Jakarta To Sell More Stakes In Four Banks

JAKARTA (IO) — Finance Minister Bambang Sudibyo said yesterday that
the government would divest stakes in Bank BCA BBCA, Bank Niaga, Bank
International Indonesia (BII), and Bank Universal to reduce its
ownership to below 50 % in each of the banks.

The minister said that the government would proceed with the plan as
soon as the parliament give its approval.

Responding to the proposal, head of the parliamentary economic
commission Sukowaluyo Mintorahardjo said parliament would form a
small team to study the issue further.

The government, through the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency
(IBRA), now owns 70.3 percent of BCA, 68.6% of Bank Universal, 56.8%
of BII, and 98% of Bank Niaga.

On Monday Bank BCA closed at Rp1,425, Bank Universal closed at Rp100,
Bank Niaga at Rp100, and BII at Rp100. The government is under
pressure from the International Monetary Fund to move more quickly to
offload a huge array of assets it took over during the country’s
economic crisis.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives (DPR) told the government to
first resolve its legal dispute with the founding family of scandal-
it PT Bank Bali before pushing ahead with the bank’s recapitalization.

Earlier this month, the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA)
said it would recapitalize the bank, which has been at the center of
the politically charged scandal since last year, despite the legal
issues. “(Parliament) cannot yet agree on the recapitalization plan
now,” Sukowaluyo was quoted by Reuters as saying.

Finance Minister Bambang Sudibyo later told reporters the government
would try for an out-of-court settlement to end the legal dispute.

Rudy Ramli, former head of Bank Bali which was founded by his family,
on Monday told Reuters he did not want to continue negotiations with
the government and was prepared to take his case to the Supreme Court.
