Acacia Research Affiliate, CombiMatrix Corporation, Granted U.S. Patent for Biochip Array Processor System PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 1, 2000--Acacia Research Corporation (Nasdaq:ACRI) today announced that its majority-owned affiliate, CombiMatrix Corporation, has been granted a United States patent for its biochip array processor system, which enables quick and economical turnaround of custom-designed microarrays for use in biological research. This is the first U.S. patent issued to the Seattle, Wash. area-based biotechnology company. The patent covers CombiMatrix`s core technology, which is a method for producing microarrays by synthesizing biological materials on a three-dimensional, active surface. The technology was developed by Chief Technology Officer Donald Montgomery Ph.D., an electrochemist and a founder of CombiMatrix. "The sequencing of the genome has created an incredibly rich resource of information," said Gerald Knudson, CombiMatrix`s Chief Executive Officer. "But right now it`s just raw data. Researchers need powerful and efficient tools such as microarrays to turn that information into something meaningful and useful. This patent strengthens CombiMatrix`s ability to produce customized microarrays quickly and cost-effectively without the use of complicated robotics or expensive re-tooling, and brings us closer to our ultimate goal of lowering costs and risks associated with research and development." CombiMatrix`s system uses electrochemistry and semiconductor technology for biological applications. The microarray chip consists of thousands of tiny chemical "virtual flasks" arranged in a grid pattern on the surface of a semiconductor wafer. The virtual flasks are the thickness of a human hair and are separated using special solutions instead of physical walls. Each virtual flask has electronic circuitry that is directed by a computer to construct a unique chemical compound. The chips, which can be easily customized to meet the specifications of an individual research function, are then used for scientific testing. "This patent is a significant part of our strategy to provide protection for our technology and intellectual property portfolio," said Patrick de Maynadier, CombiMatrix`s Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. "This strategy permits us to concentrate on furthering the application of the technology." In addition to this patent, CombiMatrix has 22 patent applications pending worldwide. Acacia Research owns 61.4% of CombiMatrix Corporation. About CombiMatrix Corporation Founded in 1995, CombiMatrix develops research tools for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
