mit Carsten Daerr am Piano und Carlos Bica, 1998 in seiner Heimat Portugal
zum Jazzmusiker des Jahres gekürt, am Bass.

Und was sagt die Presse dazu...?

...es gibt filme, die so packend und gefühlvoll gemacht sind, dass bei einigen szenen auch einem hartgesottenen rockfreak die augen feucht werden vor rührung – so wie letzte woche als die Biographie der Margarete Steiff im TV lief - mit einer Heike Makatsch in der titelrolle, die eindrucksvoll zeigen konnte, dass aus dem einstigen viva-girlie eine charakterdarstellerin geworden ist...

...wenn ich da an die szene denke, als Margarete den kindern ihren ersten süßen teddybär zeigte, das geht halt ans herz... – oder auch, als sie den auftrag auf der messe von dem amerikaner bekam, der ihren betrieb vor dem konkurs gerettet hat...

Ihre Stofftiere haben Millionen von Kindern auf ihrem Lebensweg begleitet: Die weltberühmten Steiff-Tiere. Die Erfinderin der kuscheligen Wesen war Margarete Steiff. Ihr ebenso beeindruckendes wie auch kraftvolles Leben hat Regisseur Xaver Schwarzenberg mit Heike Makatsch in der Titelrolle verfilmt.
Mit Ideenreichtum, Lebensfreude und unbezwingbarem Willen erobert sich eine junge Frau die Zukunft. In der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts scheinen der jungen Margarete Steiff wegen ihrer Körperbehinderung in der schwäbischen Provinz alle Tore verschlossen.

@cambo: bei mir sind es zwar noch keine 3 1/2 jahrzehnte(hab den song das erste mal in Mal Sondocks oldiehitparade gehört ende der 70iger, aber ansonsten geht es mir ähnlich mit diesem hammersong...


...nach langer zeit war auch wieder einer meiner absoluten lieblingssongs im set bei Rock am Ring von Iron Maiden – und Bruce kündigte den song folgendermaßen an:

This song is inspired by the 1910 classic novel of the same name by French author Gaston Leroux (1868–1927), on which the famous broadway show by Andrew Lloyd Webber is also based (go see it, it is really great). The story is basically one of love, fame and jealousy, with a gruesome character who has his lair deep under the Paris Opera House, and who perpetrates dark deeds for the love of a woman.
The Phantom, Erik, is someone whose ugliness forces him to live as a recluse away from mankind. However, his thirst for love is a strong as that of any other human being and only wants to be loved for himself. When he falls in love with Christine Daaé, a talented and beautiful young opera singer, his feelings are torn between the love he has for her and the jealousy he feels towards her fiancé, the Viscount Raoul de Chagny, and the rest of "the human race". The writing style of the novel is slightly outdated, and it is certain that, narrated by Stephen King, the novel would have been over twice as long and with more gruesome details. However, Leroux manages to captivate the reader and to unfold the story before our eyes in the most interesting manner. Those who love to read will enjoy this book.

Many films have been made about this story and the 1974 Brian De Palma film, Phantom of the Paradise is also inspired by the same story. For more information on the Phantom, check out The Phantom Of The Opera Nexus where you will find all sorts of things related to this particular topic.
In any case, this is one of Maiden`s greatest songs, and many fans` favourite of all time (next to `Hallowed Be Thy Name`). The instrumental section slowly builds from a soft and slow guitar solo into a driving rhythm which builds and builds and finally climaxes with two of the most enjoyable guitar solos ever, after which it unbuilds back the way it came. It is impossible to describe it adequately, and has to be heard to be believed. If you buy the CD only for this song, it will be well worth it.

Wo ich das so lese mit Schlagzeug aus dem rechten Kanal und so, da fällt mir spontan ein Stück ein, das ich seit 3 1/2 Jahrzehnten in schöner Regelmäßigkeit genieße. Und noch immer gefällt es mir so gut wie damals. Da wandert das Schlagzeugsolo in der LP-Version wunderbar von einem Lautsprecher zum anderen und wieder zurück. Ich meine einen der Klassiker schlechthin ...

...na denn cheers leute - aufs neue mit hoffentlich netten musikalischen überraschungen und highlights...
@wolaufensie: stimmt - in der frühzeit, als die kanäle noch nicht differenziert waren klingen monoaufnahmen einfach kompakter und stimmiger. ich habe mir gerade ein altes Venture teil besorgt, da kommt das schlagzeug aus dem rechten kanal und der rest aus dem linken. das ist dann doch immer ein zweifelhaftes dingen in sachen stereo...

gestern habe ich übrigens zufällig auch noch Brian Wilson zusammen mit den Beach Boys in originalbesetzung(noch mit den beiden 3 jahre später verstorbenen mitgliedern) in einem tollen konzert, mit ungewohnt kräftigen gitarreneinsätzen, vom Knebworth Festival 1980 gesehen. 3Sat hatte wieder an Silveste massig konzerten als „Pop around the clock“ serviert und das war eines der highlights – waren richtig gut in form – und die trackliste war gut sortiert:

...es hängt natürlich mal wieder alles mit Allem zusammen...Der Button kam mir doch irgendwie ziemlich bekannt vor...ich hab ihn auch, er liegt in dem Boxset Phil Spector back to Mono bei. Ein Klasse- Mehrfach- Album ich meine es wären 5 CDs gewesen, 4 "Sampler" und die Weihnachtsplatte . Witzig ist, dass selbst Lieder, die damals in stereo vorlagen auf Mono runtergenudelt wurden. Und es hat den Liedern wirklich gut getan. Brian Wilson fand das Lied von Spector "Then he kissed me"
vom Intro und der Rasanz her mit eines der besten Lieder, die er jemals hörte.
Und die Beach Boys nahmen es damals mit leicht verändertem Wortlaut in ihr Programm
auf, und hatten damit ebenfalls Erfolg. Allerdings klingt die Version der Crystals , und dann noch mit dem
Wall of Sound doch ein sattes Stück besser . Volle Rasanz. Hatte es noch in einer klanglich
"besseren" Version aber die schlechtere klingt Viel, - viel besser , wirklich. Mit einigen Liedern
verhält es sich wie mit Orchideen, die erblühen erst so richtig auf ganz dürrem ungastlichen Boden.

...einen song der neuen Neil Diamond scheibe gibt es in der digi-pak ausführung in zweifacher version als bonustrack – „Delirious Love“. interessant wie unterschiedlich die beiden aufnahmen arrangiert sind. die reguläre version singt Neil allein:
