Redflow chooses Thailand for battery factory

Australian battery company Redflow Limited has today announced it has established a company in Thailand to manage production of its zinc-bromine flow batteries in South East Asia.

In May, the ASX-listed company (ASX:RFX) announced its decision to move its battery manufacturing from North America to South East Asia, to be closer to its most lucrative markets, in Australia, Oceania and southern Africa, and to reduce production costs.

In a statement to the ASX this morning, Redflow reported that it has established Redflow (Thailand) Limited, which is negotiating a lease on premises in a Thai free trade zone. It is also seeking Thai licensing and regulatory approvals.

As well as its location, close to Redflow’s supply chain and marketplaces, Thailand offers good manufacturing expertise, competitive logistics, an attractive labour cost and effective tax treatment for international manufacturers within its free trade zone structure.

Redflow CEO Simon Hackett said the final North American production batch of ZBM2 batteries was now in transit to Australia. “I’m pleased to report that our stack manufacturing equipment from North America has arrived in Thailand ahead of schedule,” he said.

”We remain on track to commence production with our new manufacturing partner MPTS as planned.”

Redflow also reported that its integration partners have sold its ZCell batteries to residential and commercial properties in Queensland, NSW, ACT, Tasmania, Victoria and SA.

Mr Hackett said most ZCell batteries were deployed in scalable configurations using multiple parallel batteries, which leverage the key technical and economic advantages of Redflow’s unique technology. “Popular configurations include 2-6 battery off-grid residential systems and 3-6 battery on-grid residential and commercial systems,” he said.

The ASX update stated that Redflow has now delivered all the batteries for its largest order to date, to New Zealand-based telecommunication systems integrator Hitech Solutions.

Hitech Solutions has commenced construction of the first of its modular energy systems to include the use of Redflow batteries. These energy systems are sized to suit the requirements of each destination site and will be deployed progressively across multiple locations in a Pacific Island nation.

Redflow also reported it is confident that the performance issues reported earlier this year are now resolved. The company has successfully tested and proved the process to remediate battery electrolyte in cases where battery quality testing indicates that this is desirable. Redflow is now progressively applying this remediation to those batteries that require it.

Redflow cashes up to target battery demand areas

Australian battery company Redflow Limited today unveiled an investment package that will raise $14.5 million to target sustainable delivery of its zinc-bromine flow batteries to high demand areas such as telecommunications. Redflow’s capital-raising follows its May announcement of decisions from a strategic review including:

-Prioritising sales to supply proven demand areas including mature telecommunications / industrial / commercial, remote/off-grid power and ‘weak-grid’ market segments

-Transitioning battery production to South East Asia at a more appropriate manufacturing site to leverage proximity to proven markets and reduce supply chain costs

-Implementing a range of key battery cost-down projects to reduce delivered product manufacturing cost by at least 30 per cent over the next 18 months, and

-Targeting sustainable cashflow-positive operations by the end of 2018.

Redflow has provided an Investor Presentation containing details of the outcome of its Strategic Review and consequent activities undertaken or planned by the company, plus its new manufacturing partner, Malaysian-based MPTS, a long-term supplier of a core component of Redflow’s battery stack.

Announced to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) this morning, Redflow’s equity raising comprises a share placement $10.5 million in two tranches to sophisticated and professional investors and the issue of $4 million worth of shares to Hackett CP Nominees Pty Ltd - an entity associated with Redflow Executive Chairman Simon Hackett - in exchange for already issued convertible notes.

Redflow Executive Chairman and CEO Simon Hackett said the strategic review had determined the best forward operating stance for the company. “We have identified that the telecommunications sector has a strong, proven and ongoing demand for energy storage that fits the ‘sweet spot’ of Redflow’s unique value proposition," he said.

"In May Redflow recorded its largest sale to date, to an energy systems integrator working in the telecommunications and network power sector.

“At the same time, Redflow will continue supplying into its ZCell residential battery sales channel which is delivering our compelling energy storage solution for residential and SOHO customers, especially those located in off-grid areas or warm climates.”

Redflow Chief Operating Officer Richard Aird said the process of disengaging from the company’s former manufacturing location was substantially complete. “The activities Redflow is undertaking to transition manufacturing and to implement key product cost-down projects are critical to the future success of the company,” he said.

“Product deliveries will continue from built-up stock-on-hand and stock in transit ahead of the planned resumption of manufacturing in South-East Asia toward the end of this calendar year. Redflow staff are keen and committed to achieving the steps needed to maximise our prospects of future success.”

Dutch dairy farm deploys six Redflow batteries

In a Netherlands first, a Dutch dairy farm has deployed six Redflow ZBM2 zinc-bromine flow batteries to store self-produced solar energy that can support its milk production with sun-harvested energy.

Dubbed the Photon Farmer, the project aims to store solar energy for the farm’s use with six 10 kilowatt hour (kWh) ZBM2 batteries, the first Redflow deployment in the Netherlands.

Located at Vierakker in the eastern Netherlands, the 57.5-hectare family-owned farm currently stocks 110 dairy cows. Due to public importance, the European Union is co-financing the deployment, which could revolutionise energy supply by supporting businesses to become energy independent.

ICL, a leading global producer of bromine and supplier of the advanced zinc-bromide electrolyte used in ZBM2 batteries, proposed Redflow for the Photon Farmer project because of the ground-breaking advantages of zinc-bromine flow batteries over older battery types such as lithium and lead-acid.

Redflow Global Sales Director Andrew Kempster, who is visiting the Netherlands this week for the project’s launch, said the Photon Farmer had produced energy with solar panels for several years. “The battery project is seeking the best business model for future local sustainable energy production, including energy storage in a battery,” he said. “Our zinc-bromine flow battery technology is well-suited for this project.”

A prime driver for the project is to enhance the ability of farms to produce energy from renewable sources, leveraging large roofs with room for solar panels and even available space for windmills.

The Dutch energy system is based on large, central production facilities with many small users whereas renewable energy production typically occurs at distributed locations. Currently, energy is produced in line with demand, which is not possible with renewable energy. For example, a dairy farmer cannot choose to milk cows only when the sun shines or when the wind blows.

Batteries solve this problem by storing surplus renewable energy. The Photon Farmer project aims to learn if the ZBM2, with its intelligent battery management system, can optimally match supply and demand. The Redflow ZBM2 is the world’s smallest flow battery.

Redflow’s unique battery is intrinsically fire safe, due to its design and the fact that its bromine electrolyte is inherently non-flammable. The ZBM2 delivers superior energy storage performance, being capable of 100 per cent daily depth of discharge and delivers 10 kWh of sustained storage for its warranted 10 years. This means no loss of energy storage capacity over time, as occurs with other battery chemistries such as lithium and lead-acid.

The Redflow ZBM2 battery is sold and installed globally for use in small to large-scale telecommunications, industrial and commercial applications. ZBM2 batteries are already in use in Austria, Germany, Portugal and Spain. Redflow has also launched its ZCell residential energy storage system for homes in Australia.

The ZBM2 zinc-bromine flow battery is made from components that are easily recyclable or reusable, which makes it a sustainable battery solution. Due to this unique design, the ZBM2 was nominated for the Responsible Care Award in 2016 by the VNCI – an annual sustainability prize within the Dutch chemical industry. Redflow charges into Asian telecom markets

Australian energy storage specialist Redflow Ltd is successfully selling its batteries in Asian countries where telecommunications have leap-frogged copper lines into wireless telephony and broadband.

Many Asian nations have jumped straight to cellular network-based phone and Internet services because they lack the copper-based communication networks that exist in countries like Australia.

As a result, Redflow is pursuing a massive potential demand in Asia for its zinc-bromine flow batteries to power mobile telecommunication towers located in areas without reliable electricity supplies.

ASX-listed Redflow, which has offices in Brisbane and Adelaide, where CEO Simon Hackett is based, is an energy storage specialist that has developed the world’s smallest zinc-bromine flow batteries (learn more at www.redflow.com).

Redflow’s 48-volt 10 kilowatt hour (kWh) flow batteries solve many of the problems that impact the region’s telecommunications providers, including the ability to operate in hot conditions without active cooling; 100 per cent depth of discharge on a daily basis; long-term storage at any state of charge, from empty to full, without damaging the battery; and construction materials with minimal resale value, making them less attractive to thieves.

Redflow’s Global Sales Director Andrew Kempster, who is based in Adelaide, said growth in Asia was based on solid relationships. “We currently support integration partners in India, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines who have sold small systems so telecommunication companies can evaluate our batteries in the field,” he said.

“This is a huge opportunity for us. A country like Indonesia has something like 85,000 telecom towers, many of which require battery backup because of unreliable electricity supplies.

“We recognise that selling successfully in Asia provides some unique challenges that require local knowledge and a lot of patience. Redflow has a senior sales executive with on-the-ground experience working in Indonesia who has helped us to engage successfully with partners in the region.

“A key to Asia is patience. If you rush, you put yourself in the hands of the wrong partners. Success comes from finding a good partner and developing that relationship on a personal and a corporate level. It’s about recognising what they want from the partnership, which is often more than just sales.

“Also, in the major cities, the early bird does not just get the worm, it also beats the traffic. A 20-minute taxi ride can take hours depending on the time of day and the weather if it’s raining, so preparation pays off.”

Redflow has also benefitted from attending regional events such as the Tower Xchange conference, held in Singapore. The annual event attracts attendees from around the region, which has repeatedly introduced Redflow to senior executives from large Asian companies.

Mr Kempster said selling in the region could also produce some surprises. “For example, the CEO of a large telco once asked me ‘how much does your battery weigh?’” he recalled.

“Not sure if the right answer was ‘heavy’ or ‘light’, I tentatively replied ‘240kg’ while expecting him to say ‘that’s too heavy!’ His response surprised me. ‘Great,’ he said, ‘it won’t get stolen’.

“This CEO loved our Redflow battery because its robustness, weight and unique construction materials are an advantage in his market segment.”
