Marks & Spencer to Sell All Products Over Internet, Digital TV

London, Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Marks & Spencer Plc, the U.K.`s largest clothing retailer, said it`s preparing to sell all its products over the Internet, digital TV and other channels next year and will soon pick a company to manage its online equipment and connections.

Marks & Spencer is competing with Internet companies and retailers such as Tesco Plc, the U.K.`s largest supermarket chain, for online sales in the U.K., which are forecast to increase to almost $9 billion by 2002, or 3.1 percent of all retail sales, from $1.7 billion in 1979, according to Schroder Salomon Smith Barney.

``We have profound ambitions to be a multichannel retailer,`` said Cathy Ryan, head of systems in Marks & Spencer`s marketing department. ``Next year, we want to be able to offer our whole catalog`` through the Web, digital TV and other devices, such as mobile phones, she said.

The London-based retailer currently uses its Web site to sell about 2,000 products. Its catalog has a total of about 200,000 items, including different colors and models as well as products.


``We want to ensure that what we offer is totally consistent across every channel we use and that we have a single view of our customers,`` Ryan said.

Marks & Spencer wants another company to manage the technical side of these services -- to house and run the large computers that process them, to ensure online connections are fast and reliable and to make sure Web sites and other services are operating.

Telecommunications companies, data-center networks, computer makers and others are vying to offer the contract, which is likely to be worth more than 1 million pounds ($1.4 million) over three years, Ryan said.

The company expects to make a decision within a few weeks, she said.
