Andes Energia "due a dead cow bounce?"
      www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk/companies/news/71345/andes-ener…

"Reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were given some invaluable advice when investigating the Watergate burglary that led to President Nixon’s demise.

“Follow the money,” said their informant Deep Throat.

Investors should also take note. When the smart money starts heading into a stock or a particular country it is time to sit up and take notice.

There are few shrewder investors than George Soros, who, with a personal fortune US$28bn, goes all in when he sees the right opportunity.

He is the man who famously drove the pound out of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism, and has built a reputation and a fortune making a series of ballsy bets on the politics and economics of emerging markets.

It is interesting, then, to see him shore up his position in YPF, Argentina’s state controlled oil and gas firm.

The 84-year-old’s family office, Soros Fund Management, added a further 8.47mln shares to its portfolio on Thursday and is now sitting on a 3.5% stake in the business valued at US$450mln.

And he’s is not alone: Perry Capital, an US$11bn hedge fund run by investors Richard Perry and Dan Loeb, has added significantly to its holding.

They are doing so more than two years after Argentina seized a 51% stake in YPF from Repsol – a corporate mugging for which the Spaniards have since been compensated – and amid an escalating row over the country’s debt default.

So, why the interest? Two words: dead cow. That sounds a little cryptic. But in Spanish the translation is Vaca Muerta, the name of the largest shale play outside North America.

Located in the barely inhabited region of Patagonia in the south of the country, the play covers an area the size of Belgium and is thought to contain 600 billion barrels of oil in place (30 billion recoverable) and 1,000 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Its characteristics are similar to those of the prolific Eagle Ford in Texas, although the shales are much thicker at 100-300 metres.

This is important as it allows those active in the area to drill vertically and frack, rather than go horizontally. This makes it both cheaper to drill than the Eagle Ford or Marcellus shales and provides for a far more efficient use of the acreage.

There have been 250 wells drilled since the discovery of the Vaca Muerta in 2010, with a further 150 planned this year alone.

And suddenly there is interest in the area now Argentina is becoming a politically less risky proposition.

Significantly the area is starting to attract the attention of the super-majors; Chevron and Petronas are currently working in harness with YPF, ExxonMobil made its first Vaca Muerta discovery in May and Shell and Total are also there.

Interestingly there is a clutch of smaller companies that also ran in the opposite direction when many of their bigger and more illustrious rivals were dashing for the exit in the wake of 2012’s YPF nationalisation.

Among this hardy band of explorers is AIM listed Andes Energia (LON:AEN), which has a huge chunk of the Vaca Muerta.

Andes has 213,000 net acres, containing 500mln barrels of certified prospective recoverable resources.

So, using the price paid by Chevron to get into the Vaca Muerta as a benchmark (it stumped up US$12,000 an acre), the AIM-listed group’s assets should be worth in excess of US$2bn.

Broker GMP describes Andes as “unique” among the companies listed in London as it is the market’s only firm with direct exposure to the Vaca Muerta.

At the same time, conventional oil production in the order of 1,400 barrels a day underpins the AIM share’s valuation.

According to the forecasts of GMP analyst Ritesh Gaggar, the stock is worth 90p a share – more than double its current 41p share price.

He estimates Andes will generate US$27mln over the next two years as it grows conventional production to 2,100 barrels of oil per day (bopd) by 2015 and then to 3,700 bopd by 2017.

The group has conventional reserves of 20mln barrels of oil equivalent, which Gaggar values at 18p per share. He estimates the conventional ‘upside’ at about 107p per share.

Gaggar details a number of potential catalysts for the AIM share: a proxy effect relating to Argentina’s rising oil production; the development of Vaca Muerta, or as he calls it “the big international shale opportunity”.

“Andes’ majority partner in the Vaca Muerta is YPF, the integrated oil and gas company that has been majority owned by the Argentine state since 2012,” he said.

“YPF’s aggressive plans can be viewed as a proxy for Argentina’s desire for production growth. This will necessarily involve development of the Vaca Muerta, our blue sky M&A valuation of which provides around 500% of upside to Andes’ share price.”

      Profile

Andes Energia is a Latin American group, active in exploration, development and production of Oil and Gas from conventional and unconventional resources. The total consolidated acreage of Andes’ assets is 7.4 million acres of exploration with 20 MMbbl reserves and 596.13 MMbbl of prospective resources. Listed on AIM London Stock Exchange and Buenos Aires Stock Exchange, Andes combines a highly qualified E&P professional team with world class exploration and development assets. "

      versuche gerade, mir eine fundierte(re) Meinung zum Ölpreis/-markt zuzulegen;

in dem Kontext sammle ich (wie früher) unternehmensunabhängige Quellen und versuche sie in einem

Thread: Ölpreise überverkauft: Gründe für den Absturz der Öl-Notierungen

      zu sammeln.

Mich würde interessieren, was Du davon hältst, insbesondere #12
