Chipmakers Beef-Up for 2002

Intel is busy ordering a ton of next-generation litho machines, called 193-nm wavelength argon fluoride excimer-laser scanners, for its
first use of copper interconnects and 300-mm wafer processing. That will allow Intel to make MPUs at 0.13-micron design rules at three
new fabs, as well as upgrade lithography systems later at older fabs.

But what about archrival AMD? The company plans to go into 2002 with its existing MPU fabs in Austin, Texas, and Dresden,
Germany, using current-generation, 248-nm krypton fluoride lithography. But its vendor, ASM Lithography of Holland, says those
exposure tools can reach 0.15-micron capability, and perhaps lower, using well-established technology.
