We`re trying to bring more leverage and closer scrutiny to further accelerate the path to profitability for the operating units," said Wetherell, who is also CMGI`s chairman, during the conference call. He did not specify a date for when the company hopes to reach profitability. Safa Rashtchy, an analyst with U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray, said Thursday`s announcement was encouraging because it appears the streamlined structure will make it easier for investors and analysts to evaluate CMGI`s financial results. He also said that the reorganization emphasizes that CMGI is focusing on its existing operating units rather than further expanding its investment network. Ultimately, though, it will be financial performance, not corporate structure, that matters, Rashtchy said. "This is a first step," Rashtchy said. "Most investors will be waiting to see what numbers come out of each business segment and how good those numbers are." CMGI`s net loss ballooned to $428 million in the fiscal 2000 third quarter from $27.7 million in the year-ago period. Revenue also rose to $225.9 million from $43.6 million in the 1999 third quarter. The company is expected to report fourth-quarter results on Sept. 21. |
