Sharp Microelectronics Further Supports Smart Card Initiative with Integration of Biometrics Technology from OmniPerception

Published on 04/27/2004

High security and verification software enables fast and accurate facial recognition solutions

WASHINGTON D.C., Card Tech/SecurTech Conference, Booth #849, and CAMAS, Wash, April 26, 2004 - Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas and OmniPerception Ltd. announces the compatibility of the OmniPerception face recognition technology with Sharp Smart Card technology, a high performance “one card” solution with built-in 1MB Flash memory that has the ability to store a greater variety of data within an extremely secure environment. This relationship supports each company’s initiatives to bring application engineers the fastest, most secure platform for high security applications.

As the focus on critical identification technologies for homeland security and access control is increasing, having the ability to integrate technology like OmniPerception’s facial biometrics software and verification algorithms onto Sharp’s Smart Card gives engineers access to the ideal solution for robust security applications. Through this collaboration, Sharp’s high performance Smart Card technology now has the capability to easily integrate OmniPerception’s FacialPIN software to facilitate fast, reliable and accurate facial biometric solutions.

“Through this relationship, Sharp can provide highly secure solutions for a variety of Smart Card applications,” said Robert Stuart, Product Manager at Sharp Microelectronics. “Our Smart Card platform allows developers to integrate a substantial amount of information including a variety of retinal, fingerprint and facial solutions, providing customers with a true ‘one card’ advantage.”

The OmniPerception face recognition technology is a patent pending technology that incorporates facial biometrics with digital images and which runs at the fastest two seconds or under on only the smallest platforms utilizing 6Kb of code. Unique to this technology are the FacialPIN and verification algorithms that together enable higher accuracy in which the data is secure and never leaves the card.

“Through the utilization of the OmniPerception face recognition technology, Sharp’s Smart Card technology offers increased security confidence allowing smart cards to ‘see’ and recognize faces automatically,” said David McIntosh, Chief Executive Officer at OmniPerception. “Smart Card technology is moving toward more robust solutions affording many markets the ability to customize solutions to fit their individual needs.” He added “OmniPerception is delighted to be collaborating with Sharp Microelectronics in such globally critical applications.”

Sharp’s 16-bit and 32-bit Smart Card technology with embedded 1MB Flash memory is being developed with Sharp’s 0.18 µm process and five metal-layer connection process to meet the rapidly growing demand for a solution that has the ability to store a great variety of data within an extremely secure environment. Sharp’s Smart Card technology is capable of storing greater amounts of information, including vector data and biometric identification as well as required recognition algorithms.

Applications for these new Smart Cards include high security uses such as physical access control cards, logical access control cards, national identity cards, driver licenses, entitlement cards and bank cards.

Sharp and OmniPerception representatives will be available to discuss these Smart Card technologies at the 14th Annual CardTech/SecurTech Conference and Exhibition, April 27-29 in Washington D.C., in the Sharp booth number 849.
