At the German location, worldwide research activities of the group are
pooled
With the inauguration of its new Research and Development Center in
Freiberg/Saxony, SolarWorld AG confirms its dedication to the solar
location of Germany. The group invested a total of EUR 55 million, among
others in the solar cell and module laboratories. 110 people employed in
research and development are working on new processes that will optimize
the efficiency of solar power products and cut permanently the costs of
solar power technology.
´With our new Research and Development Center, we are not just securing our
quality edge vis-à-vis international competitors but we are also creating
the potential for further cost reductions, ´ explains Dr.-Ing. E. h. Frank
Asbeck, chairman and CEO of SolarWorld AG. ´In a short time, we will reach
grid parity, and self-made power from the roof will be cheaper for
everybody than electricity from the socket, and in addition storable.´
In Freiberg, the worldwide research activities of the group are pooled and
then go into the optimization and further development of the highly
efficient crystalline solar power technology. In doing so, the company
banks on the innovative strength and the technological know-how of German
science. Proximity to production makes it possible to implement the
research results in production straight away. Research and development take
place along the entire photovoltaic value chain, for example in the
optimization of silicon crystallization and the increase in the degree of
efficiency of crystalline solar cells.
The Research and Development Center has a total area of 10,500 square
meters. This is where processes and plants of the next generation are
tested on a near-production scale, to some extent under clean room
conditions. In addition, there are laboratories for development,
reliability testing and quality assurance as well as office space. Together
with the wafer laboratory already inaugurated in 2009 and some smaller
research institutes and technology companies in the vicinity of the center,
an exemplary Europe-wide technology and innovation campus has been created
in Freiberg.
