Washington, July 16 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. National Institutes of Health will receive an additional $50 million over the next five years for Alzheimer`s disease research, the Associated Press reported, citing a statement from President Bill Clinton. The funds are to build on findings released last week by the pharmaceutical company Elan Corp., which said that preliminary results from the first human study of a possible Alzheimer`s vaccine suggests the compound is safe, AP said. Scientists said it is too soon to tell if the vaccine will help Alzheimer`s patients, the news agency said. The Alzheimer`s Association said in a statement today that Congress should increase appropriations for Alzheimer`s research for fiscal year 2001 by $100 million. (AP 7/16). |
