ExxonMobil lashes out (again!)

"XXX—

ExxonMobil has subpoenaed our staff's emails and documents related to UCS's efforts to hold the company accountable for deceiving investors and the public on climate change. This followed a similar subpoena by the Exxon-friendly chair of the House Science committee, Representative Lamar Smith.

Their strategy: tie up the people and organizations who exposed their efforts to deceive the public, cost them time and money, and scare nonprofits off from future accountability efforts.

And with Donald Trump's nomination of Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State, it's clear Exxon's political power will be more formidable than ever.

Well, let me say this: we refuse to be intimidated. We will continue this fight. But by 12/31 we need to know what resources we'll have—as we work to stop the corporate and political attacks on science that we know are coming right on the heels of Trump's inauguration. Renew your support with a tax-deductible gift of $5 or more to the Union of Concerned Scientists before 12/31 >>

ExxonMobil is attacking UCS because we are a real threat. They know we don't take government or corporate funding so we're more independent and less susceptible to intimidation. They know we're bipartisan and can mobilize people across the political spectrum. They're hoping the prospect of an expensive legal fight will convince us to drop our role as a defender of science.

But we won't stop fighting. Even with fossil fuel allies controlling Congress and the presidency next year, we can and will continue to work for real climate change solutions.

Take palm oil, one of the biggest agricultural commodities on the planet. Over the last 10 years, booming demand led to massive tropical deforestation—and colossal carbon emissions. So we worked with investors, targeted huge brands like General Mills and Procter & Gamble, and collaborated with other organizations—securing sustainability policy changes at 24 major global brands in just the last few years. And as of this year, most globally traded palm oil is covered by solid commitments to zero deforestation, saving millions of acres of forest and keeping tons of carbon out of the air.¹

Or take our progress in the last year, even with a hostile Congress: We helped pass best-in-class clean energy laws in California, Oregon, Illinois, and Massachusetts and won strong national fuel efficiency standards for heavy duty trucks (which will prevent 1.1 billion tons of carbon pollution).²

We won these victories after years of smart campaigning—often under political climates that were discouraging.

Help us show our opponents that they can't bully us into silence. Renew your support for the Union of Concerned Scientists—give $5 or more today.

We've already organized thousands of scientists to pressure the incoming Trump administration—getting media attention in The Washington Post, NBC News, and The Scientist magazine—and we will continue to make our voice impossible to ignore.

We can do all this and more because of generous donors who stand up for science and the truth, and who believe that progress is possible, no matter the obstacles from fossil fuel companies and their political allies.

Under the new president and Congress, we expect more and more political and corporate attacks on science, on scientists themselves, and on safeguards for our health and the environment.

Will you have our backs? Before December 31, renew your support for the Union of Concerned Scientists. Help us hit this goal—and repudiate ExxonMobil's attack.

Thank you for your steadfast support, especially in these challenging times.
Ken Kimmell Sincerely,
Ken Kimmell

China shakes up, 2,000-year-old, salt monopoly

www.mining.com/web/china-shakes-up-2000-year-old-salt-monopo…

"China has moved closer to dismantling a 2,000-year-old government monopoly on table salt by allowing producers to set prices and sell directly to the market.

The monopoly has supported successive Chinese rulers from the Han dynasty onwards, and helped pay for the construction of the Great Wall :eek: . The Communist party retained the monopoly after taking control of the country in 1949, with courts continuing to imprison private salt sellers even in the past decade.

The reforms, which break the government’s stranglehold over an essential element in Chinese cuisine, come as market-oriented changes in several other sectors aimed at curbing the power of state monopolies have stalled  ............................................"

"STANA. KAZINFORM - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is paying an official visit to five countries of Africa. During January 7 12 the Chinese Minister will visit Madagascar, Zambia, Tanzania, Congo and Nigeria. He has just been to Madagascar, where he met with President Hery Rajaonarimampianina in the capital Antananarivo. Wang Yi has invited African countries to participate in the implementation of economic development strategy of "One Belt and One Road", RIA Novosti informed.

"China welcomes African countries to participate in implementing the strategy of "One Belt and One Road", - the Chinese Foreign Ministry cited the words of the Minister said in the meeting with journalists in Madagascar.

According to Wang Yi, Africa has historically been part of the economic belt of the silk road, as well as an important destination when travelling to the West in the framework of Maritime silk road.

"If any African country is going to participate in the new Silk Road, we certainly welcome it" - said Wang Yi

According to the Chinese Foreign Minister China has already held consultations on this account with a number of African countries, especially those located on the Eastern coast of Africa and which have achieved progress.

"I hope that as the continuous development of cooperation, the African countries will get from China more and more bonuses for development", - said Wang Yi

China in 2013 announced a new economic development strategy "One Belt and One Road", aimed at creating infrastructure and establishing ties between the countries of Eurasia. The strategy includes two key areas of development: economic zone of the silk road and the Maritime silk road. The strategy implies creation of a trade corridor for direct delivery of goods from the East to the West on favorable terms."

"India’s government wants more local gold. This week directing state-run Minerals Exploration Corp. to assess remaining reserves at the historic Kolar Gold Fields district — ahead of a possible re-start of this legendary producing region.

But reports from elsewhere in the country this week suggest gold buyers are continuing to vanish from the market. With one particular group of industrial consumers showing some surprising figures on demand.

That’s India’s gold refiners. A sector where local press reported capacity rates have fallen to 25% — showing that a full three-quarters of gold refining output has been idled in recent months.

The situation is so dire that refiners are apparently looking at a big round of consolidation — needed in order to stay in business as profits dwindle.

So why all the financial problems? Apparently, it’s a lack of gold imports.

Many of these Indian refiners use dore gold as an input — a form of half-finished bullion that often comes directly from mine sites, rather than from end-user refiners in countries like Switzerland.

Up until recently, imports of dore into India enjoyed preferential tax treatment — being charged a rate of only 8%, as compared to 10% for fully-finished gold.

That led importers to bring in growing amounts of dore, giving a steady supply of feed to local refiners. As the chart below from a recent World Gold Council study shows, India’s dore imports grew by an astounding 896% between 2012 and 2015.

But 2016 brought big changes. With India’s government increasing the import tax on dore to 8.75%.

That, combined with other charges, has made dore imports largely unprofitable — resulting in a major drop-off in supplies, and a lack of feed that has pushed refiners to today’s incredibly low utilization rates.

That’s an important observation for the gold mining industry. With dore buying from India having represented a significant source of direct-from-mine purchases over the last few years. Benefitting miners in places like Ghana, the Dominican Republic and Peru.

The current reversal in dore buying could leave some of these producers in the lurch. Watch for miners in these places looking for new buyers — and to see if this shift affects overall global gold demand.

Here’s to moving on,

www.australianmining.com.au/news/iron-ore-surges-past-us90-t…

"For the first time in two-and-a-half years, iron ore prices have soared past US$90 a tonne. This is a 5.5 per cent increase up from US$87 the session prior, according to the Steel Index.

Overall this is an increase of more than 14 per cent over the past two weeks when the price started at $US80.20 a tonne, according to a report in The Australian. The report states that the price is being driven by high Chinese ore imports.

“The fact we have seen stockpiles of iron ore at Chinese port increase to a new 10-year high of 127 million tonnes (+2.8 per cent on the week) is certainly helpful,” IG chief market strategist Chris Weston said. “But then you also hear that the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection has proposed a draft to further cut steel and aluminium producers by as much as 30 per cent in 28 cities across five regions, and this is like a red rag to a bull for the speculators.”

There is still caution in the market about the prices rise, because the industry knows that Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Roy Hill mines have got a lot of ore coming online over the next couple of years.

However, analysts have been caught out by the rise in prices, with many predicting the current price wouldn’t be reached until after 2020. But before shareholders and speculators get too excited about the current numbers being reached, most analysts still predict that it will average out at about $55 a tonne for the year."

Agnico Eagle eyes hovercraft, to look for gold, in Nunavut

------> www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/agnico-eagle-hovercraft-gold-nu…

"Agnico Eagle is hoping a pair of hovercraft will allow the gold mining company to conduct year-long exploration in Nunavut's Kivalliq region.

The company is planning to ship two hovercraft this summer to its Meadowbank gold mine north of Baker Lake, Nunavut.

The one-year pilot project still needs approval from the Nunavut Impact Review Board.

If the regulators approve, a couple of three-tonne hovercraft with a total price tag of under $3 million will be on their way to Baker Lake via sealift later this year.

One of the hovercraft would be used to transport up to 22 people. The other one would move equipment from its planned Amaruq mine to drill sites on the tundra.

In its proposal to the territory's planning commission, the company says the hovercraft would have a very low environmental impact on the ground and a noise level equivalent to about two snowmobiles.

The vehicles would also be a cheaper and safer alternative to using helicopters for exploration work said Dale Coffin, a spokesperson for Agnico Eagle.

"We've been looking for alternative sources of transportation. What's been used, what is being used in other regions in the far North and we kept coming back to the hovercraft," he said.

"It's being used quite extensively in the Siberia region of northern Russia.

"Same conditions, same type of climate; very cold, very much a winter climate. It's suitable for them, why can't it be suitable for us?"

Used, in the North
A Russian hovercraft manufacture visited the site to determine whether or not the vehicle would cut it in the Kivalliq, home to shallow lakes and rolling rocky hills. The company gave it the go-ahead.

"You're not going to climb across mountain ranges," said Adrian Went, the managing director of British hovercraft manufacturer Griffon Hoverwork.

"You're going to use it to find your way across the sea or into fields for example when they're frozen over."

His company's hovercraft have been used in the oil and gas sector in Alaska, by the Canadian Coast Guard on the St. Lawrence and by Norwegian researchers who used one to glide across an ice floe toward the North Pole.

Agnico Eagle is hoping hovercraft will extend its exploration season year-round. From the end of October to the end of January, Dale said exploration work shuts down until winter roads can be developed. A hovercraft could erase the wait, gliding over water and ice. Then there's the added benefit to use them in search and rescue.

"We think there's GREAT potential, if it works out," Dale said. "

Scientists UNEARTH THE REASON FOR WORLD'S RICHEST ORE DEPOSITS; Scientists have identified why some of the richest ore deposits, such as copper, zinc +uranium, were formed during the middle period of the Earth’s history

www.australianmining.com.au/news/scientists-unearth-reason-w…

"The team from the University of Tasmania and University of California, led by emeritus professor Ross Large from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits (CODES), attributed this to the rise in oxygen in the atmosphere at the time.

Oxygen in the atmosphere 2.3 to 1.8 billion years ago not only caused a change in the evolution of life, it also caused a shift from the formation of iron, gold, nickel ore deposits to zinc, silver, copper and uranium ore deposits.

Some of Australia’s biggest and richest ore deposits formed after this switch, such as those at Broken Hill (zinc-lead-silver), Olympic Dam (copper-uranium), Ranger (uranium) and Mt Isa (copper-zinc-lead-silver).

The team tracked the level of oxygen in the Earth’s ancient atmosphere using a laser based analytical technology developed at the University of Tasmania. It helped determine the changes in the chemistry of pyrite (fools gold) that grew in seafloor muds billions of years ago, tracking the ups and downs of oxygen in the atmosphere.

They found that massive deposits of gold, iron and nickel formed in the oldest (Archean) rocks when oxygen was very low in the atmosphere and oceans.

However, when oxygen drastically increased following the Great Oxygenation Event – around two billion years ago – the amount of sulfate and salt increased in crustal fluids, leading to a switch to giant deposits of copper, zinc, silver and uranium.

Professor Large said the basic reason for the switch is very simple.

“Copper, zinc, silver and uranium are readily mobile in oxygen-rich and salty crustal fluids, which were plentiful during middle Earth history, whereas gold and iron are only mobile in low oxygen crustal fluids, like the most ancient fluids, that preceded the Great Oxygenation Event,” he said.

“We now have a much better idea of how oxygen changed in the ancient atmosphere and how this relates to the generation of large and rich ore deposits in ancient rocks.

“Australia has extensive areas of rocks deposited after the Great Oxygenation Event and our research provides a new lead to assist geologists in the discovery of rich deposits of copper, zinc and uranium.”"

BHP Billiton Limited (BHP); Rio Tinto Limited (RIO); South32 Limited (S32):
Shareholders in BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto believe the management of those companies have learnt the lessons from their failed investments over the past decade and are likely to return strong dividends to shareholders in the years ahead. Rebounding commodity prices allowed BHP and Rio to reduce their net debt by $US6 billion ($7.9 billion) and $US4.2 billion respectively over the past year, and both companies opted to pay higher-than-expected dividends last month. The stronger balance sheets have raised the prospect of mergers and acquisitions, but David Whitten from Sydney-based Henderson Global Natural Resources Fund said he was ‘‘particularly positive’’ about the capital discipline being demonstrated by the big miners. BHP Billiton will employ temporary workers at its Escondida copper mine in Chile and restart operations, after striking workers again rejected an invitation to return to negotiations. The world’s largest copper mine will first resume work in two areas of the mine that
are unrelated to the current talks, Escondida mine president Marcelo Castillo said at a news conference in the city of Antofagasta. The company will then begin additional maintenance work before finally re-establishing mining operations and restarting copper production. Mr Whitten said dividends from big miners should ‘‘surge’’ for several years yet. ‘‘We believe at the very minimum, under existing management teams, over the next two to three years, investors could expect high cash returns as these miners finally benefit from the heavy investments over the last decade,’’ he said on Wednesday, extending the comments to Glencore, South32 and Anglo American,

interessantes Ding,
bin gespannt ob Er mit Seiner Basisthese("back to discovery-Exploration")
recht bekommt,
sollte man sich ansehen:

- There's been relatively little gold exploration in the last few years, but John Kaiser of Kaiser Research believes that may be set to change. "I think we're going to see a shift back to discovery exploration as opposed to simply feasibility demonstration," he says in the video above.

If that happens, there will be plenty of opportunities for investors to profit. But which gold exploration companies are poised to do the best? According to Kaiser, one thing investors can do to help narrow the field is to gain an understanding of the different types discovery exploration.

"Cover all the bases, place bets on these different styles. The key is to understand ... the strategy behind [each] junior, and give yourself exposure to a number of them," he explains.

For instance, some companies are doing traditional exploration, while others are using new technology to take a different approach to the exploration process. Still others are returning to old districts with new ideas on how to make them profitable once again.

Watch the video above to hear Kaiser explain those types of exploration and give examples of gold juniors that are using each style. He also discusses gold juniors with optionality and what Donald Trump's presidency could mean for commodities.

You can also skip directly to different parts of the interview:

- After sharing six junior mining stocks on his watch list at this January's Vancouver Resource Investment Conference, John Kaiser of Kaiser Research took some time to chat again at Zimtu Capital's Vancouver Commodities Forum.

In terms of the overall market, Kaiser believes that while the market may not be out of the woods yet, it has definitely turned a corner. "I think there's running room for this bull market," he said.

Here are the five stocks Kaiser discussed:

Sirios Resources (TSXV:SOI)
Arizona Mining (TSX:AZ)
Peregrine Diamonds (TSX:PGD)
Scandium International Mining (TSX:SCY)

(202) 224-3121

"Communities across the United States are threatened by proposed natural gas pipelines. These communities are fighting natural gas pipelines that would irreversibly destroy homes, land, and drinking water. Take action now to join these communities in fighting back against corporate greed.

Call your senators today through the Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121 to tell them you don’t want any more pipelines!

Natural gas pipeline approvals are “regulated” by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which uses its power to support the interests of the fossil fuel industry instead of regulating it. As a result, FERC has only rejected one pipeline in 30 years.

FERC regularly ignores legitimate concerns of communities, landowners, farmers, small businesses, and scientists about the impacts of proposed pipelines. Its constant greenlighting of pipelines is paving the way for decades of fracked gas and destroyed land and water in the US.

We need Congress to expose FERC and its abuses.

Right now, we are in a rare moment. FERC is down to two commissioners and can’t approve any pipelines until at least one new FERC Commissioner is approved by the Senate.

That’s why we need you to contact your senators today at (202) 224-3121 and tell them to block any FERC commissioners until the agency’s abuses stop.

Congress needs to take legislative action to change FERC into an agency that listens to and supports communities, instead of the fossil fuel industry, and an agency that supports a transition to the renewable energy economy that we need.

Call your senators today through the Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121 and tell them to put a halt to FERC’s abuses and to support a renewable energy future.

Tell them you want them to:

Oppose Any New FERC Commissioners chosen by the Trump Administration
Demand Congressional Hearings regarding FERC’s abuses against communities and the agency’s bias towards industry
Identify reforms that will result in an agency dedicated to a just transition to clean energy that serves the people and the planet

Thank you for all you do to create a greener world,

- One of the world’s great natural treasures, the Pink Star diamond will lead Sotheby’s sale of Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite in Hong Kong on 4 April. Estimated in excess of US$60 million, this 59.60-carat oval mixed-cut pink diamond is the largest Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Pink diamond ever graded by the GIA. The sale of the Pink Star continues Sotheby’s tradition of bringing some of the rarest and most extraordinary collectibles to market. -

- New York-based diamond cutter Isaac Wolf outbid three rivals last November to pay 76.3 million Swiss francs ($83.02 million) for the flawless pink diamond in an auction guaranteed by Sotheby's.

In a post-earnings conference call, the auction house said it reversed the related commission revenue as a result of the buyer default and recorded the pink diamond in inventory at a value of about $72 million.

"We are currently in discussions with the buyer, while also considering other alternatives," Patrick McClymont, Sotheby's CFO said on the call with analysts. "In the meantime, we are quite comfortable with our valuation, and see real value in owning the diamond at this price."

The world-record price for the diamond, which had been renamed "The Pink Dream" after Wolf acquired it, had included a "buyer's premium," or commission fees. The diamond's pre-sale estimate was $61 million.

The 59.60-carat Pink Star was the main attraction at Sotheby's November jewels sale in Geneva, which was the highest jewelry sale total for a single auction in history - $199.5 million.

On Thursday (February 27), Sotheby's reported weaker-than-expected quarterly profit, hurt by higher operating expenses and increased competition. The auctioneer reported earnings of $1.30 per share that missed analysts' estimates of $1.40 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Billionaire hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb mounted a proxy fight with the goal of winning three board seats after the auction house's promise to return $450 million to shareholders failed to appease activist investors.

- In his first interview in five years, Sheldon Inwentash discusses his re-entry into the mining space with ThreeD Capital, Northern Sphere Mining, Palisade Resources, and more.

Mr. Inwentash founded Pinetree in 1992, their first projects were in technology and biotech, then they moved into the resource sector which had been undervalued. They used their existing capital and started investing into junior producers and other assets that were solid and discounted. That steadily evolved into a billion dollar juggernaut. Pinetree ended up fighting the tape for five years as markets slowly dropped. Share prices kept declining, while they were still investing in the space, the market interest declined, in 2015 the debt holders got nervous and foreclosed.

Sheldon feels that gold got ahead of itself at $1900, it needed to correct. We are now coming off a much better base where companies can still make money unlike previous bear markets.

Today, Sheldon is teaming up through ThreeD Capital (CSE:IDK) with Palisade Global Investments Ltd to work on Palisade Resources and Goldspot Discoveries. At his new company, Sheldon plans to be more hands, more selective, almost like an operator, with the aim of helping companies develop. Many of the major mining companies are looking at acquiring large new discoveries to renew their resource base - this is where Sheldon sees the value being created.

Palisade Global Investments and ThreeD Capital together formed Palisade Resources which has has acquired or staked nearly 30 large plays across Canada and the US. It’s a totally unworked jurisdiction with many opportunities, they have a good property portfolio with 100% ownership. Purchasing shares of ThreeD Capital which is public, is a way of gaining exposure to Palisade Resources and Goldspot Discoveries.

Sheldon is excited about Northern Sphere Mining, owner of the Scadding Project in Sudbury and the Black Diamond Project in Arizona. They have put together a good technical team, with financial backing, and equipment. In fact, Eric Sprott just invested $2M!

Many gold mines have been high graded, however there are still some undiscovered names with quality assets. Sheldon is extremely optimistic on the precious metals side and says the best moves are yet to come, but you have to be cautious. -

"Chile’s Codelco, the world's biggest copper producer, is moving forward with its plans to tap into the booming lithium industry by creating Salar de Maricunga S.A., a subsidiary that is expected to help speed up the approval of legislation that allows the exploration and exploitation of the country’s vast deposits of the silver-white metal.

Setting up the new company, with an initial capital of $286,000, is part of Chile’s broader plan conceived by the National Lithium Commission to further develop the country’s lithium sector, which includes opening it to foreign companies.
"Codelco is also studying bids received for its Maricunga and Pedernales deposits, which it put up for tender in January."

At the same time, Codelco is studying bids received for its Maricunga and Pedernales deposits, in the northern region of Atacama, after it put exploration rights for those assets up for tender in January.

The company, however, has not disclosed how many companies bid for those deposits, nor has revealed any names, local news outlet El Pulso reported (in Spanish).

Chile is the world's second-largest producer of the metal, which has become an irreplaceable component of rechargeable batteries used in high tech devices and electric cars.

The country contains half of the world’s most “economically extractable” reserves of the metal, according to the US Geographical Survey (USGS). It is also the world’s lowest-cost producer, thanks to an efficient process that makes the most of the country’s climate.

Demand for the commodity, frequently referred to as "white petroleum," has been rising as of late, which in turn has caused prices to more than double in the past 18 months."

- John Anderson is a mining investor and the Chairman of Triumph Gold (TSX-V:TIG), a company that represents Palisade’s largest holding.

Triumph Gold (formerly Northern Freegold) is an exploration company with a large low-grade deposit of 6 million ounce gold equivalent.

John explains that Triumph is an optionality play. When the market moves you can see large swings in share price. Yet, there is a lot of exploration potential at the property. This is a leveraged call on gold and even copper. Triumph has been putting together a really good management team over the past year.

Goldcorp recently bought a property close to Triumph, called Kaminak for $520 million. Triumph has the advantage of already having roads and other infrastructure nearby.
Goldcorp has since invested in Triumph, and John says they have been fantastic to deal with. They like the team and haven’t placed any demands on management.

Triumph also hired Tony Barreshi a geologist who is now their VP of Exploration. Tony has reviewed the data on the deposits and has some good theories as to the location of higher-grade deposits. They have four new exploration ideas and will be drilling a minimum of 12,000 meters this year.

Palisade is a major shareholder of Triumph Gold (TSX-V:TIG & OTCMKTS:NFRGF) stock having invested $1M in the open market in the past 12 months. -

NT Government considers Tennant Creek COMMON user mine

www.australianmining.com.au/news/nt-government-considers-ten…
------> http://newsroom.nt.gov.au/mediaRelease/23113
www.amec.org.au/news/media-releases/nt-set-to-attract-miners

"The Northern Territory Government has committed to fund a feasibility study into the development of a common user mine and processing facility in Tennant creek, set to bring more jobs to the region.

The feasibility study will determine the viability of the project, which aims to allow small mining operations to begin without the cost of a major investment in their processing fees.

“This is an impediment which is preventing small companies and mining efforts from getting underway,” NT chief minister Michael Gunner, who made the announcement, said.

The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) welcomed the commitment, with CEO Simon Bennison saying the study showed the government’s recognition of the mining industry’s contribution to the Territory.

“It is a fantastic outcome for those small miners who may just need that extra incentive to invest or expand in the Northern Territory
,” Bennison said.

“There is strong competition between Australian states and territories to attract the mining dollar and the opportunity to trim costs by using a common processing facility could make all the difference to where that dollar is spent.”

The feasibility study is one of five major projects the NT Government is funding with the upcoming 2017 Budget; set to boost the Territory’s economy, create employment and attract investment.

“They are aimed at creating jobs now both directly and indirectly and leveraging additional investment from the private sector later,” Gunner said.

The other four projects include transforming the Darwin CBD; creating a Ship Lift and Marine Business Park to assist defence and border force vessels and other shipping fleets; revitalising the Alice Springs CBD; and establishing the Katherine Logistics and Agribusiness hub.

Earlier this month, the Territory Government also committed $250,000 for feasibility study assessing the possibility of developing a second LNG train at ConocoPhillips’ Darwin LNG facility."

Drones boost mine remediation in the NT; Drones are being used to inspect legacy mines in the Northern Territory, helping aid remediation efforts. Minister for primary industries and resources, Ken Vowles, said drone technology can reach inaccessible areas of the mine, producing digital terrain models, to give operators a better perspective of the site. “The use of this new drone technology allows for fast +efficient inspection of legacy mining sites, leading to further remediation work, +heightened community safety,” he said. Vowles said drone technology had been used in the Tennant Creek area, inspecting legacy mine sites Orlando, Warrego, Nobles Nob +former Peko mine, following heavy rainfall. “The vision that has come back from these sites has proven to be of huge benefit, as it allowed rapid investigation to see if any urgent works were needed,” he said. “Images, +data, from the drone can be used to help plan the next stages of work, to help mitigate risk from legacy mine sites”

www.australianmining.com.au/features/mining-industry-can-con…

"The Australian mining industry is finally seeing positive outcomes from the measures taken during the post-boom era.

In the recent reporting period, Australia’s leading iron ore miners – Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Fortescue Metals Group – all talked up the results of these initiatives.

While the rebound in commodity prices obviously played a central role in the financial improvement of the triumvirate, the focus on productivity, innovation and efficiency was also crucial, according to the companies.

Rio Tinto turned a loss of more than $1 billion in 2015 into a $6 billion profit in 2016, with chief executive officer Jean-Sebastien Jacques attributing the performance to the company’s commitment to maximise productivity from its assets.

“We enter 2017 in good shape. Our team will deliver $US5 billion of extra free cash flow over the next five years from our productivity programme,” Jacques said.

After delivering half year profits of more than $4 billion BHP CEO Andrew McKenzie said the result followed several years of a “considered and deliberate approach” to improve productivity and redesign the company’s portfolio and operating model.

Meanwhile, Fortescue also boosted its half-year profit, to almost $1.6 billion, with CEO Nev Power commenting that the company was continuing an “unwavering focus” on delivering against productivity and cost reduction targets.

As Deloitte outlines in the second point of its 2017 Tracking the Trends report, titled Unlocking productivity improvement: “Although commodity prices have begun climbing, most miners now understand the dangers inherent in ramping up spending as the cycle turns.

Instead, companies are seeking ways to both sustain and extend the productivity improvements they have begun to realise, Deloitte continued.

So, how will the Australian mining achieve this????????????????????????????

Productivity levers

According to Deloitte national mining leader Nicki Ivory, the focus on reducing costs is the productivity lever that Australian companies have used the most to lift productivity during the downturn.

Now, Ivory added, it is time that mining companies took the next step to unlock new productivity gains to further improve cost efficiency in the next era of the industry.

“It is about looking at how we can do things differently to keep productivity in the equation. How we can spend less capital to achieve the same result. How we use people more efficiently,” Ivory told Australian Mining.

This means maintaining focus on many of the same principles that were introduced during the downturn, despite the recent turnaround in market conditions.

“What we have historically seen in the mining cycles is that cost cutting always comes in as part of the down cycle, but then those learnings are quickly lost during the next upcycle because it becomes all about growth,” Ivory explained.

“We’re now seeing it differently, maybe because the fall has been so bad during the downturn.

“Those learnings seem to be a lot more embedded and part of mining’s DNA now. We have to maintain cost discipline so that disciplined approach is definitely being carried forward as we perhaps start to move into an upturn again.”

Targeting technology

Technology is the obvious productivity lever that the mining industry can continue to use to unlock further productivity improvement, Ivory continued.

Many of the technologies that mining can apply have been emerging in the industry for at least a decade now, including remote operating centres, autonomous equipment and the use of cloud-based applications.

“The iron ore industry, and particularly BHP and Rio, have obviously been at the forefront with some of the stuff they have been doing,” Ivory said.

“Some of the classic examples everyone knows about are the autonomous trucks they have been working on for a while and are now operating. And then the autonomous trains will be next.

“(But) when we talk about technology it is quite a broad thing – it is not just about automation.”

With that Ivory points to what the mining industry can learn from other industries, such as manufacturing and pharmaceuticals.

“It is not just about information technology but also chemical technologies, especially if you think about the processing that is required in mining. It is about taking the technology from industries like pharmaceuticals and manufacturing, and learning how you can process differently,” Ivory said.

“The point in that is that we don’t just look at what we’re doing in our industry but learning from other industries too – quite frankly mining has not historically been good at adopting from anywhere else.”

Innovative culture

Ivory said companies in the mining industry also needed to create an innovative culture, not only during a market downturn, but when conditions are also on the rise, and even booming.

She believes this is a strategy that is only just being properly understood throughout the industry.

“The penny is now dropping in that there is a lot that can be done without spending much money – it’s a cultural thing at the end of the day,” Ivory explained.

“You need to have your culture right and accept that you might fail at something. And you mustn’t punish failure – you need to fail fast and learn from it.

“If there is culture that you can’t fail at something and you will be punished, then that really stifles innovation.”

While that may have been a common mining culture of the past, another principle that has emerged during the downturn that also drives innovation is collaboration

Ivory said collaboration worked for mining companies in conjunction with the technologies now being widely used in the mining industry.

She added there was now more collaboration between companies at different stages of the mining lifecycle than in the past, and it was important that this trend continued.

“It would be fair to say (the emergence of collaboration) has been slow. The big guys probably moved first. It’s such a shift from where they would have been historically and they did everything themselves,” Ivory concluded.

Australian technology designed to help solve gas crisis

www.australianmining.com.au/oil-gas/australian-technology-de…

"A new Australian-developed technology could make an important contribution to solving the country’s gas crisis by improving production rates and removing many of the environmental impacts associated with traditional fracking, according to the technology’s licensee, V2H Australia.

The technology, developed over 20 years under a joint initiative between the industry-backed Mining3 research hub and private investors, replaces traditional drill heads with a high-pressure water system that can rapidly install extensive patterns of lateral radial boreholes into multiple coal seams directly from a standard vertical production well.

It allows the laterals to be drilled from both existing and new wells, which in turn can maximise drainage efficiency and increase production.

For producers, the technology has the capacity to significantly lower capital and operational expenditure, increase well recoverability and lower environmental impacts. V2H could also be an enabler in some geological locations where there is currently no economic means of recovery, it said.

V2H Australia chief executive Darren Rice said improving production rates would be the only way to satisfy offshore demand for gas while ensuring healthy supplies for the domestic market.

“An increase in supply – through new wells and greater efficiency of existing wells – is still the best solution for urgently addressing an undersupply issue,” Rice said. “With more gas flowing there will be more available for the domestic market which will improve reliability and lower prices.

“There are already a huge number of existing wells attached to existing infrastructure which have not been tapped to their full potential. Our technology was developed specifically for this purpose.”

More than $40 million has been spent developing the technology and in Australia, field trials have been completed with a number of operators.

Last year the company appointed director Glenn Davis as chairman following the completion of a multi-million dollar capital raising.

V2H Australia was created as the domestic licensee for a suite of technology owned by V2H International. The patented technology has been under development for several years and has application on both surface and underground operations, as well as in the coal seam gas (CSG) industry."

carbon-NEUTRAL mining

www.mining-technology.com/news/newsde-beers-group-leads-rese…

"De Beers Group is leading a research project that aims to deliver carbon-neutral mining at some of its operations in five years.

The research project is a collaboration between scientists both from De Beers Group’s and internationally, and will investigate the potential to store large volumes of carbon at the company’s diamond mines through the mineralisation of kimberlite tailings.

Kimberlite tailings are left behind as residue after diamonds have been removed from the ore.

The project seeks to accelerate what is already a naturally occurring and safe process of deriving carbon from the atmosphere and storing it at a speed that could negate man-made carbon emissions.

Under estimates made by scientists, carbon storage potential of kimberlite tailings produced by a diamond mine every year could offset up to ten times the emissions from a typical project.

De Beers Group’s project lead for the initiative Dr Evelyn Mervine, said: “This project offers huge potential to completely offset the carbon emissions of De Beers’ diamond mining operations.

“Mineral carbonation technologies are not new, but what is new is the application of these technologies to kimberlite ore, which is found in abundance in the tailings at diamond sites, and which offers ideal properties for the storage of very large volumes of carbon.

“As part of the project, we are looking at how these existing technologies can be modified to develop specific solutions suitable for storing carbon in kimberlite tailings.

“The research is in its early stages and it may take some time before it is economically or practically achievable to tap into this full storage potential. However, even just tapping into a small amount could greatly reduce the net emissions at many of our mine sites in the near future, and possibly lead to carbon-neutral mining at some sites within the next five to ten years.
"This offers ideal properties for the storage of very large volumes of carbon."

“As technology improves over time, more and more carbon could feasibly be stored in kimberlite tailings, meaning we could ultimately offset more emissions than we are producing.”

The work being carried out by the project team could have significant applications for the broader mining industry.

De Beers Group CEO Bruce Cleaver said: “By replicating this technology at other mining operations around the world, this project could play a major role in changing the way not only the diamond industry, but also the broader mining industry, addresses the challenge of reducing its carbon footprint.”

This project was started last year and the mineral carbonation potential assessment studies are currently underway for Venetia Mine in South Africa and Gahcho Kué Mine in Canada. "

- Join marine scientist Claire Till to explore the significance of dissolved scandium. Learn what it’s like to be at sea collecting samples of trace elements, and the elaborate steps her team undertakes to avoid contaminating them with their ship or themselves. Find out how this seemingly obscure element illuminates important chemical and physical processes in the ocean.

Claire P. Till is Assistant Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Humboldt State University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Cruz in Ocean Sciences in 2016. Dr. Till’s research focuses on the concentrations of metals (especially scandium) in the ocean, and how they impact or provide insights into biological, chemical, and physical systems. -

We DID it!!! :):) ,
a Stunning Victory,
HISTORIC moment

" Investors just claimed a milestone win at ExxonMobil’s annual meeting with a majority vote of 62 percent in favor of the fossil fuel giant analyzing and disclosing the risks it faces due to climate change.

This vote, coupled with similar victories this year at Occidental Petroleum and PPL Corporation, represents a historic shift in investor support for climate risk disclosure. It’s clear that investors have awoken to the reality that climate change is a material concern for energy companies, and they’re demanding the transparency and analysis needed to safeguard their assets.

For Ceres, this success is decades in the making. We were founded in the wake of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill by investors concerned about the negative impact that companies can have on our environment -- and their own bottom lines -- when corners are cut on sustainability. At the start, people thought we were naive or misguided for thinking we could persuade mainstream investors to act on climate. Today, many of the very largest investors in the world are challenging companies on climate change and sending a clear message that business as usual is no longer an option.

This vote comes at a particularly important time. President Trump reportedly is poised to announce a decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement at any moment, despite the fact that more than 1,100 businesses and 280 global investors (and even some of the President’s own team, including Secretary of State and former ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson) have encouraged him to keep the U.S. in Paris.

No matter what Trump decides, it is clear that investors are acting upon the imperative to address climate risks, that the business case for climate action is real, and that the transition to a low-carbon economy is inevitable.

Learn more about the historic moment and stay with us as we build an equitable, sustainable global economy and planet.

Thank YOU,

Sue Reid

l
l
l
---------------->

OEE - Overall Equipment Effectiveness, McKinsey

Dazu gibt's keine Folie. Und was war die Probenbasis - wirklich repräsentativ?

Aber als Tendenz denke ich OK.

__

Australia Gets Tough, on Tax; Proposals for a new tax on iron ore production in Western Australia could generate A$7.2bn for the West Australian Government, but would add around A$0.25-5.00/t to the cost of iron ore extraction –a surprising move for a state anxious to protect its industry, sooo whaaaaat's behind the move?????

"Tesla Model 3 will use entire world’s lithium ion battery supply at 500k production volume

The following article was published based on a presentation made by Tesla's CTO, JB Straubel, at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Annual Energy Fair in Custer, Wisconsin on June 16 - 18th, 2017. The article has been sourced from Teslarati (URL) and reproduced below. JB Straubel's comments reaffirm the need for new lithium projects as he states the Gigafactory, at full capacity, will consume the entire market's current production of lithium.

Article reproduced from Tesarati.com:

Tesla CTO JB Straubel spoke at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Annual Energy Fair over the weekend and shared a summary of Tesla’s progress to date.

To put the scale of Model 3 into perspective, he shared that “the Model 3 alone, when it’s at half a million vehicles per year, will use the world’s entire lithium ion battery supply.” The clarification builds on previous statements by Tesla CEO Elon Musk several years ago that the Gigafactory would produce more lithium ion cells than the entire world’s capacity at the time.

The statement by Straubel provides an updated perspective on the scale Tesla is pursuing with Model 3 and with the Gigafactory. It also spotlights just how far ahead of the competition Tesla is. If a competitor were to just throw money at electric vehicles in an attempt to gain market share, there simply would not be enough batteries in the world to supply the vehicles. More factories are being built but Tesla’s Gigafactory is proving to be a massive competitive advantage that only gets larger with every additional Tesla Gigafactory the company builds.

Straubel shared that Gigafactory 1 is already making the cells required for Model 3, noting that “we’re starting to make model 3 cells right now.” This is the first hard confirmation from a Tesla executive that Model 3 batteries are under production which bodes well for the upcoming first deliveries of Model 3 in July.

Tesla already has two Gigafactories under construction with Gigafactory 1 in Sparks, Nevada serving as the core of the company’s battery production. Gigafactory 1 will produce the new form factor 2170 cells that will be used in the Model 3 and are currently being used in Tesla’s Powerwall and Powerpack energy products. Contrary to early speculation that Tesla’s flagship vehicles would also switch to the larger 2170 battery cell, Musk confirmed that Model S and Model X will not be receiving the newer 2170 cell form factor, for now.

It’s no secret that Tesla has plans to build more Gigafactory plants across the world. The company is expected to announce the locations for each by the end of this year. Having additional Gigafactory facilities would allow Tesla to produce enough batteries to supply several million vehicles per year. With new products like the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Semi and the Tesla Pickup truck emerging in the not-so-distant future, Tesla has a pipeline of products that are sure to keep its Gigafactories busy."

- Jordan tells us about his history at Bayfield and their exploration success proving up a small resource in Ontario which was subsequently sold to New Gold. He is currently CEO of Skyharbour which is focused on early stage uranium exploration in the Athabasca region. He has built an excellent team of people including geologists, and has helped structure their initial deals and projects.

He is familiar with the mining sector in general, and likes the contrarian method of viewing markets. He has taken advantage of the depressed uranium sector, which for him created an excellent opportunity to acquire projects at a discount. They have worked with a number of industry leaders like Rick Rule and Marin Katusa.

The uranium price needs to reach over $60 for production to increase. Demand is improving for uranium as there are over fifty reactors coming online in the next three years with hundreds of new one’s planned. These reactors are much more modern, larger, safer and will need more uranium than existing reactors. The developing world needs clean energy to improve their air pollution issues.

Jordan discusses the Athabasca basin which has some of the highest grade deposits in the world and how there are new discoveries. New exploration techniques have helped find these deposits and there has been a recent change in the thinking regarding the geology of the basin.

Kazakistan is a large producer, with low costs, and there has been a lot of extra supply keeping the spot price low. KazAtomProm is looking at setting up a Swiss marketing intermediary, which will allow them to better time their sales, instead of just relying on the spot market. -

- Ronald joins us to discuss his free annual 160 page report called “In Gold we Trust”. Last year he stated that we were at the very beginning of a bull market in gold, however he says that was stopped by Donald Trump. Gold and commodities are dirt cheap when compared to stocks. Equities, bonds, and real estate are at or near their all time highs. He thinks the dollar is close to rolling over.

He calls the market the “everything bubble”, as just in the first quarter of 2017 the biggest central banks printed one trillion dollars, this is “advanced monetary surrealism”. The complacency that we are seeing in markets will likely lead to a crisis that will make 2008 look like a kindergarten party.

He talks about how recessions are normal and healthy in markets, but this is something that governments and central banks now wish to avoid. Tax receipts are falling off a cliff, loan growth is sluggish, industry is slow, and interest rates are rising. They have lost credibility over the last few years, and are trying to regain it, however he thinks they are tightening into weakness. At some point there will be talk of Fed rate reductions and discussion of another round of QE, this is when gold will make the next leg up.

In the near term their could be some further downside, he points out that gold is up when compared to most currencies of the world.

Ronald discusses mining equities and makes some comparisons, we are at a very attractive price level. Gold has experienced the longest bear market since 1942 in terms of both length and performance.

Talking Points From This Week’s Episode
• We are in the “Everything Bubble” with the exception of commodities.
• Inflation dynamics will drive gold higher, stagflation is currently occurring.
• Recession is coming, most economists are forecasting it.
• Geopolitical tensions are increasing, likely to have an effect on oil prices.
• Fed is discussing raising inflation targets to three or four percent.

Ronald-Peter Stoeferle, is a Chartered Market Technician and a Certified Financial Technician. During his studies in business administration and finance at the Vienna University of Economics and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he worked for Raiffeisen Zentralbank in the field of Fixed Income/Credit Investments. After graduating from university, Stoeferle joined Vienna based Erste Group Bank, covering International Equities, especially Asia. In 2006 he began writing reports on gold and gained media attention when he expected the price of gold to rise to USD 2,300/ounce when the current price was only at USD 500. His six benchmark reports called “In Gold we Trust” drew international coverage on CNBC, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, Economist and the Financial Times.

In 2013 he became managing director and partner of Incrementum AG, based in the Principality of Liechtenstein. The company focuses on asset management and wealth management and is one hundred percent owned by its partners. He continues to write the annual “In Gold we Trust” as a senior advisor to Erste Group. -

"Beyond Limits, an artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive computing company, today announced it has secured $20 million in Series B funding from BP Ventures, the corporate investment arm of global energy business, BP.

The investment will accelerate the delivery of industrial-grade AI software, previously used in deep space exploration missions, to combine human knowledge with machine learning and provide the energy sector with new levels of operational insight, business optimization and process automation across all operations.

Launched in 2012, Beyond Limits is a leader in AI and cognitive computing and was created to commercialize cutting edge IP developed by the team after over 20 years of success supporting NASA and the space program. With technologies proven in the unknown and extreme environment of space, Beyond Limits will adapt and deliver AI software that tackles industrial and enterprise challenges here on earth.

Meghan Sharp, Managing Director BP Ventures--Americas, will join the Beyond Limits board.

Commenting on the investment, Meghan Sharp, said; 'BP Ventures is excited to help Beyond Limits grow into new verticals, as we bring forward the pioneering work they have developed with the space program to our industry and throughout our businesses. Our investment in Beyond Limits is an example of BP's ongoing support of entrepreneurs and innovators not only inside the traditional world of oil and gas but those looking toward a new energy future.'

The BP - Beyond Limits partnership could enable a step change in the way BP locates and develops reservoirs, produces and refines crude oil and markets and supplies refined products. Beyond Limits will bring its expertise to the world of oil and gas where its AI software could support improvements in the speed and quality of decision making, manage operational risks, and harness the collective knowledge and experience of its team.

AJ Abdallat, CEO of Beyond Limits, said; 'Our goal is to create automated solutions that can think like humans and augment human capability. We are the AI company that provides solutions for problems that cannot be solved using traditional approaches.'

Morag Watson, Chief Digital Innovation Officer at BP said; 'Our strategic cooperation with Beyond Limits is a perfect fit with BP's vision of using digital technology to help transform our organisation. We believe artificial intelligence will be one of the most critical digital technologies to drive new levels of performance across the industry.'"

my PRECIOUS Congo

- Watch MORE https://rtd.rt.com/tags/illegal-mining/
The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world.

From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty.

Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations.

For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse.

US Oil Refiner mal ganz genau angucken.

Afghan OVERdose(Opium)

- Afghanistan is the world’s biggest exporter of black-market opium from which heroin is made. It’s a multi-billion dollar business, responsible for around a hundred thousand deaths every year and it’s a major source of income for terrorists. RT Doc travelled to the poppy fields where death is harvested to find out why no one can put a stop to this deadly trade.

When it comes to heroin, a non-intervention policy is still going strong in Afghanistan where over 90% of the world’s black market opium is produced. Most finds its way onto the international drug market and the profits fund organized crime and terrorist groups like ISIS, which is growing in strength here.

The dealers and manufacturers aren’t hard to find: they live in luxurious houses, have fields blooming with poppies and sell their narcotic wares in broad daylight. Even so, they still manage to evade arrest. Poppy fields are destroyed and drugs seized but it’s only ever the middle men who are punished, not the drug lords. There’s been a NATO military presence in the country for 14 years now but still, drugs production continues to grow.

Local people suffer from the drug business too, around 18% of the capital’s population are drug addicts. The places where drugs are sold and used are well known but the police are powerless to act. Mafia wars drive civilians from their land in the southern regions, forcing them into refugee camps in their own country. Opium growers get rich by plunging fellow citizens into the depths of misery.
RT Doc’s investigative team visited Afghanistan to document the Police’s losing battle against opium producers and its effect on the rest of the country. They talk to police officers, drug users and opium growers in search of a fuller picture and to ask why this massive and life-destroying industry continues to flourish.

https://www.wallstreet-online.de/diskussion/1205180-21-30/ve…
