Please find attached copy of an article on UltraCard, a subsidiary of Upgrade
International Corp., that appeared on 25.9.00 in Telecommunications Reports
International (www.tr.com). UltraCard have started a series of interviews
with specialist magazines that will appear in the next few weeks. In
addition, Card Forum International is going to print an article on the
UltraCard technology in early November.

5 Megabyte UltraCard Scheduled For Early 2001 Launch
Touting its technology as “beyond smart,” UltraCard Inc. plans to unveil its
5 megabyte (MB) UltraCard chip card early next year. The UltraCard card will
have greater storage capacity than the standard smart card and is
interoperable with other systems.

“The UltraCard card is adaptable to any number of applications, and unlike
some entry products currently being introduced, it carries the programs
required to achieve total interoperability with all cards and readers,” said
Dan Kehoe, president of UltraCard, a subsidiary of Upgrade International
Corp. “Each of these applications can serve as a springboard for a number of
other applications.”

UltraCard officials recently demonstrated the product at the National
Democratic Convention in Los Angeles, Calif. UltraCard’s Chief Technology
Officer Don Mann said the proposed future use of multiapplication smart cards
will require several megabytes of data storage, although the storage size of
the existing smart card electrically erasable, programmable read-only memory
(EEPROM) is limited to 32 kilobytes (K) to 64K. Increasing storage capacity
greater than 64K will be “extremely expensive and difficult to obtain,” he
added.

Kehoe said the UltraCard addresses this concern. “UltraCard’s 5MB entry
product combines hard disk technology, the standard magnetic stripe card and
the smart card chip with UltraCard’s patented technology to produce a
revolutionary system for high security, high capacity portable data storage
in a credit card format.”

The technology uses the durability of magnetic hard disk technology plus
high-volume, high-throughput sputter technology. The UltraCard reader/writer,
the Ultradrive, will be backwards-compatible to Visa International’s smart
card reader. Cardholders insert the card into the reader/writer, which reads
>from and writes to the card only after verification by any number of
biometric or personal identification number (PIN) authorization codes.

Kehoe praised the recent launch of the smart Visa platform (see story, p. 1)
and its potential for encouraging smart card use in the United States. “We
are pleased to hear that Visa is launching its smart Visa because smart card
technology has been slow to take hold in the United States, and this launch
of smart cards paves the way for domestic success,” he said. “Our technology
is an incremental progression of existing smart card products, and we intend
to be ready to help with the next step.”

UltraCard’s interoperability and security features make it adaptable to
diverse applications in markets such as finance, government, the Internet,
health care, transportation, identification systems and other applications.
