RESEARCH ALERT-Julius Baer upgrades Alstom

PARIS, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Julius Baer upgraded French heavy engineering firm Alstom (Paris:ALSO.PA - News) to "buy" from "reduce" on confidence management can reduce costs and signs of positive business activity, market sources said on Tuesday.
Alstom on Monday posted a 22.4 percent slide in third-quarter sales to 3.98 billion euros, after a brush with bankruptcy stifled business, but it said orders were improving as client confidence returned.
Alstom stock gained 11.4 percent to 1.57 euros by 0928 GMT.
