(NasdaqSC:VSNT - News) swung to a fiscal first- quarter profit as the data management company was helped by lower costs and an 8.8% rise in revenue. In a press release Wednesday, Versant reported net income of $605,000, or 3 cents a share - its highest quarterly profit in three years. In the year-earlier first quarter, the company posted a loss of $664,000, or 5 cents a share. Versant`s revenue for the quarter ended Jan. 31 rose to $6.4 million from $5.8 million a year earlier, bolstered by a 15% gain in license revenue. The company`s operating expense declined 2% to $3.9 million from $4 million a year earlier. Versant`s licensing costs also posted a significant decline for the quarter, falling to $47,000 from $777,000 a year earlier. Shares of Versant recently rose 9.9% in after-hours trading to $2.33, according to Inet. The shares closed the regular Nasdaq market session at $2.12, up 17 cents, or 8.8%.
