Barron`s Overview of Cubic Should Draw Attention The March 13 issue of Barron`s does a fine overview of Cubic Corporation (AMEX: CUB), reiterating much of which Sven Monberg has mentioned Cubic`s commanding lead in developing smartcard technology for mass-transit networks, and combat training systems for the military have resulted in net income rising more than ten-fold over the past ten years. The fiscal year that ended September 30 reported a 24 percent increase in earnings to $36.5 million. Operating profits for the latest reported quarter were exceptionally strong in the defense business, nearly doubling year-over-year to $8.6 million, largely due to an increase in military demand for air and ground combat training systems. Current year consensus earnings estimates are around $1.30 and $1.58-$1.60 for fiscal 2005. As Monberg has pointed out before, the substantial backlog (currently about $1.6 billion) clears the horizon for the foreseeable future, in businesses that appear to have steadily increasing demand, some multiple expansion to the consensus 2005 estimates is likely. |
