Tuesday , Sep 19, 2000 Sun-Thu at 18:00 (GMT+3) Headlines National Semiconductor Israel Launches Chips for Information Appliances Market By Yanay Alfassy National Semiconductor unveiled today three chips for three key market segments in the information appliance market: Internet Personal Access Devices "WebPAD"; digital converters "Set-Top-Box"; and network terminals "Thin Client". A senior executive stated that the chips will cost $50 each in 10,000 unit packages. According to research by IDC, the market for information appliances is expected to amount to $17.8 billion in 2004. IDC expects that in 2002, equipment orders for information appliances in the US will exceed orders for PCs. National Semiconductor markets chips to various computer and communications sectors. Its customers include Philips, AOL, IBM, Sony and Compaq. Its main offices are in Santa Clara, California and its research center is in Herzliya. The company`s "Geode" microprocessor was developed in Israel and is a key component in the WebPAD and digital converters products. Company turnover was $2.2 billion in 1999.
