A Q&A WITH STEVE LIPSCOMB
FOUNDER OF WPT ENTERPRISES

Q. Why is Poker so hot ?

Before the WORLD POKER TOUR® hit the airwaves in 2003 there was no real interest
in televised poker. Poker had been broadcast for years, but the way it was produced,
neither you nor I would want to watch it. The WORLD POKER TOUR literally reinvented
the game as a televised spectator sport. Instead of three cameras incomprehensibly
covering guys holding cards around an oval table, for the first time the WPT made the
game “play live” – with seventeen cameras covering all the action, WPT cams that
revealed the hole cards, explanatory graphics and commentary that finally made the
game understandable in real time.

Q. What is it that has captured the public’s fancy?
We have managed to create and invent a viewing experience that makes you feel like
you are sitting in that seat making million dollar decisions on every hand. You look at
the cards when the players do. You track what all the other players have. You get that
sinking feeling that you are about to make the biggest decision of your life – and you
may be wrong. This is high stakes human drama. There is just no better reality
television on the air today.
You watch a close-up on a guy whose brain is overheating. His lip begins to quiver.
Sweat runs down his brow -- because he is about to make or break a million dollars on
the next card. People sit at the edge of their seats watching the WORLD POKER TOUR
because this is the human condition at its extreme. A college professor of mine calls
poker the Modern Greek Tragedy. I rather like that.
I’ve seen people in bars watching our tournaments, yelling, “Oh no, don’t do it!” It’s like
watching someone go over a cliff and you can’t stop them.
