Take my car - please!

What does it cost to boost that retail sales report? It is simple: a $286,000 quarterly loss for General Motors. When you sell cars at no profit and give cash back incentives to move cars, you can`t keep people off your car lots.

What will they do to move cars during the next model year: buy one and get one free - with no interest on your purchase, no payments until 2010 and the entire cash price of the vehicle rebated over the next five years? Hell, maybe some of that elbow jostling I learned on the trading floor years ago will come in handy when I have to push through the crowd to kick the tires of a brand new Silverado.

Soon GM will come to grips with the fact that it is a money lender and not an auto manufacturer. Fords is next. I even received a note from my Volvo dealer offering exactly the same deal.

However, financial TV keeps those talking heads screaming about the robust retail sales, indicating an even more robust non-inflationary economy.

A few comments on what is being discussed about GM

1. Is GM`s awful earnings the straw on the camel`s back?
2. If GM is as some feel a dead company then what is the US dollar?
3. If GM is dead company then what is the impact on GM suppliers?
4. If GM is a dead company what is the impact on GM dealers?
5. If GM is a dead company then what is the impact on foreign cars and therefore the US Trade Deficit?
6. Since GM is under water by more than a billion in net earnings this year alone, what is the future of its employees?
7. If GM goes under, what will happen to Ford and Chrysler?
