Smart MasterCards Are On The Way
MasterCard International issuers in the United States will be making smart card announcements "very soon," Gail A. Francolini, vice president of chip products, tells Card Technology. "The tide is definitely turning in the U.S.," Francolini says. "There`s lots of great stuff going on." She declines to name the issuers. Like the chip-based Visa credit cards unveiled last week by Visa U.S.A. and three of its issuers, the MasterCard announcements will feature smart cards that allow consumers to do business safely on the Internet. "Digital ID is a very hot area," Francolini says. She says MasterCard members will announce smart card plans this year, with rollouts scheduled for 2001. (9/18)
