3Com Defends Technology Leadership With Patent Infringement Suit Against Xircom

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 18, 2000--3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) today took further steps in its efforts to protect certain intellectual property associated with the structure and features of its award-winning PC Cards, as well as technology developed in connection with its research and development efforts in the area of PC cards. On May 26, 2000, 3Com filed a complaint for patent infringement against Xircom (Nasdaq:XIRC) in the United States District Court for the District of Utah. 3Com had withheld serving the complaint in an effort to negotiate a reasonable business solution to the dispute, but the parties have not been able to come to terms. 3Com has therefore served Xircom with the complaint and will now pursue protection of its intellectual property rights in the courts.

As a leader in mobile connectivity, 3Com develops simple and reliable solutions that keep customers connected to vital information -- regardless of where they travel. 3Com Megahertz PC Cards use innovative technology to deliver the industry`s fastest network connections and offer a host of features to overcome the hassles often associated with remote network access. 3Com has been issued 387 U.S. patents for various networking and other inventions.

"3Com carefully protects the intellectual property that enables us to deliver best-of-class connectivity solutions and promotes a fair, competitive market," said Jef Graham, senior vice president and general manager of 3Com`s Commercial and Consumer Business Unit. "We proactively employed reasonable business means to resolve the issue outside of the courts, but were unable to reach a resolution with Xircom."

The litigation is based on two sets of 3Com patents. The first patent describes a "contact block" that facilitates electrical connection between a plug at the end of a communication line and a host device (U.S. Patent No. 6,012,953, Surface Mountable Electrical Connector System).

The second series of patents refers to 3Com`s exclusive Digital Line Guard technology, which protects the PC Card, and potentially the PC, from damage due to excessive voltage if accidentally connected to digital or PBX phone lines. 3Com was awarded three patents for this technology (U.S. Patents 5,532,898, 5,696,660 and 5,777,836).
