SAMSUNG Electronics Mass Produces World’s First Smart Card Chip with Onboard 128KB EEPROM

Seoul Korea, July 28, 2003-SAMSUNG Electronics Co., Ltd., a leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced a high 128KB EEPROM integrated smart card chip. The industry’s largest 128KB EEPROM capacity enables the smart card chip to support diverse applications such as USIM/UIM cards for GSM and IMT 2000 handsets, Java cards, multimedia productions and other IT areas. The new device, product code S3CC9ED, is now available in mass production.

SAMSUNG’s new smart card chip integrates a 128KB EEPROM, 384KB ROM and 8KB static RAM. The advanced features fully satisfies manufacturers’ requirements for high-performance smart cards and SIM cards with the high-capacity EEPROM enabling a broader variety of data storage and services such as games, Internet services, telephone directory and short message service.

The S3CC9ED has a Samsung designed 16-bit CalmRISC CPU and 3-DES symmetrical key encryption standard implemented ensuring rapid and highly reliable user verification. An attack prevention design technology has also been applied to protect personal data from unauthorized approaches.

A hardware universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) is included to support the ISO 7816 smart card standard communication protocol. Thus, realizing fast and stable data communication between the card reader and the smart card along with more enhanced efficiencies for system designers.

“The higher memory capacity supports the international demand for data intensive features in next generation mobile handsets.” says Chung Chul-hee vice president of Samsung Electronics’ smart card development team,” SAMSUNG’s 128KB EEPROM integrated smart chard chip will expedite the introduction of higher performance smart cards and multimedia services for 3G mobile phones.”

SAMSUNG developed the S3CC9ED last November and has already received qualification from major smart card makers. Mass production and shipment began in the second quarter of 2003. SAMSUNG is focusing on high-performance smart card chips, building a full lineup of devices for each type of memory to provide customers with a much wider range of choices. At the same time,

SAMSUNG continues to develop and mass-produce devices with high-capacity flash memory, enhanced CPU performance, and built-in crypto processors to enhance security.

According to a recent report from Dataquest, the Smart Card market is expected to reach approximately 800 million units this year and grow an average of 19% per annum, to 1.4 billion units in 2006.
