Cubic Receives $21 million Option Award from SPAWAR for U.S. Navy`s Communications Data Link System Value to San Diego-Based Team May Reach $93 million as Options Are Exercised to Support Network-Centric Warfare

SAN DIEGO, Mar 30, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Cubic Defense Applications, the
defense segment of Cubic Corporation (AMEX: CUB), has received a $20.650M
contract option award from the U.S. Navy`s Space and Naval Warfare Systems
Command (SPAWAR) for the Navy`s Communications Data Link (CDL) System. The CDL
System Block 1 is a wideband Common Data Link for the transmission of signal and
imagery intelligence data between national/tactical reconnaissance aircraft and
Navy surface ships.

The contract option includes orders for seven CDL Systems, test fixtures, spares
and engineering services.

"This contract award comes immediately after a successful design performance
test and critical design review completed in January 2004," said Rick Lober,
senior vice president and general manager for Cubic`s Communications &
Electronics Business Unit. "Shipboard installation of the CDL System will begin
in 2005 and continue throughout the next several years. The award of this first
major option within the contract validates the Navy`s confidence in Cubic to
deliver these critical systems for major ships which will lead to true `network
centric` warfare capabilities," he added.

In 2003, Cubic received the initial contract award for the development,
manufacture, enhancement, maintenance, and system test and evaluation of the CDL
systems. This option award represents the first of four options which, if fully
exercised, would bring the total contract value to $93 million.

Cubic formed a strong San Diego-based team, including ViaSat, Inc. and AMSEC LLC
to deliver a system using state-of-the-art programmable radio, reduced sized
antenna and secure data technology. The resulting system will yield significant
operational improvements and life-cycle cost reductions compared to current
shipboard data link systems in use today.

The system is now being promoted for future classes of surface and subsurface
ships, along with a tactical version of the system suitable for airborne and
ground-based platforms within all armed services.

The Cubic Defense Applications group, one of Cubic`s two major segments,
provides realistic combat training systems for military forces as well as
simulation, force modernization, educational services and operations &
maintenance and manufacturing services. The group also supplies products and
systems for C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence,
Surveillance & Reconnaissance) applications, search and rescue avionics and
radio communications for military and civil markets. The corporation`s other
major segment, Cubic Transportation Systems, designs and manufactures automatic
fare collection systems for public mass transit authorities. For more
