Banker jailed over insider trading

A City banker has been jailed for five years for making around £2 million through insider trading.
Nicknamed the Walrus, Asif Butt, used his position at Credit Suisse First Boston to make last minute investments just before major financial announcements.
By using a ring of four old school friends he made around £265,000 - although police think the figure is closer to £2 million.
Mr Butt, aged 35, of Ash Close, Garston, Hertfordshire, passed classified information to the friends, all of whom were found guilty of conspiring with him to commit the crimes.
He took the majority of the money made to feed his gambling addiction.
Judge Christopher Ewen told Southwark Crown Court that Mr Butt`s actions were a "flagrant, calculated and deliberate breach of trust on his part".
The judge made it clear that it was important to find people like Mr Butt and his accomplices.
He said: "If investors, large and small, come to the view that they cannot trust the market and that people are habitually stealing a market on them, the health of the financial services industry . . . will suffer severely."
Mr Butt is thought to be the first City compliance officer to be found guilty of insider trading.
