ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2000--

Company Leverages Leadership Position to Extend Network Services for
Customer Base Encompassing Nearly 70 percent of U.S. DSL Market

Redback Networks (Nasdaq:RBAK) will highlight its market leadership position at SUPERCOMM this week by demonstrating its full spectrum of products for building the New Access Network.
Redback will showcase its Subscriber Management System(TM) (SMS) 10000 and newly introduced metro optical networking platform, the SmartEdge(TM) 800. Both the SMS and SmartEdge solutions were designed with the common goal of helping Redback`s extensive base of more than 190 carrier and service provider customers evolve their legacy networks to next-generation infrastructures that enable high-margin dynamic services.
(Editors Note: Redback`s SmartEdge 800 will be on display in live demonstrations this week at the SUPERCOMM Trade Show in Atlanta at booth 2929, June 6 - 8, 2000.)
Redback continued to lead in production deployments of broadband subscriber management systems at the end of the first quarter, 2000. According to market research firm Telechoice (Denver, Colo.), nearly 70 percent of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) traffic in North America traveled through a handful of major carriers, including SBC, Bell Atlantic, GTE, UUNet, Qwest and Covad. All of these carriers are Redback customers.
"Redback is already the industry standard in subscriber management systems and is rapidly making progress in the metro optical equipment market," said Ajay Diwan, vice president at Goldman Sachs. "We believe that first mover advantage is particularly important in the subscriber management market. Redback`s installed base of SMSs are at the nucleus of broadband networks, managing the critical link between the local network and the Internet. Once installed, the software intensive nature of this platform makes it very difficult to switch to a competitor`s product."
Last week, Redback further extended its market leadership in developing equipment for the New Access Network with the introduction of the SmartEdge platform. The SmartEdge is in beta trials with Qwest, Genuity (a business unit of GTE); and Dutch service provider Cistron; the platform will be available in the third quarter of 2000.
