      AXP American Express
      BA The Boeing Company
DD DuPont E. I. de Nemours & Co.
      DIS The Walt Disney Co.
      HPQ Hewlett-Packard
      IBM IBM
      MSFT Microsoft Corp.
      SBC SBC Communications
      VZ Verizon Comm.

      ...

Ex-dividend date: Mon Nov 15 When a stock is trading "ex-dividend" it means that a purchase at that time will not entitle the purchaser to the most recently declared dividend. The ex-dividend date for Microsoft is Monday November 15. Any purchase of MSFT on Monday or later will have a settlement date later than the record date for the dividend. It is reasonable to expect MSFT stock to decline by approximately $3 immediately upon the open on Monday. (See "Stock Price" below).

Sales for the quarter increased 16.2 percent to $9.1 billion, up from $7.8 billion in the third quarter of 2003. Comparable store sales for the third quarter increased 5.2 percent. For the nine months ended October 29, 2004, sales increased 18.3 percent to $27.9 billion. Comparable store sales increased 6.6 percent for the first nine months of 2004.

"The results our employees delivered in the third quarter are a clear indication that our stores are meeting customer needs with great products and industry leading customer service every day," explained Robert L. Tillman, Lowe`s chairman and CEO. "Continued signs of a robust housing market, improving employment and strong demographic trends provide a foundation for our optimism for the future."

"Third quarter sales performance continued our trend of consistently strong results. A 5.2 percent increase in comparable store sales on top of the 12.2 percent increase in last year`s third quarter represents the best two-year performance for Lowe`s in nearly a decade," said Lowe`s President Robert A. Niblock. "These consistent results are based on a singular, company-wide focus on serving our customers` ever-changing needs. `Improving Home Improvement` is more than a mantra, it`s what we live in every store every day, as we strive to improve the shopping experience with better products, more inspirational displays and great customer service."

During the quarter, Lowe`s opened 35 new stores including one relocation. As of October 29, 2004, Lowe`s operated 1,031 stores in 45 states representing 117.5 million square feet of retail selling space, a 13.4 percent increase over last year.

      Lowe`s Forecast Hammers Stock
Monday November 15, 4:57 pm ET
      By Karen Jacobs

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Home improvement retailer Lowe`s Cos. (NYSE:LOW - News) on Monday reported a 15 percent rise in third-quarter profit, aided by its expansion to New York and other big U.S. markets, but its stock slumped on a disappointing outlook.
The company said it expects fourth-quarter profit to be in line with or slightly below analysts` estimates, and its shares eased as much as 4 percent. Analysts said many investors were hoping for a stronger forecast.

Analysts also focused on Lowe`s gross margins, which were down when the effects of an accounting change were excluded.

Third-quarter net income rose to $522 million, or 66 cents a diluted share, from $452 million, or 56 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts` average forecast was 65 cents a share, according to Reuters Estimates.

Lowe`s posted strong sales of outdoor power equipment, cabinets and countertops in the quarter but said gross margins were hurt by higher distribution expenses and freight costs and damaged goods from recent hurricanes in the U.S. Southeast.

"People have more confidence in the margin story at Home Depot," said Eric Bosshard of FTN Midwest Research. At Lowe`s, "I think people are a little bit concerned that you`re not getting the margin progress," he said.

Bosshard said Home Depot, which is to report quarterly earnings on Tuesday, was expected to deliver solid results from its store improvements, which include remodelings and technology upgrades. Home Depot is the top U.S. home improvement retailer.

Lowe`s, based in Mooresville, North Carolina, forecast fourth-quarter earnings of 58 cents to 60 cents a share. Analysts` average forecast is 60 cents, according to Reuters Estimates.

"It is likely that many investors were expecting the company to set fourth-quarter earnings-per-share guidance ahead of consensus views," Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Cox said in a research note.

Robert Niblock, Lowe`s president, said the company is generally "somewhat conservative" in judging the weather-sensitive fourth quarter, which includes winter months.

"It`s our job to put guidance out there that we feel comfortable we can achieve," Niblock said.

Lowe`s third-quarter sales rose 16 percent to $9.1 billion. Sales at stores open at least a year rose 5.2 percent, compared with a rise of 12 percent a year earlier.

The company forecast fourth-quarter same-store sales would rise by 4 percent to 5 percent.

Though Lowe`s has delivered solid earnings as it expands to big U.S. cities, it now faces tougher earnings and sales comparisons compared with a year ago and stiff competition in a number of product categories, particularly appliances.

Lehman Brothers analyst Alan Rifkin said rising interest rates could limit earnings upside in 2005. Both Lowe`s and Home Depot have benefited over the past few years as low rates have spurred home purchases and mortgage refinancings.

For the year, Lowe`s forecast profit of $2.69 to $2.71 a share, including the impact of an accounting change. Analysts expect $2.72 a share, according to Reuters Estimates.

Lowe`s shares were down $1 to $59.25 at the close on the New York Stock Exchange after falling as low as $57.75 earlier in the session. Home Depot shares were up 57 cents to $43.79.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world`s largest retailer, said Tuesday that third-quarter earnings increased nearly 13 percent year-over-year on strong international sales and higher same-store sales at the company`s Sam`s Club stores.

Home Depot Reports Strong 3Q Earnings
Tuesday November 16, 6:58 am ET
By Harry R. Weber, AP Business Writer
The Home Depot Reports a Nearly 15 Percent Jump in Third-Quarter Earnings on Strong Sales

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Home Depot Inc., the nation`s largest home improvement store chain, reported a nearly 15 percent jump in third-quarter earnings on strong sales, particularly at stores open at least a year.

The results, announced before the market opened Tuesday, beat Wall Street expectations and prompted the Atlanta-based company to raise its full-year earnings estimates.

For the three months ending Oct. 31, Home Depot said it earned $1.32 billion, or 60 cents a share, compared to a profit of $1.15 billion, or 50 cents a share, a year ago. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call were expecting earnings of 57 cents a share.

Revenue in the quarter rose 13.1 percent to $18.77 billion from $16.60 billion recorded in the same three-month period a year ago.

Same-store sales -- a measure that compares sales at stores open at least a year -- increased 4.5 percent in the quarter.

Based on the results, Home Depot said it was raising its fiscal 2004 earnings per share growth guidance to 19 percent to 20 percent. It had earlier expected earnings per share growth for the year of 14 percent to 17 percent.

"The strength of our core retail business, coupled with our growing services and professional supply businesses, is delivering solid returns," said chairman and chief executive Bob Nardelli. "Our business strategy of enhancing the core, extending the business and expanding our markets is clearly driving consistent, profitable sales growth. Additionally, in the face of a record number of hurricanes in the Southeast, our stores remained open and our associates and suppliers worked tirelessly to take care of our customers, and I want to thank them."

For the first nine months of the year, Home Depot earned $3.96 billion, or $1.78 a share, compared to a profit of $3.35 billion, or $1.46 a share, a year ago. Home Depot said the effect of an accounting change resulted in a reduction of net earnings of $108 million, or 5 cents a share, in the first nine months of the year. Nine-month revenue was $56.28 billion, compared to $49.69 billion a year ago.

Home Depot operates 1,826 stores in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Earlier this year, it said it plans to open stores in China, but did not say when or how many.

On Monday, the chain`s chief rival, Lowe`s Cos., said its earnings rose 15.5 percent in the third quarter on a 16.2 percent increase in sales. Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe`s said it earned $522 million, or 66 cents a share, in the quarter, beating Wall Street`s expectations by a penny a share.
