Post receivership, new drivers for De Lane

LONDON -- While the bankruptcy of Elie Samaha`s Franchise Pictures was making big news in the U.S. last week, another Franchise-connected operation entered financial receivership.

Sound facility De Lane Lea, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year when it was purchased by a Samaha-affiliated firm, Acena, was placed in receivership Aug. 11, to re-emerge Aug. 12 with new owners and a nearly identical name.

And the confusion over the names of the former De Lane Lea and the current De Lane Lea Post Production is the simplest part of the tale.

According to De Lane Lea spokesperson Gemma Richardson, Samaha`s former partner David Bergstein was the owner of Acena, which bought De Lane Lea last year. "Bergstein has sold his interest in the firm to the new management team and has no shares in the new firm," Richardson said.

According to sources involved with Acena`s purchase of De Lane Lea, Acena was Elie Samaha, Ron Tudor and David Bergstein.

Acena`s purchase of the facility was reported last year, while another report published in May 2003 out of Cannes noted, "Samaha and partner David Bergstein are 10 days away from closing a deal to buy a London post-production facility out of which they plan to base their production and distribution operations."

The report went on to list several projects that were to be "steered toward the U.K." to benefit from tax advantages. Those included "Monkeyface," "Tristan and Isolde" and "A Sound of Thunder."

But according to Richardson, who joined De Lane Lea in January, "the only Franchise project that came through here in the past year was `Chaos,` which used some cutting rooms. We`ve been busy with `Harry Potter (news - web sites)` and `King Arthur,` so I`m not sure we would have had room for anything else."

In a statement issued in London on Monday, De Lane Lea Post Production noted these changes would "enable the company to pursue its future growth and profitability strategy."
