrenten Android und iPhone um Längen schlägt.
Bereits bekannt und vielfach beschrieben ist die neue virtuelle Tastatur. Sie unterstützt die Nutzung von drei Sprachen gleichzeitig, lernt Vokabeln und macht darauf basierend während des Tippens Wortvorschläge. Diese werden diese bei der Texteingabe direkt über dem nächsten potenziellen Buchstaben eingeblendet und können so schnell mit einer Wischgeste nach oben verwendet werden. Dies soll ermöglichen, dass der Schreibfluss nicht unterbrochen wird. RIM verweist in diesem Zusammenhang auf eine Untersuchung, wonach die Tippgeschwindigkeit dank dieser Technik um bis zu zwei Drittel reduziert wird. Inwieweit dies auch für die Eingabe in Deutsch gilt, wo häufig nur die Wortendung variiert, sei dahingestellt. Möglicherweise sind hier sogar Anwendungen wie bei Android, wo mehrere Vorschläge oberhalb der Tastatur eingeblendet werden, im Vorteil. Welche Meinungen gibt es hinsichtlich der wieder aufkommenden Übernahmegerüchte? Hatten wir ja schon vor ein paar Monaten schon mal. Ich finde es interessant welche Entwicklungen hier so passieren (könnten) je näher der 30. Jänner kommt

Heute haben die Börsen in den USA geschlossen. In Kanada sind bisher über 3 Mio. Aktien gehandelt worden. Außerbörslich ist der Kurs in D hauchdünn unter 9€ inzwischen. Die Börse in Frankfurt zieht etwas zögerlicher nach.

Der Umsatz in dem am 1. Dezember abgeschlossenen dritten Geschäftsquartal übertraf mit knapp 2,73 Milliarden Dollar sogar etwas die Erwartungen der Analysten. Verglichen mit dem Vorjahresquartal bedeutete das einen Einbruch von 47,2 Prozent. Gemessen am Vierteljahr direkt davor war das Minus mit 4,6 Prozent deutlich moderater.
Durststrecke noch 1 Monat, dann kommen die neuen Produkte. Das wird dann 2 - 3 Monate brauchen um Absatzzahlen zu sehen. Es sollen 2 Produkte kommen, von denen bisher nur 1 Smartphone im Internet zu sehen war. Siehe vergangenen Threats hier.

RIM could have a little more cash on hand next quarter. The flailing BlackBerry developer has sold its cloud services unit NewBay to Synchronoss Technologies, the provider of automation software, mobility management, and cloud technology solutions. The acquisition price was $55.5 million in cash, and the transaction closed in the fourth quarter of 2012.
It was a short-lived acquisition for RIM, which bought NewBay in October 2011 for $100 million and took a bit of a bath. In August, Reuters reported that RIM was looking to sell NewBay.
NewBay’s cloud software enables mobile operators and service providers to allow its users to store, share and access content (i.e. video, photos, music) across connected devices such as smartphones, tablets, PCs and TVs. The company’s technology platform empowers customers to deliver user content services such as social networking, digital vault, photo and video albums, network address book, notification and converged messaging services.
The company’s software was used by Orange, Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile, Telefonica, AT&T and Verizon. According to a release, NewBay’s cloud services are delivered to millions of users and store billions of media files for operator services around the world.
RIM just reported earnings last week, barely scraping by analyst expectations.

Die Kamera macht ganz ausgezeichnete Bilder und schlägt auch bei schlechtem Licht sowohl das Lumia 920 als auch das iPhone 5 glatt. Hier zunächst ein Video bei Nacht.

RIM Receives Approval from Visa for Mobile Payment Solution
WATERLOO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 01/16/13 -- Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM)(TSX: RIM) today announced that its Secure Element Manager (SEM) solution for NFC (Near Field Communication) mobile payments has been approved by Visa. RIM's SEM is the backend solution for carriers that can securely manage credentials on SIM (subscriber identity module) cards installed in all types of NFC-capable mobile devices.

"Die Firma ist schlanker geworden, was dazu führte, dass wir Kosten reduziert haben", sagte er in einem Interview. Inzwischen werden Entscheidungen schneller getroffen, und Verantwortungen wurden neu verteilt. "Wir sind frei von Schulden und haben 2,9 Milliarden US-Dollar Barmittel zur Verfügung".

Blackberry hat sein Selbstbewusstsein zurück gewonnen. Der Markt Ende März 2013 wird dies bestätigen. Bis dahin müssen wir abwarten wie es läuft.
