Ericsson, WorldCom to develop mobile IP technology
STOCKHOLM, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson said on Monday it would work with WorldCom (NasdaqNM:WCOM - news) of the U.S. on new technologies and products for Internet Protocol (IP) networking needs of mobile operators.

Ericsson said in a statement it would work with WorldCom unit UUNET to develop products for the migration of second generation of mobile telephony, called General Packet Radio Services (GPRS), towards fully Internet compatible mobile networks.

Later this year the two companies would also conduct joint trials of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) software, which enables mobile phones to surf the Internet, and GPRS, which enables the user to stay permanently on-line, but is slower than the still-to-come third generation technology.

``By combining Ericsson`s knowledge of wireless technologies with UUNET`s Internet network knowledge, we can offer mobile operators more complete and integrated IP solutions,`` Ericsson`s vice president for strategy and marketing Torbjorn Nilsson said.

Ericsson has long been targeting the so-called ``mobile Internet`` as the future of mobile telephony, expecting one billion mobile Internet users by 2003.

The company already has a market share of more than half of the world`s third generation mobile telephony (UMTS) networks enabling fast transmission of large amounts of data like video and graphics onto mobile phones.

``In particular, those solutions will provide the necessary basis for launching innovative IP based multimedia services that will be the fundamental driving force for third generation wireless networks in the years ahead,`` Nilsson said in the statement.

UUNET`s Chief Executive Bob Hartnett said in the statement he estimated the mobile Internet market would be worth at least $100 billion by 2004.
