Also: strong buy für MKTY!
hallo leute,

Volatilität muss man ohnehin in Kauf nehmen.

Celanese set to announce auto fuel cell deal
FRANKFURT, Oct 5 (Reuters) - German chemicals group Celanese <CZZG.DE> is to set to announce a deal with one of the world`s largest engine manufacturers to develop a new fuel cell for auto motors, board member Ernst Schadow said late on Wednesday.
Schadow, who said an agreement would be announced within the next two weeks, declined to name the company but industry sources identified it as Japanese automaker Honda <7267.T>.
Celanese, which is working with U.S. company Plug Power <PLUG.O> on stationary fuel cells for heating and power generation, will supply the membrane at the heart of the power unit while its partner will produce the mechanical component.
At a dinner meeting with the Frankfurt Club of International Business Journalists, Schadow said Celanese was confident of securing a long-term deal with Power Plug, a specialist in fuel cells for use in homes, which has a distribution agreement with General Electric Co`s <GE.N> GE Fuel Cell Systems.
Schadow gave no indication of when he expected the new fuel cells to be available, but said a decision would depend on the market.
"We`ll be ready when the market needs it," he said, adding that the membrane could be delivered immediately once production had been built up.
Schadow said Celanese`s fuel cell activities would be combined with other projects in areas ranging from catalytic convertors and food additives into a new unit called Celanese Ventures.
Fuel cells, seen by analysts as having significant potential in the long term as replacements for fossil fuels, can be used to power a range of applications from power turbines to auto engines and laptop and mobile telephone batteries.
The cells, made up of membranes, electrodes and gas diffusion layers sandwiched between bipolar plates convert hydrogen -- normally contained in fuels such as natural gas or methanol -- and oxygen into electricity.
Hydrogen, which is ionised, passes through the membranes where it combines with oxygen from the air to produce water, heat and electricity.
Schadow said the Celanese membrane, made from polybenzimadazol, a high performance plastic made exclusively by the company, was capable of working at twice the temperature managed by rival manufacturers.
Celanese Chief Executive Claudio Sonder also reiterated forecasts that the third quarter would be "a difficult quarter" which would end in an operating loss but he said the full year would end in profit.

>

Besuchen Sie uns in Halle 13, Stand 28.

was sagen die indikatoren ?

Plug Power management held its 3rd annual conference from 5/16-5/18 in
Cooperstown, NY for customers, business partners and Wall Street analysts.
Mark Sperry, Chief Marketing Officer, reiterated Plug`s expectation of
delivering 125-150 SU1 fuel cell units in 2001. Plug plans to broaden its
target markets to include commercial applications, combined heat and power
applications, as well as seek additional strategic partnerships. The
company`s primary target remains the mass residential fuel cell market.
Plug expects to ship its first commercial product in 3Q01. The SU1 fuel cell
system will have a minimum power output of 5kW and be able to operate in grid
parallel mode, meaning it will be able to connect to the user`s grid based
power supply and not have to run independently. The SU1 will run on natural
gas. Management stated that the unit`s targeted electricity efficiency goal
is greater than 40%, and overall efficiency with Combined Heat & Power (CHP)
is expected to be greater than 80%.
At the end of 1Q01, 10 prototype units had been built and 11 next stage
verification units had been built. Design verification and testing is
currently underway to determine system reliability and efficiencies.
Certification with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the Canadian Standards
Association (CSA) is underway as well. Management expects to ship
approximately 400-600 units in 2002, 2,000-5,000 in `03, 10,000-20,000 in
`04, and 30,000-50,000 in`05.
Cost cutting efforts have resulted in a reduction in Plug`s cash burn rate to
$16.9 million in 1Q01 from $18.7 in 4Q00. Management expects its cash
balance to be approximately $22 million by the end of the year and should
last through 2Q02. Further guidance on the company`s funding plans beyond
2001 are expected by the end of 2Q01.
An impressive list of improvements in the current SU1 test model over the
last Beta unit included:
* 20% decrease in cost of materials since 1/1/01 (expected to be
33% by year end)
* 55% decrease in overall unit size
* 40% decrease in overall unit weight
* 60% decrease in unit manufacturing time
* 65% decrease in required manpower for production
* 20% decrease in number of total parts
* 40% decrease in number of internal connections
DTE Energy
Anthony Earley, Chairman and CEO, spoke of DTE`s collaborative relationship
with Plug and his expectations of it continuing long term. Earley described
DTE as being able to provide an elaborate real world transmission and
distribution (T&D) test system to Plug. Comments focused on their plan to
integrate distributed generation (DG) into the grid with fuel cell systems
providing back up power for substations as well businesses. As of the last
regulatory filing, DTE Energy owns ~32% of Plug Power.
General Electric Distributed Power
Barry Glickman, President of GE Distributed Power, defined distributed
generation for GE as being any power source providing less than 50 MW. GE`s
estimates the DG market opportunity in 2000 at about $27 billion. Of this
amount over half is supplied by high speed diesel reciprocating engines with
other technologies, including gas turbines, solar and wind, having no more
than mid single digit percentage shares. Emerging technologies are still
less than 1%, which provides substantial opportunities for future growth.
Some of the lessons learned in GE`s relationship with Plug that Glickman
pointed out were that "mass market" DG products are more difficult to
cultivate that previously expected due to complex customer requirements and
technology challenges, and that there are more "early market" niche
applications than previously believed and can be addressed in the near term.
Glickman expressed optimism in GE`s future relationship with Plug. He noted
that Plug has become better at asking for development and engineering
assistance and that GE has become better at finding ways to provide
beneficial solutions. Recent changes in legal agreements between the two
have yielded business terms with sufficient flexibility to allow for changes
in products and market conditions. GE Micro Generation owns ~12% of Plug
Power and will market and distribute Plug product under GE Fuel Cell Systems.
Vaillant
Henning Rittstieg, Business Unit Manager, outlined Vaillant`s plan to offer a
Plug Power fuel cell based combined heat and power system to the European
market. Vaillant is the number one supplier in Europe of residential water
heaters and boilers with over 24% market share and sales of 1.3 billion
Euros. The company is based in Remscheid, Germany and has 14 production
plants in 7 countries with over 7500 employees.
An important point Rittstieg made is that there is no electricity shortage in
Europe. In fact, it is estimated that Europe has about 20%-30% reserve
surplus. Therefore, the heat generating capability of a fuel cell based
water heater and power supply is much more important to this market than its
electricity generating capacity. However, the combined offering of heat and
electricity should be instrumental in successful market acceptance. The
company`s Fuel Cell Heater is expected to be commercially available in 2004.
Vaillant is also working on a "virtual power plant" project. This project
will include 50 fuel cell systems installed in residential homes that are
interconnected and can be controlled and monitored by a remote station. The
eventual goal is to have hundreds or thousands of these interconnected fuel
cell power plants that can be remotely turned on by a central station at peak
demand times to drastically reduce the strain placed on existing grid based
power plants. This test project has received funding from the EU and is
expected to be functional in 2002. A larger test including 400 pilot plants
is expected for 2003.

Latham, N.Y.-Based Fuel Cell Reduces Earnings Loss
Jul 27, 2001 (Times Union - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Fuel cell maker Plug Power Inc. cut spending 22 percent during the second quarter as it lost $18.3 million, or $300,000 more than in the same period a year before.
The 41-cent-per-share loss was a penny better than the 42 cents the Latham-based company lost during the same period last year.
Roger Saillant, president and chief executive, said the cuts highlighted the company`s commitment to meeting goals it has set -- something that has been a stumbling block in the past.
"I`m very, very pleased to lead this company," Saillant said. "I feel now we have a team in place that can go the distance for profitability for us."
Plug officials expect to move into the black by 2006.
As the company reduces its cash spending, it also is trying to make its fuel cells less expensive. Widespread acceptance of Plug`s tiny power plants depends on how cheap they get. By year`s end, Saillant said, the company will have sliced a third off its production costs.
Still, at about $12,000 a kilowatt, the company figures it must shave another $11,500 off that before homeowners flock to stores to buy a fuel cell.
Fuel cells make electricity as part of a chemical reaction, with water vapor a byproduct.
Saillant said commercial users are likely to pay $1,000 to $5,000 a kilowatt for the units.
Plug`s initial units were rated at five kilowatts, enough to power a medium-size house. Plug expects to sell about 125 to 150 units this year. It sold its first 75 units for $7 million to the Long Island Power Authority earlier this summer; revenue from those sales will start showing up in the company`s balance sheets in its next quarterly report.
Plug recently raised $54 million by selling more stock, through both a secondary offering and to two of its largest investors, General Electric Co. and DTE Energy.
The money should help the company run into the second half of 2003, when it will have to raise more cash to stay alive.
Over the first half of 2001, Plug lost $37.3 million, about $2 million more than it lost during the same stretch of 2000.
Shares of Plug (Nasdaq: PLUG) closed at $11.80 Thursday, down 22 cents. Since the beginning of the year, its stock has fallen 20 percent.

- PRNewswire
ALBANY, N.Y., Aug 1, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Mechanical Technology Inc. (Nasdaq:MKTY) announced it has received an award of more than $4.6 million by the Advanced Technology Program (ATP) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The award is to carry out a two-and-a-half-year, $9.3 million cost-shared program to research and develop a micro fuel cell for use in portable electronics.
The primary program goal is to combine a direct methanol micro fuel cell (DMFC) being developed by Mechanical Technology with other components to create an advanced micro fuel cell system. The proposed system, a portable power source the size of a current cell phone battery, would substantially extend the "on" or total use time of a mobile phone, be instantly refuelable and more environmentally friendly than current battery technology.
Mechanical Technology`s primary partner in the project is DuPont -- whose Nafion(R) membrane is the benchmark for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Also participating is the University at Albany`s Institute for Materials (UAIM), which will help design and fabricate the microelectromechanical (MEMS) fluid management system. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute`s Center for Integrated Electronics and Electronics Manufacturing in Troy, N.Y., will work on integrating the system`s controls and power conditioning. And JME Inc., a small business based in Shaker Heights, Ohio, will provide testing during the design process.
Market opportunities are vast for the type of portable power being developed by Mechanical Technology. In addition to cell phone applications, the DMFC system also could be developed for use in personal digital assistants (PDAs), laptops, and many other electronic devices.
"This competitive award speaks to the strength of our team, our technology and our approach to bringing this power source to the marketplace. I am gratified by how swiftly we have moved forward since we announced our micro fuel cell operation this January," said Dr. William P. Acker, president of Mechanical Technology.
