Manpower-Transfer von Sun zu AMD

Inquirer:

AMD poaches Sun designers in chip putsch, er, push

AMD HAS poached around 60 processor design staff from Sun Microsystems to set up a new design team in Boston.
The move has come about because of the cancellation of two processor projects, including the UltraSparc V, by Sun.
With lots of engineers in the area now kicking their heels, AMD seems to think it makes sense to bag the lot of `em to start working on new AMD designs. It is expected that they will be prioritising designs for mobile and server markets, the areas where AMD is focusing its attack on la Intella.

The move follows AMD`s expansion eastward over the summer, setting up engineering centres in Bangalore and Tokyo - part of AMD`s drive to use local talent where possible.

Microprocessor Report Editor Kevin Krewell is quoted on ZDNet UK as hypothesising that this will allow AMD to run two fully independent teams to deliver two products at the same time. We would suspect that this would give AMD substantially more punching power when it comes to product launches.

Rumour has it that the new engineers were all given university-style lectures on designing chips the AMD way. Sheesh
