3Com Achieves Significant Manufacturing Milestones
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 21, 2000--

Worldwide Manufacturing Facilities Achieve ISO 14001 Certification; 3Com Named One of IndustryWeek`s "World`s 100 Best-Managed Companies"

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) today announced it has achieved two significant manufacturing milestones that demonstrate the company`s commitment to the highest-caliber manufacturing and supply chain operations. First, the company`s Santa Clara, Calif. manufacturing facility received ISO 14001 certification, making 3Com one of the first Bay Area networking manufacturers to receive this internationally recognized symbol of excellence in the management of environment issues and operations within an organization. Second, 3Com was included in IndustryWeek Magazine`s annual roster of the "World`s 100 Best-Managed Companies."

"In our last fiscal year, one of 3Com`s objectives was to streamline and improve our operations," said John McClelland, 3Com`s senior vice president of Supply Chain Operations. "The ISO 14001 certification, combined with the IndustryWeek recognition, demonstrate 3Com has positioned itself as a leader in supply chain and manufacturing operations. These accomplishments, in addition the resulting bottom-line benefit through supply chain improvements, clearly communicate that 3Com is on track for success."

During the past fiscal year, 3Com centralized its manufacturing, which helped it make it a leader in the networking industry for important supply chain metrics. These metrics include cash-to-cash cycle and inventory turns. 3Com reduced the number of days it took to receive payment for products after paying for supplies by more than 50 percent to 30 days during FY2000. 3Com also increased inventory turns to 8.0 during FY2000, and it has further improvements planned. At the same time, 3Com achieved ISO 14001 certification at all of the company`s worldwide manufacturing facilities, demonstrating the company`s commitment to environmentally friendly corporate practices by minimizing the environmental impact of all aspects of its manufacturing.

The ISO 14001 standard is an internationally recognized symbol of excellence in the management of environmental issues and operations within an organization. The standard is used as a guidance tool and a model on which to base a successful approach to the control of environmental issues of an organization`s activities, products and services.

By controlling environmental emissions consistent with the ISO 14001 guidelines, 3Com is contributing to a healthier living environment in the community and in the world. Minimizing waste generation reduces demands on raw materials and lowers the burden on waste disposal facilities. Diverting reduced wastes to recycling options fuels resource and economic regeneration.

With the certification of 3Com`s Santa Clara manufacturing facilities, 3Com has attained ISO 14001 certification in each of its global manufacturing sites, including its supply chain integration center in Dublin and its Singapore manufacturing facility. In addition, the company previously received ISO 9001 certification at each of these facilities.

In addition to the ISO 14001 certification, 3Com has been included on this year`s IndustryWeek list of the "World`s 100 Best-Managed Companies." The annual list recognizes manufacturing companies that excel not only financially, but also set the standard in areas such as innovation, leadership, globalization, alliances and partnerships, employee benefits and education, and community involvement.
