AdultShop.com gets whipped
15/09/03 By: Sarah Richards

AdultShop.com Limited (ASC) today posted a net loss of $9.5 million for FY03 compared with a $4.1 million profit in the prior year. The provider of adult products and services highlighted the inclusion of a $7.38 million write-off of goodwill at its online erotic entertainment division.

Revenues from ordinary activities dropped 28.3% to $84.1 million and the loss per share for the year was 3.1c. This compared to an earnings per share of 1.4c last year.

AdultShop.com advised that a number of issues impacted upon the current and future profitability of its online erotic entertainment division. This included proposed changes to Visa and MasterCard credit card billing regulations that enforced stricter requirements in regards to chargeback and refund thresholds.

“As a result of the proposed changes, a number of third party credit card processing organisations have already decided to discontinue processing credit card transactions for the online erotic entertainment industry.”

However, the company said the division was currently profitable and cash flow positive, but the recent announcement by Visa and MasterCard threatened to undermine its future financial performance.

Focusing on its wholly owned subsidiary Calvista Australia Pty Ltd, the company said the business has successfully maintained its profit performance through continued sales of recognised adult brands.

“The 2004 financial year sees Calvista reinforcing its position in the Australian adult wholesale industry and growing sales accordingly,” the group forecast.

Looking at its mail order operations, AdultShop.com said its subscriber base continued to grow. Meanwhile, the company posted a 30% fall in revenue at its Australian internet retail operations.

AdultShop.com said the US market was proving difficult to grow sales and build a sustainable long-term operation.

Concluding, the company advised that one of its subsidiaries had been served with a summon in relation to the supply of internet traffic by a subsidiary of Dark Blue Sea Limited (DBS).

“Today’s Success Pty Ltd has lodged a Defence and Counterclaim for amounts overpaid to the supplier as a result of a discount previously agreed by both parties and not allowed for in the invoices issued by the supplier.”

AdultShop.com did not declare a dividend.

AdultShop.com closed down 0.4c on Friday to 6.6c, dropping 82% since June 2002.
