Chief scientist: No future for hi-tech without regulation reform plan
By Gwen Ackerman

Hi-tech may be in for a dismal future if the government does not promote education, ease corporate tax laws, and create a stronger local market, Industry and Trade Ministry Chief Scientist Carmel Varnia said yesterday. (...)

"Let`s talk about high-speed Internet. We have one of the best cable infrastructures in the world. Bezeq`s network is also one of the best in the world and only because of regulatory issues is it not being utilized. It`s not even that the government isn`t encouraging its use, it`s delaying it."

Introduction of high-speed Internet has been held up for months, as the issue of expanding the cable companies` existing concessions to include Internet service gets kicked from the Communications Ministry to the Justice Ministry to the Finance Ministry and back again.

(...)

"We are losing out to other countries," Varnia concluded. "We can do things a lot better."
