und hier etwas, was MBX wahrscheinlich nur peripher tangiert - vielleicht aber ELSA: Orckit Won`t Meet Bezeq Commitment for ADSL Modems By Efi Landau ADSL modem manufacturer Orckit informed Bezeq that will be not be able to meet its commitment to supply modems in 2001, as set in the tender it jointly won with French company Alcatel. Bezeq is now considering two options: transferring the contract to Alcatel, or else using ECI Telecom as an additional supplier . To date, Orckit has supplied 3,000 modems and Alcatel has supplied 5,000 modems to Bezeq, for a total of 8,000. Orckit committed to supplying 10,000 modems this year, while Alcatel recently submitted a business plan to supply 20,000 modems by the end of the year. If Bezeq does get a license to provide high-speed Internet service using ADSL technology in the next few days, and demand exceed projections, it seems reasonable that the company will not be able to meet the demand. "Globes" has also learned that Alcatel and Israeli company Bynet, which is installing the equipment on its behalf, informed Bezeq that if it decides to transfer all of its modem requirements to them, and not contract to another supplier instead of Orckit, Alcatel will increase its supply of modems. Alcatel currently has orders for 2 million modems throughout the world, and it is juggling customers. A senior Orckit executive told "Globes" that the supply of chips in September has been regular and that there are no further delays in sales. He said that Orckit expects delivery problems to Bezeq only. Bezeq deputy general manager for marketing Pnina Shinhav said in response that the company would make every effort to successfully meet the expected demand. Orckit said in reply, "The company initiated the approach to Bezeq`s management, informing it that it will supply 10,000 lines by the end of the year, as per our commitment."
